We’re excited to share that ExpressJet pilots will begin voting on contract extensions in the coming weeks that will enhance our already strong work rules to provide an unmatched total compensation package. The tentative agreement (TA) includes the following highlights:
• First year pay of $37-40/hr, pending equipment type
• Pay increases at all levels to benefit entire pilot group
• Increased per diem rate to $1.85/hr, with additional increase to $1.90/hr after 18 months
• Enhanced profit sharing program for all pilots• Additional Quality of life work rules for all pilotsOur pilots will vote on LOA 15 and LOA 12, which are

Piedmont Airlines is launching an industry-leading Cadet Program for promising pilots. The Cadet Program, which includes tuition reimbursement, will allow Piedmont to mentor and guide its next generation of pilots over an extended time period.“As we grow our fleet of Embraer regional jets, Piedmont’s immediate need is experienced pilots who can upgrade quickly to the left seat,” said Piedmont’s president, Lyle Hogg. “But we also recognize that long term success means investing now in talented young pilots. We will count on them to fill the gap when our more senior aviators move on to American Airlines. It’s an excellent opportunity for seamless advancement from student, to pilot instructor and on to Piedmont where they’ll have the opportunity to move up to American through our seniority-based flow through agreement.” Piedmont will partner with select colleges and flight schools to provide tuition reimbursement and other benefits to qualified
pilots. Once a pilot achieves Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) status he or she will be eligible for the Cadet Program including placement at a Piedmont partner school as an instructor and tuition reimbursement up to $5,000. After reaching the necessary number of flight hours, the pilot will be placed into an FAA-required Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP) course and provided with transportation and accommodations, at no cost. Once the course is completed successfully, the pilot will begin Piedmont first officer training at the American Airlines Training Center in Charlotte. At the start of training, each cadet pilot will receive an additional $6,000 in tuition reimbursement for a total value of more than $16,000. United Airlines announced January 22nd that the company’s pilots have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a two-year contract extension. The agreement provides significant improvements for United pilots and an extended period of stability for the company and the pilots.“This extension provides further momentum for United as we work together with the shared purpose of making United the best airline for our employees and customers,” said Oscar Munoz, president and CEO of United. “I want to recognize the efforts of both ALPA’s and United’s negotiating teams. Their hard work enabled us to achieve this ratified contract extension more than a year ahead of the amendable date.”The agreement runs through January 2019 and covers United’s more than 12,000 pilots.United has joint collective bargaining agreements covering the majority of its represented employees and recently opened contract negotiations early for the airline’s ramp service and passenger service agents, storekeepers, load planners, maintenance and fleet technical instructors, and other groups represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The airline is also engaged in mediated
negotiations with the Association of Flight Attendants and recently announced an agreement with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to put a proposed joint collective bargaining agreement out for ratification by the company’s technicians and related employees.

Combined with Envoy’s seniority-based flow through to American Airlines, the Cadet Program provides unmatched advancement opportunities.“By starting in the Envoy Cadet Program, students can put themselves on a direct path to a long-term career as a commercial airline pilot with American Airlines, the largest airline in the world, offering pilots the highest pay and youngest fleet among the U.S. mainline carriers,” said Captain Ric Wilson, Envoy’s Vice President Flight Operations. “The Envoy Cadet Program allows us to ease the financial burden faced by aspiring pilots wanting to pursue this career, while simultaneously giving Envoy access to some of the nation’s top aviation talent.”The Program offers various levels of support as the Cadet’s certifications, training and experience evolves, including up to $16,000 in tuition reimbursement. Mentorships and internships with airline industry experts can begin as early as a Cadet’s freshman year. As a Cadet achieves more certifications, they become eligible for tuition reimbursement, placement at partner schools to serve as instructors so they can build their flight time, and, at select partner schools, employee travel privileges.Cadets will be placed into the FAA-required Airline Transport Pilot Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP) course, at no cost to them, after reaching the necessary number of flight hours. New Training Center Coming in 2016
In October 2015, the Company broke ground on a newTraining Center near Indianapolis International Airport, a40,000-square-foot learningcomplex thatwillhouseanE-Jetcabinsimulator,andclassroomfacilitiesthatcanaccommodatemore than 400 people daily. The facility also will feature a100-seat auditorium. At twice the size of its current facility,the Training Center will employ about 60 Associates and isexpectedtobecompletedinQ22016.
“This new facility confirms our commitment to trainingexcellenceasanindustryleader,”Kinstedtsaid.“Thisversatilecomplexensuresourflightcrewsandfrontlineemployeeswillcontinue to receive the best instruction available.Nothing ismoreimportantthanthesafetyofourpassengersandcrews.Our new Training Center will help us continue delivering onthatcommitment.”

Inmostindustries,itisunderstoodbyprospectiveemployees thatpayrateswillbebasedoneitheradefined salary or an hourly wage, but usually notboth. This makes a comparison or calculation ofcompensation relatively straightforward because inmost cases the salaried employee will receive thesame compensation regardless of hours worked,while the hourly employee’s compensationwill beonaslidingscalebasedonhoursworked.
Theairlineindustrytypicallyusesacombinationofthetwomethodsthatisn’talwaysasstraightforwardto predict or understand.
The typical form of compensation in the airlineindustryisabasemonthlysalary(regardlessofhoursworked)withadditionalpaycalculatedataprescribedhourly rate above theminimum number of hours.ThisconceptiscalledMinimumMonthlyGuaranteeonthebasisthatthepilotwillbecompensatedwithat least the guaranteed salary portion of their payregardlesshowfewhourstheywork.
Itwilldependontheparticularairline’scontract,butinmostcases,thenormalnumberofguaranteehoursisbasedon75hourspermonth.Theguaranteeisthenasimplemultiplicationoftheguaranteehours(75inourexample)timesthehourlycompensation(say$30anhour). This is importanttounderstandforacoupleofreasons. First, itwilldeterminetheleastamountapilotwillbecompensatedunderallconditions.Second,itisimportanttonotethatwhilethehourlywageseemshigh,itisactuallyonlypaidatabouthalfasmanyhourspermonthasa“normal”40hourjob,soitdoesn’treallyprovidethenormalvalueof$30anhour,whichisimportanttoconsiderwhen making the transition from other fields orcareers.
If thepilotworksenoughcredithourstoexceedtheminimumguarantee(75.1hoursormoreinourexample), they will be paid based on the numberofhours theyactuallyworked,at theirhourly rate.However,ifthepilotonlyworks5hoursthatmonth,sitting on reserve for instance, they will still becompensatedthefull75hoursforthemonth.
When comparing contracts or pay rates, it isimportant to consider both the number of hoursguaranteed per month as well as the hourly rate.In some cases, airlines will offer higher hourlycompensation,butlowerguaranteeorviceversa.
Beyond the minimum guarantee hours airlinecompensationhasalotmoreconsiderdependingontheformofcompensation,sootherworkrulesstarttoplay a larger role (deadheadpaypercentage forinstance), but theMinimum Guarantee provides agoodstartingpointforcompensationamountbasedontherealitythatitwillbetheleastamountpaidaslongasthepilotisanactivepilotforthecompany.
