Krzysztof Kieslowski weaves tales of each protagonist by making us question each theme, is it really equality or inequality? There is an element of the opposite forces working in each story. All three movies are visual art, dominated by their respective thematic colours. This effect really does drive the colour themes home.“White” stars Julie Delpy as Dominique and Zbigniew Zamachowski as Karol Karol. Much like the first movie in the series, the movie “White” is dominated by the colour. Much of it is either filmed over winter snow or the characters are dressed in white. This is the funniest movie of the series with plenty of comic situations and witty repartee. Within the comic framework we see a story of a couple unfold. As they say no love is equal, here we see how the balance of power in the relationship rests with Delpy’s character at first. Throughout the movie Zbigniew Zamachowski tries to prove his wife wrong. The main dynamic of their relationship is that she no longer loves him, throws

him out of their home and cancels all her credit cards. As a desperate move Karol Karol smuggles himself back to his hometown in Poland in a suitcase. The rest of the story is comic in its desperation for establishing the theme of equality, between Karol and his family, his environment and his wife. They seem to only thrive when they fight, and their contentious relationship sparks new interest in each other. There, we see the real theme being explored; one is always trying to either get an upper hand on the other, or trying to prove their equality to their partner. In life we see that nothing really has balance, and “White” explores this theme in a framework of a contentious relationship. The question of equality and inequality is raised and answered in the best way possible by Krzysztof Kieslowski in the end of the movie, which also alludes to the next film of the series “Red”. This movie has legs and stands alone as a great story, as well as a part of a trilogy.

Written and directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski, the three colours trilogy is a critically acclaimed series of movies. The three colours represent the three colours of the French flag: red, white and blue. Each colour translates to the national French mottos of liberty, equality and fraternity Esha Aurora

“12 Years a Slave” is an epic drama about a slave who is captured and sold to plantation owners in a Southern state in the US in the year 1853. It is based on an autobiography by Solomon Northup about his life in captivity and his ultimate escape. The movie stars Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Paul Giamatti. The film is already a frontrunner for the Oscars.

The height of intense political drama, a show this good hasn’t been produced since the Sopranos. Marred with backstabbing, blackmail and all kinds of underhanded dealings, “House of Cards” shows the ugly face of the elites at Capitol Hill. Starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, in their best roles to date.

If you ever wanted

to read a memoir, “Just Kids” by Patti Smith is the first book you should pick up. Patti Smith is a prolific writer; her language is fluid and the book has an authentic voice. The memoir mainly focuses on her relationship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe, along with their emergence into the 70s counter culture revolution. The book gives you a real feel of how it felt to be young, disenfranchised, and poor, living in New York city with a big dream of making it.

Easy Eid hairHair

With Eid around the corner, its time to put complicated hairdos in the back burner and adopt an easy, breezy concept for your crowning glory. 2014 will surely bring new hair trends along , so make the most of the look you sported this year. The ideal hair for the upcoming festivities is beautiful, healthy, and shiny hair without a hint of added stress or damage. Sabah Rahman

Q&A

• If you have dyed tresses, stop by the salon to refresh any fading colour. Spritz your hair with a protective spray before you go about your day to combat further fading and dullness between applications.

• If you wear your hair long and straight, indulge in a pre Eid conditioning treatment to ensure gorgeous shine.

• Undone, loose waves always look stunning, but is a hard to achieve for those with fine hair. Wash with a thickening shampoo, spray damp hair with styling mist and coil it into a loose bun. Allow to dry naturally, let hair down and finger comb for voluminous waves.

• If all else fails, braid it. Braids are still very much in and so cute, we hope this trend is here to stay.

