After catching wreck on dozens of 45-only (aka donuts)

Hip-Hop sets worldwide, Peanut Butter Wolf has gotten

together with the good folks at Five Day Weekend to put

together this insane collection of 10 Rap 45’s packaged in a

beautiful heavy-weight collector’s tin. The 20 classic Hip Hop

cuts, personally hand picked by PBW and taken from such

iconic labels as Enjoy, Sleeping Bag, Fresh, Cold Chillin’,

Strong City and many more are guaranteed to not only put a

smile on the face of any avid Old School Hip Hop fan, but also

provide a great introduction to the golden era for any Rap fans

of the new millennium.

“This project is such a great honor for me to be involved with.

This is one of the crowning moments of my music career,

seriously. As a kid growing up in San Jose, CA when all this

stuff was coming out, I was hooked and half a lifetime later I

still am. I can only imagine what these songs sound like to a

teenager today hearing them for the first time, just as they

probably wonder what it was like for someone like me to have

heard them for the first time back when it was all happening.

I've also always wondered what it was like to grow up in

one of the five boroughs in Hip Hop's infancy in the 80s.

These songs were the closest I got to knowing.”

Mr. Chop, the multi-talented producer, engineer, and

guitar-reared multi-instrumentalist behind a host of releases

on Now-Again and Jazzman Records, couldn’t have foretold

that the legendary rapper MF Doom would call him “the illest

to grace the boards” after tapping into his otherworldly skills

as co-producer/co-writer on a series of tracks on the recently

released Born Like This album on Lex Records. Nor could he

have foretold that Doom’s praise would lead to an offer to

rework psych funk, jazz and rock covers of producer Pete

Rock’s greatest beats.

Nor could he have called that Pete Rock’s long time collaborator,

CL Smooth, upon hearing the versions of “T.R.O.Y.” and

“Straighten It Out” would beg to record an album with him.

His is a unique take and has lead to an album that “the heads”

will recognize by, say, the Tom Scott sax-line Pete Rock

poached for “T.R.O.Y.,” or a host of other sample-based calls

and response that Chop has deconstructed into their

component parts and reassembled again. But his is an album

that will appeal to music lovers, regardless of their musical

leaning, as a master-class in fuzzy, funky grooves.

Before materializing as an official group, the Natural

Elements were originally conceived as a group of solo

artists brought together in 1993 under the tutelage of

producer Charlemagne. This initial grouping included

members Mr. Voodoo and L-Swift along with KA,

G-Blass, Howie Smalls and the InTimidator. By 1995

the unit had morphed into a straight up group

including the newly-added A-Butta.

When the Natural Elements line up solidified A-Butta,

L-Swift and Mr. Voodoo dropped sizzling singles like

“Live It Up” and “Bust Mine”. 12”s, Mixtapes,

appearance on the “Stretch and Bobbito Show” and

the like made waves and built a strong fan base. The

trio’s countless appearances on the NYC freestyle

and mixtape circuits culminated with a record deal on

the Tommy Boy Black sub-label and the release of

the single “2 Tons” in 1999. And that’s where the

story takes a wrong turn. ‘Issues’ between the group

and the label exploded and expanded with the end

“The Devil Smokes Dime Bags” was recorded by Oktober Zero in complete solitude to

avoid outside influence of the typical underground ‘16-bar boom-bap’ rap, and the

‘hustler-with-a-heart’ commercial vibe as well. The album has an aggressive attitude

combined with a sedated swagger, which explains the album title.

Oktober Zero is no stranger to the game having been a member of House Of Repz for

over a decade. But laying down these tracks in seclusion allowed him to rediscover and

refined his lyrical ability. He takes a loose, swaggarish approach on tracks like

“Chittybang” and “Fuc Musick”, but manifests his lyrical conceptuality on songs like

“Kicks!” and “Spoke to da O.G.” Oktober pushes the limit on the ominous piece called

“H8 In Ya Blood” where he spits in the flow, style, and voice of some of our much missed

deceased rappers. All this plus topics such as dice games (”C-Low Cash”), rough sex

with women (”Muchacha”), weed-smoking (”420 Church St.”), and being a

post-apocalyptic gangster (”Future Thug”), Oktober Zero and Kings Link Recordz invite

you to sit down and taste some of the best on “The Devil Smokes Dime Bags”.

Earthology is the long awaited follow up to The Whitefield Brothers

cult-classic In The Raw. While In The Raw’s hypnotic, defiantly psychedelic

funk music was grounded in the great musical traditions of both America

and Africa, Earthology finds the Brothers infusing their funk (or, as the

Brothers prefer it, “raw soul”) with musical traditions that span the globe.

