Parish Walks (See photograph on P2)

Bank Holiday Sunday (remember, the dry day!), saw a goodlynumber of walkers and dogs set out for the fourth parish walkof the year. What should have been a dry-underfoot stroll turnedout to be ‘sticky’ in places because of summer rain.Nevertheless, the walks have been very popular, giving peoplefrom different parts of the parish the opportunity to explore newpaths whilst getting to know new faces – sometimes getting toknow their neighbours! It’s not a route-march, we often stop tore-group.Our June walk took us on an interesting excursion intoPerranarworthal parish returning via Bissoe and Coombe, and inAugust we scaled the heights to United Downs and WhealClifford via Sunny Corner, following the spine of the hill downinto Point Mills. There was some road walking, there has to be,because footpaths don’t always connect. The next Walk will be between Christmas and the New Year –watch for the posters.

4 - Cusgarne Community School Update Tree Wardens

Another busy year draws to an end.

The Jubilee celebrations saw everyone in a home made hat and red, white and blue clothes. There was a picnic lunchoutside a photo of which was in last Parish Newsletter.

There has been much to celebrate. Five children received awards from the Truro and Roseland Learning CommunityAwards at a special ceremony in the Cathedral. At this a special choir sang which included two children from Cusgarne.

Years 5 and 6 took part in a Structural Engineering day run by the University of Exeter in Cornwall held at TremoughCampus. The teams had to design and build a Sports stadium, made out of paper, competing against other schools. Ourteams built two amazing stadiums and were awarded second and third places. Silver and bronze certificates have beenpresented.

Classes One and Two spent a day at St Michael's Mount. Two Swiss students have worked in school bringing in aspectsof another language and culture. Percussion, summer sports and mini soccer clubs have been well attended.

The school took part in an Olympics Sports festival at Richard Lander. Cusgarne represented Great Britain and dressed inthe team colours including finger nails!Every one participated in a sport event. For the Olympic Art each child made a tile depicting a country's flag . These wereon display in the Cathedral during the last week of term.

The musical play, "Dragon" was a huge success and most enjoyable. Again every child took part with great enthusiasm. The costumes and scenery were also superb. All the staff and parents involved deserve congratulations.

SCHOOL PLAYING FIELD PROGRESS

The field is becoming a sports field at long, long, last, after nearly five years of planning applications, numerous surveysand battles with the weather. We fervently hope it will be in use next summer. We are most indebted to Nick Datson whois the project manager.

In recent months, big earthworks have taken place in the field. As can be seen from the photographs ON PAGE 2, the fieldhas been levelled and drainage put in to what was a very “wet” surface, mainly caused by natural springs.

The topsoil is now being placed onto the prepared surface, prior to rolling it flat and then grass seeding it before the autumnterm. (it might have happened by the time you read this!). By next spring, the grass should have taken and be available touse by the children and school.

The last stages of the project (subject to finance) will be to provide a safety fence and repair the hedges.

Another eventful year, marked with fantastic achievements. The school grows not only in numbers but in its strengths.

ODDS ‘N ENDSOVERGROWN HEDGESWith the growing season we are experiencing, some of the hedges on the narrower roads andlanes are extending out into the road, causingproblems for pedestrians and also cars, whentwo meet and have to pass each other. So - a reminder to those whose boundary hedgesmeet the highway or a public byway, – it is yourresponsibility to cut them. Cornwall Councilonly carry out minimal work at crossroads anddanger spots. If they have to cut an area that hasbeen neglected, they will bill the landowner.Although trimming during March – August isbest avoided (birds nesting), it is encouraged tomaintain the free flow of traffic. This also applies where vegetation extends overpavements.CARPET BOWLSAlthough this “strays” into Perran-ar-worthalparish, it might be of interest to parishionerswith autumn evenings approaching.Perran Carpet Bowls Club starts Thursday 6thSeptember at Perran-ar-worthal Village Hall at7pm-9.30 pm ish.All new members are very welcome - the firstthree weeks are free to newcomersJane BlackburnSecretary Tel 01872 862082

