What Are Vinyl Graphics?Vinyl GraphicsHow it Works... - Your vinyl graphic is made of premium

cast vinyl. If properly applied it can be expected to have aseven year direct outdoor exposure lifetime. Silk screenedvinyls have 3-5 year outdoor life expectancy. Inspect yourgraphic, you will find that the actual vinyl is sandwichedbetween two pieces of paper. One piece is a heavier, waxcoated sheet. The other piece is a transfer paper that issticky on one side. If you carefully peel up a small portion ofthe transfer paper away from the backing paper, you will seethat the vinyl graphic is stuck to the transfer sheet, adhesiveside toward the backing sheet. Simple. The graphic willapply to your surface much like a bumper sticker... except thata little more care must be taken. Because the vinyl is only 2mils thick, it can easily wrinkle or get bubbles under it as it isapplied.

Decal Preparation - With the backing and transfer paper stilltogether, use a pencil and a straight edge ruler to draw a lineacross the baseline of the lettering, or through somereference point that will help you visualize how to square itup. (Fig. #1) NOTE: Use the graphic to set the referencelines. DO NOT assume that the paper is cut squarely withrespect to the graphic.

Surface Preparation - Make sure that the surface you areapplying your graphic to is clean, free of dust, dirt, oil andwax. Decal and Surface must be at least 50°F for bestadhesion. Determine the area where the decal will be applied.Draw a reference line with your pencil that will correspondwith the reference line(s) you drew on the transfer sheet of

the decal.

Dry MethodSmall to Medium Sized Graphics - Vinyl lettering up

to 12" in height, or graphics that can be easily worked with.Apply a length of masking tape across the top edge of thedecal sheet and tape the sheet in position on the surface,using your reference line to line it up.

Hinge up the decal on the masking tape and peel back a smallportion of the backing paper. Lay the decal down and slowlyrub down the transfer sheet and decal, working from oneedge or corner toward the opposite edge or corner. Use apiece of stiff cardboard, or a plastic wallpaper smoother as aburnishing tool. The idea here is to rub down the decal insuch a way as to work any bubbles out toward the "open"portion of the decal as you go. Once the backing paper iscompletely free of the transfer sheet, rub the entire decal andtransfer sheet down completely, working out all the bubbles.Then, slowly peel away the transfer sheet, and the graphic

will be in place.

Wet Method(Preferred method for all graphics

except spray mask)Large Graphics - Graphics with a large surface area (12"

x 12" or more). Prepare a wetting solution of 1/2 teaspoon ofliquid detergent (not hand soap) to 1-gallon of cold water. Adish soap such as Ivory Liquid™ works well. Using a spraybottle to apply wetting solution will make application easier.(1/2 tsp. to a standard size bottle.) Carefully remove the decaland transfer sheet from the backing sheet. Wet down theapplication surface and the adhesive side of the graphic andtransfer sheet. Position the decal and slide around to theproper location. Using a squeegee, plastic wallpapersmoother or piece of stiff cardboard, gently work out all thebubbles until the graphic and transfer sheet are downcompletely. Use a clean cloth to wipe off the excess watersolution, then squeegee down again. Complete adhesion willtake 30 mins. to 2 hours before the transfer sheet can beremoved. When dry , carefully remove the transfer sheet,starting from a corner. If the graphic lifts up with the transfersheet, squeegee it back down and let it dry longer. On largeletters and numbers, such as aircraft registration systems, itis easier to cut the letters apart AFTER the entire graphic hasbeen taped in place. Then you can lift up only one or twocharacters at a time and squeegee them in position, thenmove to the next ones.

Bubbles?Relax. Just use the point of a pin to poke a tiny hole in thebubble. Rub down the decal toward the hole and the bubblewill disappear.

Striping Kits, Roundels andother Large Graphics

Stripes

Straight stripes are fairly easy to deal with. Establish astraight line down the fuselage or wing about a quarterinch above or below the top or bottom edge of the stripe.A piece of string or a chalk line are two common methods.Make sure that no chalk dust is under the decal beforeyou install it however. Using this reference, the stripe canbe taped in place along the fuselage, checking to maintainthe same distance from the line to the edge of the stripe(s).Sometimes, if the stripe transverses a door gap, cowlingedge or other place where it will be cut, it is easier to cutthe stripe after it has been layed out and taped down. Cutthe stripe in the middle of the gap, or about 1/16" to 1/8"past the trailing edge of the cowling edge so that the ex-cess can be wrapped behind this edge later. Working withshorter sections is easier than working with a single 14foot piece.

Compound curves, especially over irregular surfaces canbe tricky. Spend some time developing a plan of attackand carefully laying out the stripe(s). Use symetrical pointsof reference to airframe features to check the stripes atgiven datum points, making sure that left and right sidesmatch along their paths. I also suggest that sometimes,it is easier to work with stripes that have had the excesspaper trimmed off as close to the edge of the actual stripesas practical.