Hot Tip DO NOT go to a random salon for a complete makeover on the eve of Eid. A whole new look may sound appealing, but if executed poorly, you will be left with an unpleasant disaster. What looks amazing on a model in a magazine may not end up doing you any good since your hair and skin type may not be suited to that particular colour or style

A. Sorry to break it to you, but spot reduction can’t be done. You are going to have to do this the old fashioned way and spend some major time doing cardio exercises that help shed weight all over your body. If you are holding some major weight in your mid-section, doing crunches may be pointless, as the muscle definition will be hidden under the bulge. The idea is to lose the weight first and then perform toning exercises to tighten up target areas. Don’t fall for fad diets, as you may end up binge eating and gain more than you started with. Adopt a healthy lifestyle and try to

eat as healthy as you can. You have a few months before the big day, so join a gym and start today to ensure you look as good as you will surely feel.

Q. I need to lose weight fast for my wedding this winter. How can I get rid of my huge belly and behind? Should I start doing a lot of crunches? Any tips on how to just lose weight on those bits?

Eid make-up 101Eid is one of the most celebrated days here in Bangladesh and brings family and friends together Navin Ahmed

Navin Ahmed has studied cosmetic techniques and management at Sheridan College in Canada. She has worked as a freelance make-up artist in Toronto and is the founder of GALA Wedding Planners and Makeover Studio in Dhaka

Here are some tips to help you look your best on Eid as you meet with loved ones. It’s important that your make-up is long lasting in this heat since you may not be able to squeeze in touch ups. Generally families get together and have a feast after Eid prayers so when you do your make-up in the morning, it should be about being pretty and natural. The day calls for light handed make-up application. If you get time to redo your make-up in the evening, you can then go for darker, shimmery shades, but for morning and noon, make-up should be light, crisp, fresh, and not cakey.

Prepping the skinThe night before Eid, you can prep your skin by making a paste from a teaspoon of baking soda with water and apply on your face avoiding the eyes. Rinse it off after 2-3 minutes. The result is instant radiant skin. In the morning, before applying your make-up, use an oil free sunblock that doubles as a moisturiser.

FoundationUse something that matches your skin tone perfectly because if your foundation is lighter than your skin, it is too obvious during the day and you end up with a greyish result. Choose a long-lasting and oil-free version of foundation so that it does not clog your pores from wearing it throughout the day. If you have no major imperfections, I would suggest you skip the foundation and go for the new tinted moisturisers that are available called CC or BB creams. They are light and leave your skin feeling smooth and silky and give an even toned finish. Don’t forget to dab on concealer under the eyes and dust a little bit of translucent powder to take away any unwanted shine.

EyesSmear on primer so that eye shadow lasts all day. Keep your eye make-up fresh and simple. Use light shades like pale gold, rose pink, mauve, or earthy tones. The colour you pick does not have

to match your clothes. Use a waterproof eyeliner and kajal to avoid smearing. Finish off with waterproof mascara. You can darken your eye liner and make it a bit thicker in the evening to lend it a more glamourous finish.

CheeksSwipe on light pink or peach hues that blend naturally with your complexion. Top it off with a little bit of highlighter on the cheekbones so that your skin looks fresh and dewy.

LipsLipstick should also be long-lasting. You can use a light pink or peach shade during the day. Amp up your evening face with a touch of bright red lips.

Layering is vital, but there’s a certain way to lay it on thick. There’s a proper way to keep things fashionable. In order for that to happen, there are a few rules to follow.

l Thinner clothes come first. The closer to your skin, the thinner the fabric. After your undershirt, the rest should follow. Start with simple thin cotton t-shirts, dress shirts or turtlenecks and top it off with a thick sweater (preferably in wool), blazer or leather jacket.

l Kick back a little. Layering looks best in those casual occasions. Formal is formal, you can only layer so much. There are plenty of combos to work with for a casual gathering. Although, there are plenty of ways to add more to the sophistication. Items like a tailored blazer or a quality dress shirt slaps that extra classy feel to your outfit.

l Comfort is always a priority. You’ll read it here constantly. You should never wear anything that you don’t feel comfortable in. Unless, you’ve lost a bet. In that case, bad on you. You see what gambling does? Jokes aside, staying warm is a must but also make sure you’re still able to scratch the back of your head. There has to be manoeuvrability. How are you supposed to look suave if you’re moving around like a toddler?

l Don’t be afraid of a little colour. Just because it’s autumn/winter doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the fun. Sure, black, brown, navy, grey are all autumn/winter colours but you should never restrict yourself to them. It’s always a great effect when there’s a louder colour in between the darkness. It’s almost as if there’s something hidden, eager to pop out. Great contrast goes a long way for this season’s wardrobe.