DOGSWouldn’t be normal if there wasn’t a mention about dogs ‘mess’!It’s a good news story for a change. Our “Litter Picker” reports that the litter bins are being well used by dogowners to make their deposits. There a fewer little plastic bags being thrown into the hedgerow, and that has to begood. When you put them in the bins, can you make sure you tie the bags securely – makes his job much more pleasant!43 BUS SERVICEThe 43 bus travels from Truro via Perranwell, Frogpool and Gwennap to Camborne. I have been contacted byStuart Douglas from Perranwell who is in contact with First regarding the unpunctuality of their buses and some ofthe not-so-helpful drivers. I have told him that to date, I haven’t had any complaints reported to me, but if youhave had bad experiences, let me know (with the dates & details), and Stuart will include it in his discussions. He is also taking First to task over their train service, in particular relating to Perranwell Station. Anything youwant to tell him about that?CORNISH HOUSEHOLDERS OFFERED FREE INSULATIONHouseholders in Cornwall are being encouraged to act quickly to take advantage of a Cornwall Council backed free loft and cavity wallinsulation scheme before funding runs out later this year.Cornwall Council has previously provided funding for free insulation to householders over the age of 70 or in receipt of qualifyingbenefits.   For a limited time Cornwall Council is extending its free insulation offer to all homeowners and private tenants in Cornwall. The offer is subject to availability and has been launched at a time when the current system of grant funded insulation offers is coming toan end.The Council will deliver this scheme through a partnership with Community Energy Plus. By extending the free insulation offer theCouncil hopes to encourage the remaining households in Cornwall with un-insulated lofts and cavity walls to act now, before it’s too late, and enjoy warmer homes and lower heating bills this winter.”The Council’s free insulation offer is subject to the completion of a free, no obligation insulation survey and to qualify for free loftinsulation properties must be less than 60mm of existing insulation already in place. For further information or to apply for free and discounted insulation through Community Energy Plus visit www.cep.org.uk or callFreephone 0800 954 1956.

“Cornwall’s mining heritage has played its part in the London 2012 Olympics as tin mined and smelted in the county was used to createthe bronze medals. The tin was mined at South Crofty fourteen years ago, and smelted and stored at Wheal Jane. It is though to be theonly candidate to match the high levels of purity needed – more than 99.9% - for medals that will grace the necks of the world’s finestathletes.”

August Newsletter

Now the sun is shining it’s strange to think that we have had rain almost every day since the last newsletteruntil mid July. The rain stopped just in time for our 30th anniversary and sports day. It was a great finish tothe term. A great send off for our children moving on to school. This year we have seen 21 children move onto St Day and Carharrack School with others going to Cusgarne, Trewergie, Chacewater and Lanner. Wewould like to say a fond farewellto all these children and theirfamilies and wish them all thebest for the future.

Despite the rain the children haveplayed outside, challenging theirknowledge, every day. Despite thewet weather gear we did howeverget through a lot of spare clothes! Not to be put off by the weatherwe went to Carharrack Park onemorning. It rained on the way butwas dry when we were there andthe children had a great timeplaying, chalking and picnicking.

IMPORTANT NEWS

The Tony Hitchens Roof AppealThe north facing roof of the church is deteriorating and must be replaced, as must the roof of the lych gate. It was decidedthat the appeal for funds should be named for Tony, who many of you will have met and remember with affection. He tookcare of the church for a long time, and oversaw the two valley roofs of the church being renewed. We are applying to English Heritage for a grant, but we shall need to raise money ourselves. At present there is the chanceto win £10 if you buy a slate for the new roof. There will also be fund raising events in future. Any help is welcome.Gwennap PCC

The total raised was £2375.00 which was less than in previous years, as the choirs’ costs havebeen rising. We thank Keith and everyone who helped.

More information when we have it.

LOCAL TRAILSAlong with our neighbouring parishes, we have had a website created showing three trails through ourrespective parishes that leave, and return to, the Coast to Coast (Devoran to Portreath) route. The trails takewalkers/cyclists through some of our mining landscape, also to Gwennap Church and a shorter ‘loop’through Frogpool, Cusgarne returning to Point Mills. The website details are http://www.cornwalltrails.net