Using a wetting solution in a spray bottle as previouslydescribed, don't be afraid to wet down the adhesive side ofthe stripes really well. It won't affect the adhesive and willgive you enough working time to align the stripes and workout all the bubbles. Some customers have reported thatworking over compund curves on the application surface,it was necessary to remove the stripe from its' taped-onposition and manually slide the decal around to achievebubble free alignment. The vinyl will allow for some stretch-ing and adjustment in these difficult areas. Once the trans-fer tape is removed, there is often still enough wetting so-lution left under the decal to allow for even more minoradjustment and bubble smoothing.

Multi-colored stripes are most often cut and suppliedseperately. This allows you the flexibility to adjust thedistance between colors or drop shadows to your taste.Stripes with a "drop shadow" for instance can be appliedwith the shadow actually touching the primary stripe coloror seperated as much as 1/2" apart. Drop shadows canalso be shifted to the left or right in many cases to changethe "light source" perspective angle. The trick to working

with multi-colored stripe designs is to lay them out to-gether while they are off the aircraft to establish their posi-tional relationship. Taping them up together on a largewindow or other translucent surface which can act as asort of "light table" can help you to easily see both coloroutlines together for more precise alignment. Once thisalignment is achieved, use a pencil to draw reference linesor marks across both colors which will aid you in re-estab-lishing these alignments on the plane. You will install onlyone color at a time, usually the primary color first. Trans-fer the alignment marks you drew on the transfer paper tothe surface of the plane before you remove the transferpaper from the first color application. This makes sureyou don't lose your reference when you remove the trans-fer paper. Overlapping two colors slightly can be donealso, however make sure to consider the order in whichthe colors must be applied to achieve the look you desire.Sometimes, you may have to put the secondary or dropshadow color on first.

Roundels and other LargeGraphicsAgain, the trick to applying graphics with a large surfacearea is to wet them down really well so that you can haveample time to squeegee them down well. I suggest that ifyou are applying the roundel to an irregular surface, likethe top of a wing, it is best to remove the backing paperfirst, then wet down the adhesive side of the roundel reallywell. You will then apply the roundel to the surface, liningit up with reference marks you put on the surface previ-ously. Start at one side and work your way to the otherside with the squeegee, working out the bubbles from eachirregularity as you go.

Dry Method -If the dry method of application is desired use the "CenterHinge" procedure. Tape the graphic in place on the sur-face. Run a strip of masking tape either horizontally orvertically across the entire length or width of the graphicextending past the edges a few inches. This strip of tapebecomes your "Center Hinge". Pull the graphic away fromthe surface and carefully pull away the backing sheet upto the tape which is your center hinge. Carefully cut thebacking sheet away from the graphic at the hinge. Usingyour squeegee, you will then carefully rub down the graphic,starting at the hinge and working outward, carefully rub-bing down with one hand and working toward the open partof the graphic as you hold the edge of the graphic awayfrom the surface with the other hand. The idea is to laydown the graphic by evenly un-rolling it as you squeegee itdown to the surface such that no air is allowed to becometrapped. Once the first half of the graphic is down, removethe hinge tape and reach under the graphic to find theremaining edge of the backing paper. Fold the backingsheet over itself and pull straight away from the area where

the graphic has been set in place. Use your squeegee towork from where you left off toward the open end of thegraphic in much the same way as you did the first half.

Large Registration Numbers12" Registration numbers applied either to the fuselage orthe underside of the wing can be worked with a letter at atime. To do this, tape the registration number in place,lining up the base-line alignment lines to the marks on theplane. Use masking tape along the bottom or top of thegraphic to hold in place. Once the registration has beenaligned and taped into position you can use a pair of scis-sors to cut between the characters. This way, you onlyhave to work with one character at a time to squeegee itdown before moving to the next character.

Rivet HeadsUse a stiff bristled artists paintbrush, or cut the bristlesdown to about 1/2" on a 1-2" wide paintbrush to pressdown the decal around rivet heads before the transfer paperhas been removed and the decal has been allowed to dryfor about a half hour. This also works well on skin overlapsand other irregularities. Stubborn bubbles are removed bypoking a small hole with the point of a pin at the bottombase of the rivet heads and working the air or wetting solu-tion out through the hole. A day later, you may want to goover the surface and press down any new or remainingbubbles with the brush or your finger, as by this time, thewetting solution has completely evaporated and the adhe-sive on the decal will be more aggressive. Use a softclean rag moistened with the wetting solution to work de-cals which have had the transfer paper removed so as notto mar the vinyl. Don't use the squeegee directly on thevinyl.