Lay it on, baby

Style doesn’t rest

Q: This may sound silly but what is the appropriate way to tuck an undershirt? Do you tuck in both the undershirt and the outer in your boxers or your trousers?

A: Boxers or briefs, they’re made to keep the family jewels in place and comfortable. They don’t need extra baggage forcing its way in. The undershirt shouldn’t be too much of a problem as long as your shirt tails are long enough. Both the tails of an undershirt and dress shirt should be long enough for you to bend forward without it spilling out. Even if your undershirt is disregarded, your shirt is the obvious superstar in the tucked department. As long as you’ve got the shirt tail, the fit trousers, the belt tightened, there shouldn’t be a problem. if you ever find yourself showing off a cricket swing to your friends, you can always tuck your shirt back into place.Q: I have noticed less and less of

pleated pants in menswear. Most new suits all have flat-fronts, are pleated pants out of style?

A: You have to be careful here not to confuse fashion and style. Pleated pants maybe out of fashion but never out of style. Yes, over the years it has become less popular. A lot of the new crop of suits and trousers are flat-fronts because they are actually more flattering. They tend to highlight a more tailored look. This doesn’t mean you won’t look good in pleated pants anymore. There’s a different occasion for each style. Since pleated pants provide a more relaxed and roomy feel, this could be a good choice for those casual moments. They also leave an undesirable balloon effect the moment you sit down, so most men nowadays will opt for the flat-fronts.

You might be tempted to go all white. Let’s not be boring. You may have the urge to go all out and bedazzle yourself. It’s not your wedding. In fact, that should always be avoided. This Eid it’s about finding the right balance. Dealing with the crazy weather, you’ll have to be careful in what you choose. However, there is an overall acceptance to an attractive look for Eid

Keep things colourful and light. We’re technically out of summer’s reach but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the fun you had in a past season. Nothing too complicated here, gentlemen. To keep things comfortable, you can always opt for a fresh pair of jeans with your kurta or panjabi. Whether the designs are simple or a bit on the lively side, it’s always best to have the colours pop. As long as the colour tones complement each

other, you’ll be good to go. This means, wearing the same colour both on the top and bottom are going to be an eyesore. Unless you aim to wear all black, it’s recommended you separate the top and bottom. As for the feet, sandals never hurt, but keep in mind there are plenty of quality loafers out there that are suitable replacements. You’ll be doing plenty of walking and you don’t want to come back home with, well, the undesirable stench.

When it comes to the colder months, practicality comes first

The Master Cleanse is more a fast than a diet. Consisting of an insipid, frustratingly tasteless drink made with lemon juice, organic maple syrup (grade B) and cayenne pepper, this fast promises you the world, given that you follow it religiously. As maple syrup is hard to find in Bangladesh, I used the next best alternative: honey. In 1.5 litres of water, add two tablespoons of lemon, one teaspoon of honey and a pinch of cayenne pepper. I drank two bottles of this every

day for a week, making several nearly fatal mistakes, like having breakfast consisting of a bowl of daal and one brown roti on the first day, alongside several other tidbits from here and there. I combined this with a daily 40 minutes of aerobic workout and 20 minutes of power yoga. Despite the mistakes I made, I had lost a shocking 3.5kg by the time I weighed myself on day six morning!

