From the lush green forests of central India.
Precious golden frankincense
4
Deep within the forested heartland of Central India, in the district of Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, wild Frankincense known as ‘Indian Olibanum’ or ‘Indian Frankincense’ grows in abundance. The sub-tropical climate and fertile mountain ranges have been an idyllic environment for the native Boswellia serrata and today supports a productive essential oil industry.
Sydney Essential Oil Co.’s supplier is one of the largest producers of world class Frankincense oil in India, and are committed to fostering a sustainable ecosystem and contributing to the social and economic development of local tribal communities.
Rich Cultural HistoryThe word frankincense is derived from the French ‘franc encens’, literally meaning ‘high-quality incense’. Traded across the Mediterranean incense route for centuries, Frankincense has been treasured as a jewel of the land that was at times more valuable than gold.
Throughout the ancient world, from Egypt to China and from India to Italy, every part of the tree including the roots, bark, flowers and resin have all had their distinct uses and cultural and religious significance.
When burned, the fragrant smoke from the roots was thought to symbolise prayers rising to the heavens. Egyptian women would then use the charred ash as kohl for their eyes and the flowers were steeped in water for digestive tonics. Utilised in women’s medicine, the bark was chewed to help ease morning sickness, and in powdered form, was applied to create a soothing ointment to provide relief for sore muscles and promote skin healing.
In India, Frankincense has also played an important role in Ayurvedic medicine, revered for its skin revitalising, balancing and purifying properties. Today, Frankincense oil is still a highly prized and precious ingredient for perfumes, soaps, cosmetic formulations and essential oil blends. >

Secrets of Indian FrankincenseSitting at 462 metres above sea level, the central Indian region of Madhya Pradesh offers a tropical haven for the Boswellia serrata species. Native to India and parts of Pakistan, forests of Frankincense span the rocky hills of the Satpura Mountains down to the plains of the Narmada River Valley.
In contrast to the harsh, dry landscape of Northern Africa, home to the Boswellia carterii species and Sydney Essential Oil Co.’s Certified Organic Frankincense Olibanum oil; central India offers a rich, abundant environment. With a dry moderate summer and monsoon rains from July to September, the climate supports the verdant growth and quality resin production from the Boswellia serrata tree.
The stately deciduous trees are moderate to large in size with a divided trunk, a light spreading crown and small white flowers. The bark has a greyish-green ash appearance that peels off in thin, papery flakes to reveal the golden brown resin hidden within the tree.
Taking 10 years to mature, Frankincense trees grow wild from the natural germination of seeds within the forest. The Boswellia serrata can produce exceptional quality resin for up to 3-4 years. After which time, the tree is rested for 4 months ensuring the trees are not depleted and continue to be a sustainable and renewable resource for future generations.
The harvest season begins in October after the monsoon rains have passed and continues through until the middle of March. The resin is tapped from the Frankincense tree by making incisions in the bark allowing it to exude slowly into specially made bamboo baskets over a period of 2-3 days until it hardens. The aromatic resin is then broken into small pieces and graded according to its colour, shape and size.
Collection of the Boswellia resin is coordinated through an old established network of local tribal communities. Sydney Essential Oil Co.’s supplier is dedicated to supporting the health and >

sustainability of the communities, having adopted the two tribal groups of Kathmai and Binega. They provide free education for the local children with their school ‘Happy Days’ and have significantly improved the health care and living conditions of the local people with initiatives including hygienic bathing and toilet facilities, medical camps, installing water tanks and regular tree planting.
Frankincense Essential OilFrankincense essential oil from India is produced by steam distillation of the graded resin and has its own unique aroma, distinct from that of North African Frankincense. Wonderfully fragrant, the pale yellow coloured Indian Frankincense oil has an exquisite scent with deeper more balsamic and woody notes that are profoundly evocative in perfumery and essential oil blends. It is particularly striking when partnered with bright citrus and rich woody tones in aromatic combination.
Frankincense oil can bring a beautiful feeling of peace and relaxation. Added to a bath or massage blend, the melodic and meditative aroma will help calm your mind and provide uplifting comfort during times of unease and worry.
With impressive revitalising and anti-ageing properties, Frankincense oil imparts some of the best skin loving qualities you can find. It is renowned for its wrinkle softening effect, giving new life to tired and ageing skin. Superior for oily skin types, its astringent action can also help balance the complexion and is an energising addition to men’s skincare and aftershave products. 1

