Extended Support—Year 10 & 11
By now, most year 10 and 11 students will have been invited
to extended support sessions with their teachers. Students
will receive an A5 piece of paper with a list of sessions they
are required to attend for the following week. These ses-
sions are compulsory and students are expected to attend
unless they have a valid reason not to, in which case they
must discuss it with their teacher.
Additionally, there is a list of all extended support sessions
available across the curriculum each week, displayed in most
classrooms. Students are welcome to attend any session
they might find useful.
The purpose of the extended support sessions is to assist all
students who are working towards their GCSE exams in mak-
ing good progress. We would therefore encourage students
to make the most of this opportunity as it WILL have an im-
pact on their GCSE results!
Welcome to the Pupil Premium Team
Our Vision
At Brookvale-Groby Learning Campus we are committed to
supporting the learning of each and every student through-
out their time with us and for the Pupil Premium Team this
is what drives our day to day work. We hope that a combi-
nation of our ongoing support, a positive relationship with
parents and carers and a commitment from students to
work hard, all Pupil Premium students will leave BGLC with a
great set of results and a smile on their face.
What can you expect from us?
The Pupil Premium Team aim to support students in a num-
ber of ways. Mrs Marchant and Miss Robinson, our newly
appointed Pupil Premium Learning Support Assistants, will
be supporting students in lessons to ensure they are getting
the best out of every session. Both Mrs Marchant and Miss
Robinson are available in The Hub every morning from
8:00am to support students with homework and revision.;
students are encouraged to make the most of their support
As Pupil Premium Achievement Mentor I am available to
support students in a number of ways. This includes keeping
a close eye on their progress in all subjects and ensuring
they are having intervention where necessary to give them
the best opportunity for success. I will meet with Pupil Pre-
mium students as regularly as possible, to give them the
opportunity to express any concerns or worries they may
have and offer them my support and guidance. As well as
this I believe it is very important to build relationships with
parents and carers in order to create a strong network of
support for students. I am available at all Progress Evenings,
Careers Evenings and Exam Success Evenings throughout
the year and am available to discuss the support I can offer
you as parents/carers via telephone or email.
Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome
all returning and new Pupil Premium students to Brookvale
Groby Learning Campus and look forward to working with
you all.

Autumn Term Issue
Year 11 Mock Exams
During the next half term, there will be two weeks of formal
mock exams for Year 11 students. The mock exams are de-
signed to prepare students for the real GCSE examinations in
the summer.
With this in mind, students should be taking time to prepare
themselves for the mock exams as soon as possible. Things
students should be doing to prepare for mock exams in-
clude:
Ensuring they have all the relevant revision materials,
such as revision guides/workbooks, a scientific calcu-
lator and exam pack. Pupil Premium students can be
collect these FREE OF CHARGE from the science prep
room.
Making a revision timetable, ensuring they make time
to revise each subject and include time to relax also.
Attending extended support sessions and making the
most of the exert help their teachers can offer!
Good luck year 11!
20/20/20 Homework As you will be aware, this year, Brookvale Groby Learning Campus has introduced a new homework system. Every school day
students are required to complete 20 minutes of reading, 20 minutes of Maths and 20 minutes working on their knowledge or-
ganisers.
Knowledge Organisers—20 Minutes
Students will be given knowledge or-
ganisers for all of their subjects. They
should use their diary and knowledge
organiser to go over key information
for each subject. They can do this in a
number of ways including creating
mind maps, flash cards and mnemon-
ics, drawing diagrams or looking at the
information, covering it up, writing it
down and checking they are correct.
Evidence of what they have done must
be recorded in their planner everyday
and signed by a parent/carer.
Maths—20 Minutes
Students are expected to complete 20
minutes of My Maths everyday. Stu-
dents can get their My Maths login
from their maths teachers. Students
should record the work they have done
on My Maths in their planners and par-
ents/carers should sign to confirm they
have completed it.
If students are unable to complete My
Maths outside of school because they
do not have a computer, laptop or in-
ternet connection they must either use
the 20/20/20 study space to complete
their 20 minutes of maths at lunchtime
or speak to their maths teacher.
Reading—20 Minutes
Students should choose a book or mag-
azine and read for at least 20 minutes
everyday. They should record in their
planner what book they have read and
parents/carers should sign to confirm
they have done their reading.
Books can be borrowed from the
school library or local libraries, or pur-
chased from shops and charity shops.
1 Hour
The idea of the knowledge organisers is to en-
sure key information makes its way to your
long-term memory, so that you can recall it cor-
rectly in assessments and exams.
Reviewing your knowledge organisers regularly
WILL make a difference to the amount of pro-
gress you make at school!
Remember, you must
have your planner
with you every
school day!
What can parents do….?
Provide a quiet, calm space for your child to do their homework
Help your child to create a homework timetable and build in time for them
to do things they enjoy
Quiz them on information from their knowledge organisers, it is a great
way for them to retain information!
Year 11 Careers Evening!
Thursday 25th October 2018
18:00—19:30
By Christmas, all year 11 students will need to have made applications via UCAS Progress for education or training provision in
2019. In order to help students decide on where they would like to apply, BGLC are hosting a Careers Evening on Thursday
25th October 2018, 18:00—19:30.
The evening will include a presentation on Future Pathways at 18:15 and 18:45 which we would like to encourage students
and parents/carers to attend as it is an opportunity to receive valuable information.
There will also be a range of organisations attending, providing students with the opportunity to gather some really useful in-
formation, this will help to inform their decisions when making applications to further or higher education later in the term.
Organisations who will be in attendance include:
Loughborough College
Loughborough University
De Montfort University
Leicester Academy of Music, Technology & Arts
Stephenson College
Heart of England Training Ltd