Some More Hints...Vinyl graphic adhesives are activated by the pressure ofthe squeegee. If the decal is accidentally caused to foldover and stick to itself, try pulling it apart with a quick tug.This is also true of the decal becoming inadvertantly stuckto a place on the surface you didn't want it. A quick tugwill pull it away without damaging the decal or adhesive.Once squeegeed down and dried however, the decal willbe damaged by removal.

Dull Splotches or StreaksIt is very common for high gloss graphics vinyls to havedull matte splotches or streaks on their surface. This hap-pens after manufacture as some aromatic chemicals leachout of the vinyl and deposit on adjoining layers while thevinyl is rolled up for storage. They are easily removed witha hair dryer, heat lamp or heat gun after the graphic hasbeen applied and allowed to dry and set. Use the lowsetting on heat guns. CAREFULLY apply heat to the sur-face of the decal, holding the heat gun away from the sur-face far enough so as not to get it too hot. Getting the

surface too hot will cause the vinyl to melt! Pass the heatgun or hair dryer back and forth to gradually heat the sur-face of the decal and you will see the splotches disappear.

Harsh Environments

On high performance aircraft, or surfaces which will berepeatedly washed, you may want to seal the edges ofyour graphic with a clear urethane sealer such as "3MEdgeseal". This helps to avoid any edge peeling of thegraphic over time from repeated washings or extremelyhigh pressure slipstreams. Ordinarily, on most surfacesof an aircraft, there is very little airflow or pressure whichcan affect the graphic due to the normal surface seperationof the airflow during flight. In areas on or near leadingedges, or in laminar flow areas, edge sealing may be re-quired. We do not suggest large graphics be placed onlaminar flow surfaces of high performance aircraft as eventhe slightest surface irregularities may potentially causeaerodynamic problems. Use an artists paintbrush to painta bead which extends 1/8" onto the graphic and the appli-cation surface (1/4" total). Smaller beads can be used onsmaller graphics. Just about any water based urethanesealer will do, but TEST it on a sample decal first to en-sure that the sealer you are using does not adversely ef-fect the vinyl.

RemovalUse a heat gun to soften the vinyl. Lift an edge and pullaway from the surface. Remove left over adhesive withany number of readily available solvents including GOOFOFF®, WD-40®, alcohol or a product we sell called ICKYSTICKEE UNSTUCK®. Test all adhesive removers on yourpaint first to ensure it doesn't damage the finish.

Vinyl Spray Mask

Vinyl Spray Mask works like any other vinyl graphic, ex-cept that it is formulated to be removable and has a sur-face finish which does not allow paint overspray to bondthe vinyl edge to the painted surface. Use Vinyl SprayMasking material when painting your graphics is the op-tion of choice. The spray mask uses a low tack adhesive,so take your time and carefully remove the transfer paperslowly the same way you would as described above.

Apply the graphic to the surface in the same way as anyother vinyl graphic, except that it must be put on DRY. Ifyou get a bubble or wrinkle, the graphic can be lifted andre-layed until bubble or wrinkle free. Be careful if liftinglargeportions of the mask after the transfer tape has been re-moved. After the graphic is down and has been rubbeddown to the surface, remove the transfer sheet. Go backover the edges to ensure the vinyl is laying down over anysurface irregularities. Most Paint Masks are made withlarge margins to protect against overspray, however, if you

need additional protection, you can add brown kraft paperaround the edges with masking tape, or by lifting the edgeof the graphic and placing the paper under the edge. Ob-serve all other precautions for painting as usual.Spray the surface with your paint, and after the paint hasdried to a tacky finish, CAREFULLY remove the maskingmaterial. Center pieces left over can be removed by care-fully using the point of an X-Acto knife to lift a corner of themask for removal.

Tricks and Tips...

• Make Sure it Sticks! Use rubbing alcohol to pre-clean the surface before applying any vinyl or spray mask.This insures skin oils and other greasy deposits have beenremoved. TEST AN Inconspicuous spot first! Somepaints, especiallyfreshly painted sur-faces may dissolvewith rubbing alco-hol.

• High humidityand smooth surfacescan cause temporaryadhesion problems. Ifit is humid and cold,you may have to waitlonger before removingthe transfer sheet, ifthe graphic has beenapplied wet.

• R e m o v i n gthe transfer sheet -(All Products) Startthe transfer sheet froma corner, and fold itback over on itself. Pull down the transfer sheet 180 de-grees from the open edge. Pull slowly and steadily as yougo, tearing off or rolling up excess transfer sheet occa-sionally. On vinyl graphics, wetting the transfer sheetwith your wetting solution helps it come off with lesstension. If the vinyl lifts up or bubbles from the tension,follow the peeling transfer tape with your finger or hand topress it back down and reduce the stretching load on thevinyl, or wait a little longer.