ESSENTIAL OILS
13
In this issue of Oily, we discover the clear, clean and refreshing aromas of the Herbal Olfactive Family that will revitalise your body and mind.
Characteristics of the Herbal FamilyHerbal Family essential oils are commonly sourced from the seeds, flowering tops and leaves of powerfully aromatic annual herbs. They are recognised for their complex properties varying from invigorating and awakening, to a focussed calm that can enhance a natural cosmetic or massage blend with fresh, green tones reminiscent of a crisp Autumn morning.
The aroma profiles of Herbal essential oils include the penetrating and cooling top notes of Peppermint, and the warm and slightly spicy middle notes of Marjoram.
Aromatherapists will often choose Herbal oils to support and revive a tired body and mind or to provide relief for aching muscles and to offer comfort and clarity during times of worry.
Essential Oils to know from the Herbal Family 1. Basil steam distillation > flowering plantBasil oil’s aroma profile varies depending on the chemotype (CT) of the oil. Chavicol and Linalool CT are both strong and clear and characterised by their awakening effect. Chavicol is an intense camphor-like herbal scent, while Linalool is more sweetly spiced, grassy and almost minty.
Basil CT Chavicol imparts a crisp and penetrating aroma, providing powerful support to help purify your environment and sharpen your senses. When used in a vaporiser, Basil CT Chavicol is a valuable oil for enhancing study and concentration. >
12
Herbal Family essential oils offer green and herbaceous
aromas with diverse cosmetic and aromatherapeutic properties.
14
ESSENTIAL OILS
Basil CT Linalool is a more calming oil popular with practitioners as it acts as a soothing and cooling agent for aggravated skin or tired and aching muscles. The oil imparts a refreshing tonic action helping to stimulate sluggish and congested skin.
2. Fennel Sweet steam distillation > seedThe bright aniseed aroma and clean herbaceous tones of Fennel Sweet make it a lively scented ingredient. The oil is a popular addition in detoxifying massage products to help revitalise the body.
With impressive cleansing and toning properties it can also help rejuvenate a dull complexion when utilised in skincare formulations. In a vaporiser blend, it will help promote inner strength in the face of adversity.
3. Marjoram Sweet steam distillation > flowering plantA woody, sweet and spicy herbaceous scent with tones of camphor, used in massage and aromatherapy for warming and comforting the body and spirit. Marjoram Sweet induces a calming, relaxing and sedative effect helping to relieve nervous stress and tension. It also promotes feelings of happiness and can be supportive for people who have suffered shock or trauma.
It is a great addition to fortifying skincare products, enhancing the complexion and improving the appearance of dull, greyed skin.
4. Peppermint steam distillation > whole plantThe unmistakable scent of Peppermint is penetrating and vibrant, and recognised for its ability to cool the body and provide a fresh, lively sensation. When incorporated into natural cosmetic formulations it can keep the skin soft whilst minimising blackheads and breakouts. It is also ideal for use in haircare products as it reduces greasiness by regulating sebum production on the scalp.
Its soothing, cooling effects can enhance after-sun and aloe vera products, and are highly beneficial in helping to relieve itchiness caused by dry skin.
5. Spearmint steam distillation > whole plantSpearmint is distinguished from Peppermint by its slightly sweeter, fresher and softer aroma. In composition Spearmint only contains minimal amounts of Menthol which can be beneficial if you find the cooling nature of Peppermint overpowering.
Emotionally, it is stimulating and uplifting for the exhausted mind and helps balance the negative feelings of stress and worry. Recognised for its soothing relief for irritated skin, Spearmint is often used in body and haircare formulations to help reduce itching and minimise dandruff.
6. Oregano steam distillation > flowers, leaves and stemsA member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family, Oregano is one of the more potent Herbal oils due to its purifying properties. The robust cleansing and restorative action can help promote a healthy complexion and it is an ideal choice for enlivening foot care products. The powerful, spicy, camphor-like aroma is also often used as a fragrance component in soaps, colognes and perfumes, especially men’s fragrances.
Blending with Herbal OilsHerbal Family essential oils are powerful, clear top notes for a blend. They engage and enliven your senses bringing refreshing and uplifting tones to an aroma profile. Don’t be afraid to experiment with these delicious herbaceous scents as the results will be impressive. 1

