Avi Flu

• Avi Flu is a virus.

• Write as much as you can in 30 seconds about viruses.

• Use the picture to help you.

Scientific Models

• We are going to use a scientific model during this lesson to see how Avi flu spreads.

• Why do you think models have to be used for predicting how a disease will affect the population?

Lesson Objectives

• To understand how models are useful in predicting the effect of disease on the population.

• To be part of a classroom model to show the effects of avian flu in a human population.

• To be able to explain the dangers of avian flu in terms of the type of disease, the historical evidence and the potential threat of an epidemic.

At present 2 pupils in the class have been infected with Avi Flu.

After each activity they will infect 2 people sitting next to them.

You will not know who is infected! You will only know if you get infected

Avian Flu

• Get into a group of 3

• You will have to swap round later so don’t worry about who’s in your group (2 people do have the virus though!)

• Choose in your 3 which expert you would like to be:

Disease Specialist Historian World Health Organisation

Avian Flu• You will watch a video on Avian Flu and must become an

expert on your topic, some questions you might want to answer are below:

Disease Specialist Historian

World Health Organisation

1) What symptoms does the disease give you?

2) How does the disease spread?

3) Why might you new epidemic be worse than before?

4) Where does the disease come from?

1) What year was the Spanish flu epidemic?

2) Where did the epidemic originate?

3) How did the disease get to other countries?

4) Who produced a vaccine and when?

1) What could happen to Australia if avian flu arrives?

2) Where has the avian flu reached so far?

3) What do countries need to do to protect themselves?

4) How many have started this?

Avian Flu

The infected individuals need to tell the 2 people next to them that they are infected before they move onto the next activity.

DON’T LET ANYONE SEE YOU!

If you are now infected you must let yourself be known to the teacher during the next activity without drawing attention to yourself.

• Click on the link and watch the video for 9 minutes and 25 seconds.

• Concentrate on the question you have in front of you and write down notes during the video.

Avi Flu Poster

• You must produce a poster about Avi flu and its dangers in groups of 3.

• You must be in a different group than before and have one of each expert.

• The information to all questions must be on your poster.

Dead or Alive

• Everyone that is infected needs to come to the front of the classroom and collect a card from the teacher.

• This card will tell you whether you DIED or SURVIVED your avian flu.

Dead or Alive

• How many of the class died from avian flu?

• Try and think of 3 reasons that models have to be used to carry out this type of investigation?
