The Avegant Glyph is a new concept in video goggles.

While at the full scale Oshkosh Airventure show the wholeRCG crew was at the RC field watching some FPV racing.Chris from MultiGP showed up with some funky, Star Treklooking head gear. We all had to try the "Glyph" headseton. I was really impressed with the image quality and hadto have one for myself.

What Makes the Glyph Different?

There are no pixels. The image is reflected on to your eye.

Low-powered LED - The Glyph uses Avegant's retinal imaging technology to transmit vivid, life-likeimages directly to the eye. The image starts with a low powered LED.

Micro Mirror Array - After passing through their patented set of optics, the light is reflected off of amicroscopic mirror array. Two million mirrors are used to shape the light into an image fit for the eye.

each eye. For me this has made a huge difference. I now have a perfectly in focus view in both eyes.

The eyepieces rotate to allow you to set the focus for your eye.

Glasses Work - As mentioned above you can adjust the focus so you don't need to wear your glassesbut I had a friend over and he put the Glyphs on and left his glasses on. This had not occurred to me.He was really happy with how they worked with his glasses. So there is another plus.

Adjustable Nose Height and Pieces - The unit comes with multiple nose pieces. I found the headsetuncomfortable at first and then I tried some different nose pieces. I was really surprised at how big ofa difference the right one made. I found I could wear the headset with no discomfort.

The nose piece is held on with a magnet - easy on and easy off.

There is a wheel that raises and lowers the nose piece. This is to get the lens directly in front of youreye. I also like to get the goggles as close to my eyes as possible.

Controls

The ability to control the Avegant Glyph is pretty simple. On the right earpiece you can adjustbrightness, toggle off the menu screen, increase volume and mute the system. The mute is the biggestbutton (in the center) and handy when your video transmitter is only broadcasting annoying static.

The right side is where all the action is.

Ports - There are inputs for your HDMI and USB cables. You have to use the HDMI to input yoursignal. You can run off the internal battery or connect it to a USB port. That is where my externalpower pack would come in.

Audio Only - There is also an audio-in if you just wanted to use these for headphones. The unit comeswith everything you need to use them that way. The lenses will even pop into the unit out of the way.The provided cover keeps all the components safe and clean.

Here you see the eye pieces are pushed in and the cover is on.

For Gaming (3D Panorama) - Let's not forget what these are really made for, watching videos andgaming. My son plugged these into his Playstation 4 and the audio sounded great and the video wasspectacular! On the right side of the headset you can activate 3D and 360 content. We played a 3Dpinball game and it was insane!! Onboard head tracking allows the Glyph to work with 360 degreecontent. Pretty awesome!

The Glyphs can be warn as headphones or goggles. Ifound that with the right nose piece they werecomfortable. There is also a head strap if needed.

The buttons are located on the side. Volume and muteare easy to get to.

I can even wear a hat with the Glyphs on - a big plus! Since the image is projected on your eyes you don'tneed any eye cups. That means you can view your TXor monitor.

Compatibility

With the HDMI cable this unit can plug directly into these FPV rigs:

Since I don't have any of those FPV units I had to figure out how to get a standard signal into theGlyph headset. The solution was pretty simple and not expensive.

I like that everything is in one place. I also like having that power pack for any other devices that might need a USBport to charge or operate.

I found an RCA to HDMI adapter on Amazon. This $22 box allowed me to use the 720p output

option. I then plugged in the HDMI cable and that went out to the goggles. The only hitch in thegetalong there was that the adapter box used a USB cable to get 5v power. So while at Amazon I alsopurchased a high capacity rechargeable battery with multiple USB outlets for running the box. Theother benefit is that I can also power the Glyph headset from the pack if it runs out of battery in thefield.

This is what I use in the field. My monitor is dual diversity with a built in DVR. The battery pack (gold) runs the RCGto HD converter. It can alway power my goggles if the battery runs low.

I used velcro to attach all of this to the back of my Eachine diversity monitor/5.8 video receiver. I usethis unit all the time when I'm flying.

My Experience and Things I Liked

Things to Consider

First of all these are not cheap. The cost is high but I will say they certainly feel and work like a piecethat was well thought out and built to perform at a hight level.

They don't have a built in video receiver. For some that is a big deal. For me, not so much. I like havingan external video receiver and screen.

They have no built in DVR. Once again my video monitor takes care of that for me.

These Are My Main Goggles Because...

Sharper Image - My experience was brighter, more vibrant in color, and had a much crisper image. Iused these with low end video cameras and I was really surprised at how much better things lookedthrough the Glyphs. Everything I flew looked twice as good through the Glyphs. That's my personalopinion and your milage may vary. They blew away my panel displays.

The ability to rotate the eyepieces in the Glyph to adjust from +1 to -7 matched my prescription and

made everything perfect. I have never had that experience before.

Since I didn't need eyepieces to block out light I could look down at my transmitter or up in the sky. IfI needed to look at my external monitor all I had to do was glance down at it. I could then lock backinto my Glyph image by looking straight ahead.

I could not perceive any latency. Finger snapping, finger waving and all my tricks could not produceany latency through the goggles.

The Glyphs had all the brightness I needed, including in direct sunlight. Once I got the IPD just right Ididn't think about them again. They really put you in the craft you are flying.

I have to say these are the nicest goggles I have ever had my hands ons. I really love them.