SME FORUM

Sydney Essential Oil Co. has updated the safety information and labelling of our products to ensure compliance with the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). This ensures the transparency of information and ultimate safety of all our customers.
Australia has recently adopted the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) developed by the United Nations. Previous Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) have been replaced with new Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and new product labelling.
All products supplied by SEOC are accompanied by an SDS. This document provides 16 updated sections relating to health and safety, hazards, handling and transportation.
The SDS includes internationally recognisable classifications such as the UN number, International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredient (INCI) name and the Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) number of the product where relevant. >
GHS Safety Data Sheets & Labels
Regulatory changes to SEOC’s documentation and labelling.
SME FORUM
18 19
NEW GHS REQUIREMENTS
From 1 January 2017 SEOC introduced
the new GHS requirements for
all SDS documents and labelling of
products over 500mL and 500g.
These changes include:
1. PICTOGRAMS
Hazard pictograms are displayed in
a red diamond in the SDS and on
the label. They represent the physical,
health and/or environmental hazards
relevant to the product.
For example, symbols may include
a Flame for Flammable Liquids, or an
Exclamation for Irritants that may
be harmful if swallowed or may cause
skin irritation.
Personal Protection Equipment
pictograms will also be displayed in
the SDS as a round graphic, advising
the recommended equipment for
the safe handling of every product.
Such as: safety glasses, gloves or overalls.
2. SIGNAL WORDS
Signal words ‘Danger’, Warning’
and ‘Hazard’ appear in the SDS
and the label to help identify the
severity of a hazard. ‘Danger’ is used
for more significant hazards whereas
‘Warning’ is less serious.
3. HAZARD AND
PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS
Previous Risk (R) phrases have been
replaced with new Hazard (H) codes
and statements. They are used to
identify the class, category and degree
of hazard and are displayed as
an alpha numeric code accompanied
by a descriptive phrase.
Eg. H301 Toxic if swallowed.
Previous Safety (S) phrases have been
replaced with new Precautionary (P)
codes and statements. They recommend
safety measures to prevent adverse
effects from exposure or incorrect
storage and handling. They are also
displayed as an alpha numeric code
accompanied by a descriptive phrase.
Eg. P271 Use in a well ventilated area.
4. PRODUCT COMPOSITION
In the Code of Practice for the Preparation
of Safety Data Sheets, the composition
and information of ingredients must
be disclosed.
These are to be displayed as a list of
ingredients in descending order by
mass or volume. Exact concentration is
not required if commercially confidential
and a proportional percentage range
is acceptable.
BENEFITS OF GLOBAL COMPLIANCE
The global compliance of safety
information and product labelling under
the GHS will ensure our customers
receive more extensive information on
the storage, shipping, handling, first aid
and protection equipment required for
each of our products.
The information will also be tailored
to the industries in which the materials
will be utilised, ensuring ultimate user
safety.
Local and international freight
carriers will require a compliant SDS to
ship all SEOC products. Manufacturers
and resellers who incorporate our
ingredients in products for sale will also
need to create their own SDS including
the composition of their product.
This will be the responsibility of the
individual and not the duty of the Sydney
Essential Oil Co.
Whilst we have developed our
documentation in line with Australian
standards, International standards may
vary from country to country.

international compliance requirements

NEWS
Organic Rosehip is an extremely popular
product that has faced some challenges
over the past few years. The global
shortage of the carrier oil has become quite
severe and there is no foreseeable end in
sight. But with the introduction of our new
Certified Organic Rosehip Seed CO2 extract

the oil in a highly active form.
ROSEHIP SEED CO2 EXTRACT
– CERTIFIED ORGANIC ACO
Carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction is a gentle
processing method that results in an
outstanding quality product with little to
no degradation of the most sensitive
constituents. During the extraction process
the temperature is maintained around
40ºC, ensuring the natural bioactive
elements found in the Rosa canina seeds
remain molecularly intact. The resulting oil soluble liquid has a
yellowy orange colour and a pleasant,
slightly sweet oily aroma. It is rich in the
essential fatty acids Omega-3 (Linolenic
acid) and Omega-6 (Linoleic acid).
These components offer incredibly
beneficial properties to the skin and are
key to Rosehip’s ever increasing popularity.
When incorporated into cosmetic
formulations Rosehip Seed CO2 extract
imparts wonderful soothing and skin
softening properties. Your complexion will
feel soft and plump as it is revitalised by
the potent organic nutrients.
It is an excellent inclusion in creams,
serums or zone-targeting products that are
designed to support younger looking skin.
Anti-ageing properties make it a popular
addition to speciality products that are
intended to minimise the appearance of
fine lines and wrinkles. Plus it can help
reduce redness or irritation caused by dry
skin so it is perfect for chapped lip balms or
roll on oil blends.
Body creams and lotions will also have
their hydrating action boosted by the
addition of this active ingredient and it is
even suitable for use in men’s facial care
products such as an aftershave balm or
light weight moisturiser.
For product developers, formulating
with Certified Organic Rosehip Seed CO2
extract is notably economical as the
recommended percentage of use is from
0.3% up to 3% in total. You can achieve
exemplary results with only small amounts
to ensure your product costs are viable for
commercial production. 1