To achieve the Earthology’s unique sound, the Brothers employed an array

of instruments and put in a dizzying amount of research: traveling the

world, joining different bands and ethnic performing ensembles, amassing

and absorbing field recordings, trawling used record bins for lost examples

of global psychedelic-fusion, over a period spanning some fifteen years.

Like In The Raw, Earthology is grounded by a “raw soul” band’s building

blocks: drums, guitar, bass, keys and horns, but it is augmented by such

exotic instruments as gongs and flutes from Asia, xylophones and string

instruments from Africa and Central American percussion instruments.

The use of African polyrhythms now seems commonplace on a funk or

psych album; Arabic rhythmical structures, African pentatonic scales and

Oriental modes do not. The Whitefield Brothers, and a multitude of guest

ranging from vocalists Edan, Mr. Lif, Bajka, Percee P and MED to

musicians from Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Quantic and the Dap-Kings, set

these elements in a modern context and, over the course of thirteen dense

tracks, blend them with the fierce funk their fans have grown to love.

Queensbridge heavyweight TaJuan Perry, better known as Big Noyd, has worked with 50

Cent, Cormega, Rakim and is off course a member of the tight-knit Mobb Deep family.

Noyd’s role in the Mobb Deep camp goes all the way back to his debut on “Stomp ‘Em

Out” from Mobb Deep’s 1993 debut Juvenile Hell, but it was on The Infamous album that

Big Rapper Noyd attracted wider attention. On the song “Give Up The Goods (Just Step)”

he started the second verse with the line “Yo, it’s the r-a-double-p-e-r n-o-y-d, n*gg*s

can’t f*ck with me!” He has later stated that he received his first contract (for $300,000)

because of that line. Noyd continued to make show stopping appearances on nearly every

following Mobb Deep album along with numerous tours, countless guest shots and string

of solo releases all his own. He has cemented himself as one of New York’s most

consistent MCs. Big Noyd kicks off 2010 with the all new Queens Chronicle. It’s a new

year, but this is the gritty and real Queensbridge sound that fans worldwide fiend for.

Reef The Lost Cauze is a Philadelphia mic-slayer on a mission. In 2004 Reef was quoted as

saying “This album is me at the top of my game.” Boastful? Perhaps. But five years (and two

more full lengths later) it’s clear Reef was speaking truth about Feast Or Famine.

Reef first made a name for himself with the 2003’s Invisible Empire and then with his

Philadelphia crew, the JuJu Mob, on their critically acclaimed Black Candles LP. In addition to

his reputation on the MC battle circuit he’s a member of the Hip Hop supergroup / collective

Army of the Pharaohs.

Feast Or Famine has some featured rappers and producers such as Sean Price who

appearances on “Fair One” (with production from DJ Mighty Mi) as well as fellow JuJu Mob

members Charon Don (on “I’m Rich”) and Chief Kamachi (on “Already Dead”). But the biggest

feature “Feast Or Famine” is Reef’s creative growth and his formidable lyrical abilities.

Cat. No: WPFC - TIF 102

Label: World Psychedelic Funk Classics

Available: January 19th, 2010

Following the success of the recently released Psych

Funk 101, Brasilian Guitar, Fuzz Bananas should serve

as a master class for those entranced by the funky,

heavy psychedelic wonders of the Tropicalia

movement and all that it spawned. But as compiler Joel

Stones writes in his liner notes: “You won’t find Os

Mutantes or their maestro Rogerio Duprat on this

compilation. There is a reason that the records

contained here have never been reissued. Even though

you will recognize some of the labels contained here…

believe me when I write this: some of the rarest, and

best, examples of fuzzy, funky Brazilian psychedelia

came out as promo-only 7” records on these labels.”

Each song contained on this album has never been

reissued, and has been restored from the best source

possible and remastered for near-perfect sound quality.

The 48 page full color booklet contains a wealth of

imagery and detailed annotation and liner notes in

both English and Portuguese.

10. Let Me Turn You On

Although he’s known primarily for the crossover hit “Just a Friend,”

to categorize Biz Markie’s career on the basis of that song would be

wholly unjust. Diabolical: The Biz’s Greatest Hits sets the record

straight. As a member of the stylistically diverse Juice Crew, the

formidable clique that included Big Daddy Kane, Roxanne Shante

and Kool G. Rap, Biz Markie’s clown prince character more than

held his own. Biz Markie’s manic energy and unbridled persona

paved the way for distinctive MCs like Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Busta

Rhymes. The Biz’s deft beatboxing skills, humorous storytelling,

and freestyle finesse are all clear on undisputed classics like

“Nobody Beats the Biz”, “Vapors”, and “Make the Music with Your

Mouth, Biz.” The package also includes never before seen photog-

raphy by George Dubose. This fun and funky career retrospective

succeeds in giving credit where it is due and truely proves to be the

“Ultimate Diabolical”. Don’t sleep, after all, the Biz never does...