The beauty of the sock bun curl lies in its ability to give you two stunning, yet radically different looks. This Eid, you can opt for a sophisticated, high doughnut bun during the day, and then let your hair down during the night for lustrous, cascading curls. ponytail upwards and pull it through the centre of your doughnut. Hold onto your hair as you do this. Leave the sock 1.5 inches away from the edge of your ponytail.

5) Position the sock near the edge, and with your other hand, find your ponytail’s “tail,” and tuck it around the sock in an outward motion. Keep tucking your “tails” until they disappear into the sock’s folds.

6) Once you have all the stray edges tucked inside your doughnut, using your index finger and thumb, roll the bun outward. Place your thumb below the sock and your index in the centre of the bun; this will help you roll the rest of your hair around the doughnut.

7) Keep rolling until you have the entire length of your ponytail rolled around the sock. Keep adjusting the bun to make sure all ends are wrapped in your doughnut; however, do not fret over neatness until you have come to the very end of your ponytail.

8) Once the bun has been created where the ponytail was, gently begin to shape it using your fingers to tuck and mould. Use bobby pins to secure any stubborn hair.

9) To get the perfect curls, you may do this before going to bed and then unroll your bun in the morning to reveal natural looking, lustrous curls.

Tip: If you have long hair, bend over and then begin rolling around the sock

Out and aboutPhysical activity is essential for children’s healthy development. It benefits both the mind and body. Various studies show that outdoor activities reduce the chance of developing heart disease, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Aside from preventing disease, outdoor activities help children grow and understand how to interact with their environment Esha Aurora

Even though we are quite aware of these benefits, our lives today are run on endless traffic jams and technology. Children barely seem to find time outside of studies and when they do, there is hardly a place for them to go play in! With a little effort though you could find fun outdoor activities for your children!

u Basketball: This is a fun and exciting way for children to get the appropriate exercise. Basketball helps children understand the dynamics of working within a team, a skill that is very important even as an adult. They learn how to depend on someone else and they learn that if they fail, the team fails. This a fantastic sport for growing kids.

u Karate: Enroll your children in a karate school, there are plenty of places in Dhaka city in almost every area. Karate helps the mind focus, children learn a new skill along with exercising their mind and body. Here they will meet new children of their own age, and learn to socialise outside of school.

u Frisbee: You can play with your child almost anywhere! Starting from the roof to a nearby park, Frisbees offer the freedom of being ultra-portable and fun! A staple for the past twenty years, playing with Frisbees will usually give you and your child a good workout and it’s a great way to bond with them! It’s also perfect to take with you on a weekend picnic, park, vacations etc. Also consider the fact that you and your child can make up many different kinds of games to play with each other with a frisbee. Let your imagination run wild and invent new and fun things to play every day Plus there are some serious competitions for Frisbee players, if your child shows some talent for it, enter them. Doing things like these will give them confidence in their own ability.

u Bicycles: riding bikes is a rite of passage. Today it is a great mode of transportation in Dhaka’s congested streets. Your children will get some exercise and be able to transport themselves from home to school or to their private tutors.

13TLC

u Swimming: an excellent way to spend time with your children on weekends. Pack them up and go to a swimming pool. It’s a great activity for family time and your children get to stretch their legs and get some exercise while splashing about in the water.

u Skateboards: a great way for your children to learn to balance themselves and spend hours trying to perfect it. Skateboards give the legs a good workout and help your children focus on completing an activity. Basically this is a good way for your children to get some exercise physically and mentally.

u Running: a great cardio workout, children with endless energy find running to be invigorating! This is fantastic for the heart and for burning calories. You can in cooperate things like a reward system like their favourite meal if they run for a certain amount of time.

Where to stayFor day-long trips, you can visit the Sundarbans and come back to Khulna for an overnight stay. However, for the ultimate experience of the Sundarbans, staying overnight is a must hence you have to stay on the launch.

What to do

There are various places to visit in the Sundarbans to explore and experience the wilderness. You can go spotting deer and tigers at Hiron Point and Katka, take a boat ride in the dense forest, go bird watching, visit the deer-breeding centre in Karamjal, and you can feast your eyes on the scenic beauty of Dublar Char and much more.