• If applying vinyl graphics wet, go back over themseveral times, looking for bubbles or air pockets after thetransfer sheet has been removed. When poking holes invinyl to release trapped air, remember only to use the pointof a pin. Don't use the point of a knife or razor blade asthis will leave a bigger hole. Most bubbles can be squeezedout toward the edge of the vinyl on wet applications, re-ducing the need for poking holes in the graphic. Many

very small bubbles will go away after a day or two as thetrapped wetting solution dries up and the vinyl shrinks alittle after exposure to heat or sun.• Take your time! Think out your procedure thor-oughly before you start. Every application challenge canbe overcome if you take the time to recognize the problembefore you get to it, and devise a plan for dealing with it.We can help you with most of your application questions,so feel free to give us a call!

• Other irregularities in the surface can be dealt withby using a hair dryer on the vinyl after the transfer tape hasbeen removed. Warming up the vinyl softens it and makesit more pliable. Be extremely careful not to overheat, asthis can cause the vinyl to tear. Use a moistened softtowel to work out the bubble or crease with your finger.

• Pinstriping iseasy and fun to do ifyou think out your ap-proach first.Pinstriping needs notransfer sheet and isapplied from a roll.Straght lines are easyto do, just press downone end and slightlystretch the vinyl to areference point about2-3 feet away. Wet-ting the stripes is al-lowable, but notnecessarry. If youwet, make sure to letthe stripe dry in placefor a while before rub-bing it down so it won'tcreep on you. Work-

ing around curves and turns is done by stretching and tamp-ing down the pinstripe as you work around the radius ofthe pattern. Using a few reference pencil marks along theroute of the stripe will help to achieve consistent results.There are limits to how tightly a pinstripe can be curvedhowever. If in doubt, try it first with a piece of scrap to findout where the elasticity limits are for the pinstripe mate-rial.

• Make sure to extend graphics past the edges ofdoors and hatches. Stretch and wrap the graphic or stripearound the edge of the door skin and stick it down on theback side about 1/8" past the edge.

• Make sure you do not obstruct pitot static holesor other vents or louvres.

REGISTRATION NUMBERSTYPES

There are several types of registration numbers for aircraft. Their sizes and layout vary depending on the type and ageof the aircraft being registered.

STANDARD NEWER MODEL AIRPLANES 12" high numbers, always preceeded with the letter "N".(Unless foreign registry)

STANDARD ANTIQUE OR CLASSICS 12" OR 3" Characters.Restored or repainted planes can use either size.

EXPERIMENTAL OR HOMEBUILT 12" OR 3" Characters.either size acceptable to FAA. Largest practical preferredwith exceptions made for antiques and slower aircraft.

ULTRALIGHTS REGISTERED BY U.S.U.A. 6" Characters(United States Ultralight Association) Format is two numbers followed by three letters

GENERAL GUIDLINESF.A.A. Specifies only that a block-type lettering be used, however does not specify a specific typeface. This leavesmany typefaces open for use that are a GOTHIC STYLE character, having no SERIFS or decorative property whichcould make it hard to read from a distance or on a moving object. ROMAN style lettering is not usually approved foraircraft registration numbers. Lettering may be outlined, Drop-shadowed, slanted and other coloration affects aregenerally acceptable, however, the numbers must be in a contrasting color to the background color. Any stripingdesigned to pass through the characters that could make them difficult to read easily may be dis-allowed. Letter widthsare generally required to be 2/3 of the height. Some free-hand styles can be acceptable but you should check with yourlocal FSDO first.

Vinyl lettering does not adhere well to untreated ultralight Dacron fabric and some ABS plasticsurfaces. It is best applied to a smooth surface. Custom Orders

We are eager to work with you on custom orders! In this regard, AV/GRAFIX will adhere to the customary terms andconditions as set forth by the NAPL (National Association of Printers and Lithographers). These standards are avail-able to you upon request. Basically, they provide for the following items:

1. We will charge for time to create special graphics at industry rates. This includes time spent on finalartwork production and development of experimental work.

2. You have a right and an obligation to proof-read all work we do for you before it goes into produc-tion. We will not be held responsible for errors or omissions to artwork after it has gone into produc-tion.

3. We act as advisors and service providers. It is the customers obligation to ensure that the specifi-cations for any products they order are suitable for the intended application and meet applicableregulations for the aviation or other industries. In that regard, we will not be held responsible for anydamages, direct or consequentially from the use of any product we create or sell.

4. We reserve the right to replace or correct any products that do not meet with your satisfaction. Ifthis can not be accomplished for any reason, we will refund your purchase price only.

5. We do our very best to insure delivery when promised. We will not be held liable for losses incurreddue to delays which are beyond our control, including delays from our suppliers, acts of God, or actsof war.