What to eatThe food on the launch is delightful and the sea food is amazing. Another attraction of the Sundarbans is its honey, which is highly priced due to its high quality.

Iffat Zerin Haque

The Sundarbans as the name suggests means beautiful forest in Bangla. The Sundarbans may have been derived because the Sundari trees are very prominent in the forest. The Sundarbans is considered to be the largest mangrove forest in the world. Although a small portion of the Sundarbans is in India, Bangladesh holds more than two-thirds of the forest and it is also home to the Royal Bengal Tigers

Granted that this city has an unparalleled charm to it all year-round, spring is the ideal time of the year to visit especially for those who want to dodge the tourist traffic and save a few euros

Ancient Monument Tours The colosseum serves as the world’s largest amphitheatre and single handedly beats all the other Roman tourist attractions. Explore the history that marred this glorious, crumbling monument, as you busy yourself taking pictures a mile a minute. Adjacent to this massive amphitheatre are the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, each an absolute must see after the colosseum.

Museums Nurturing innumerable galleries, sculpture, tapestries and frescos, Vatican Museum is absolutely phenomenal and the Sistine Chapel is the icing on the cake. Travellers are strongly recommended to wear good walking shoes which will prove to be reliable when you walk through the museum for hours on end. Compiled by Muneeba Fakhrul

Eight years ago, when Tabla maestro Bhai Gurmit Singhji Virdee passed away, he left a legacy of hundreds of students and a strong prophetic mission for Indian classical music. His son Sandeep Virdee gave up his corporate life and created the Darbar Arts Culture Heritage. Over the last eight years, Darbar festival for classical music has grown to be Europe’s

largest. This year’s edition held in the prestigious environs of the Southbank Centre saw an explosion of some of the finest talent from Indian classical genres present their virtuosity on the stage. Spread over four tightly packed days, the festival is not just the largest spread for Indian music lovers across but in its missionary zeal to propagate classical music, it stands as a nerve centre in bridging cultures. In addition to concerts of Hindustani, Carnatic and Dhrupad, on the platter were exclusive percussion solos, lecture-demonstrations, fringe shows, and academic discussions, all in one venue. No wonder the entire festival was sold out almost five months ahead with every performance witnessing packed halls spilling out of its seams. Playing a great leveler, all that mattered was the purity and essence of the art form, being delivered in the best possible way. For all those who think classical music is a dying art form with declining

audiences, Darbar stares in the face with a wide grin. Southbank centre is twenty-one acres of paradise right in the heart of London. The centre’s association with Indian performing arts goes back to over half a century when dancer Ram Gopal enthralled everyone at the Royal Festival Hall. For a week now, the venue was the nerve centre to a large jamboree of Indian art and artists. The BFI in its premises had an ongoing Satyajit Ray exhibit while the main hall was preparing for another by ace lens women Dayanita Singh. What was obvious was how the west was embracing Asian cultures and traditions, unbiased. Over the years, the festival has also played a significant role as a great cultural catalyst for Indian classical music. Tying up with BBC Radio 3 and SkyArts, the performances from the festival reach out to millions of homes across Europe, a feat no other festival or event has achieved anywhere. All the Darbar videos are broadcast around the Diwali season, like a gift to their viewers. In the history of European television programming, there hasn’t been such a large contingent of Indian music on air before Darbar happened. Looking at the madness and frenzy Darbar creates across Europe, one must credit Sandeep Virdee and his efficient team of executives for their grand and risky expedition. Darbar has opened floodgates of Asian culture and before anyone can think of it, the roving London Eye might be drenched in South Asian colours.

The amount of high quality South Asian art that happens outside of its geography is awe-inspiring. Be it dance or theatre, music or cinema, some of the premium gets distilled and exported for consumption to the west. Indian classical music is no different Veejay Sai
