Editorial
Members will notice that we now have a different Editor. I have taken on this role for a 12month period, as Andrew has had some pressing personal commitments and has also moved house. One of life’s most stressful events, we are told.
I apologise in advance for poor literary style, but my aim is to make the newsletter interesting to one and all. I would like to encourage other members to provide me with some input and I would like to be in the enviable position of having a bank of articles to use in future editions. Pictures and photographs will be gratefully received, handled carefully and returned to the owner.
Do you have a story to tell? Have you been to other events or ships that our members would like to hear about? Why not drop me a line and include any photographs. You can make contact via email, or to my home address: 54, Old Kennels Lane, Olivers Battery, Winchester, Hampshire. SO22 4JS.
Our summer season is over now, but we still have some December sailings to come. Why not spend a few hours with us in the lead up to Christmas. You know it makes sense.
Note to contributors: Copy date for the Winter edition is the 31st December 2007 and my aim is to get to press by the end of January to enable members to reserve places for our 2008 Excursion programme.
Steam on,
Graham Temporary Editor

View from the BridgeChairman’s Column
I have mentioned many times in past Chairmans’s reports that the three biggest problems facing Shieldhall’s future are rising costs. These being fuel and insurance, and legislation. The cost of fuel as we know to our motoring cost is rising fast, in these days of litigation, insurance goes up every year. We have no control over these rising costs unfortunately. Legislation is tightening up all the time, and we must keep on top of this. When the powers to be say jump, we must answer how high. That is the reason why we have exercises with the Coastguards, to help us keep ahead of the game. Our Training Officer Mike Davis has put a lot of time into scenarios such as evacuating the ship in an orderly manner. We have a Safety committee, who report to the ECM. The Safety Officer at present is Terry Winsborough, who steps down at the half yearly meeting. We must thank Terry for all his help in the past.
We have to keep ahead of things, people hate changes, I certainly do, even an old dinosaur like myself has had to become semi computer literate. A worrying thing is that legislation has stopped the steaming of the Delta Queen an American stern-wheeler, despite protests and pleas from several senators to the Senate. (note from Editor: Delta Queen was give a reprieve from SOLAS requirements to continue steaming a number or years ago, but with her extensive woodwork, the implications of the SOLAS 2010 requirements have beaten her. Unfortunately, she is likely to be in good company as numerous of the older cruise ships will fail to meet this requirement too.)
The sailing season has now ended, the ship is now under going winter maintenance, the hard working engineers and deck crew, are heavily involved in this. The engineers are taking the engines apart and building them up again, the deck crew are chipping and painting the deck fittings. The ECM thank them all. We hope that the crew who came to the crew party enjoyed it.
We now have some enthusiastic new Masters joining us, my welcome to them. To end on a sour note, I have had one or two problems with members upsetting other members. Indeed on one occasion I have had to come down and tell them to leave the ship. I know that we are all volunteers, but some things are unacceptable. I am also very annoyed that Shieldhall Matters has not appeared. The non-appearance has cost us money, the Captain’s dinner was not advertised, the lucky draw which Jan has worked hard on has most certainly lost money over this. On top of this we have not been able to let members know of the half yearly meeting. My sincere apologies, but I am taking several steps to get the next issues out on time, starting with a new printer. One of our pursers Paul McElroy, has offered to print it.

Whispers from the Engine roomPlease excuse the slight alteration of title, but “Shieldhall’s” machinery often whispers, but never mutters!
The winter overhaul work is well advanced, and a large proportion of machinery surveys were carried out yesterday. Because of the December sailings the work program is in two sections with the boiler cleaning in store for us after Christmas.
Main Engines , Port HP opened up and all appears satisfactory Starbd LP stripped and appears ok. Both passed survey inspection.
Boilers. Both boilers 'water wedged' until Christmas.
Auxiliaries. The following were opened up and surveyed:Starbd Air pumpPort Boiler feed pump.Port Hp fuel oil pump.Boiler FD Fan.Aft Capstan engine.
All are now ready for reassembly.

Gift Aid and your subscriptions/donations.
A familiar plea to all members who pay UK Income Tax to ensure that they have completed the Gift Aid declaration. This only needs to be completed once and we only need to be notified if your circumstances change.
Currently, we are able to recover 28p for every £ that you give in donations or subscriptions and most years, we recover over £1,000 from the Tax man. All very legal and quite satisfying.
This year, we recovered over £1,100 via Gift Aid and expect to exceed this figure by the end of our financial year.
Have you made a legacy to “Shieldhall” in your will? If not, please consider it as a way of keeping our ship afloat and active for future generations.

‘Lucky Ticket’ Draw Update
Sales of the Lucky Tickets are, regrettably, starting slowly. Hopefully the news that we have been donated a superb and very exciting First Prize will accelerate the sales significantly. The new First Prize is a trip in a vintage Tiger Moth. We are extremely grateful to the owner of the Tiger Moth, Mr Robert Woods CBE, who is one of our new members. I only wish I were not the Promoter, as I cannot think of a more exciting prize, but to win it would not be fair to others participating – I will come and photograph the winner enjoying the prize! For anyone who does not enjoy flying, don’t worry, there are other good prizes!
Full details of the Draw are included in this newsletter in a full page advert. As I explained in the last issue, fundraising is absolutely essential to the working future of the Shieldhall, so do please participate in this project and encourage your friends to do so.
Fundraising in our environment is not an easy task, but there are many ways that you can support the ship, even if you cannot get down to work on her, or do not wish to buy draw tickets - by telling friends and colleagues about the ship and encouraging them to participate with you by means of membership, Engine Room Experience courses, excursions or functions, donating prizes etc.
Any queries, offers of prizes, suggestions for fundraising projects etc, do please give me a call, email me or write to me – details below.
Looking forward to hearing from you,SincerelyJan

Lionel Hand 1925 - 2007
It is with regret that I have to report the death of Lionel Hand on 13th March 2007. Lionel was one of the longest serving working members having joined the Shieldhall in 1988. He was a working member until quite recently when ill health finally stopped him from coming down to the ship, but he still used to have his Wife Margaret drive him down to the ship where he would stand at the bottom of the gangway and chat to members as they came aboard.
Lionel did a lot of sailings both local and when the ship went away. He suffered a lot of pain and discomfort for most of the time that I knew him and, despite a lot of mickey-taking and comments, was always there for a laugh.
Lionel was the engine room storekeeper and used to drive the port main engine. He would complain bitterly if he had to drive the starboard main engine, until somebody would swap over with him.
When it became difficult for him to access the engine room, be became deck and steering gear engineer.
Lionel was born on Boxing Day 1925 in Cape Town (this led to mickey-taking as to him being a Colonial). During the war he joined the Royal South African Air Force and was a tail gunner in Liberator bombers. He served in Egypt and Italy. He was demobbed in 1946 and worked and sailed on deep-sea trawlers from Cape Town. He joined Union Castle Line and sailed on the Athlone Castle.
Margaret and Lionel met on a blind date in 1950 and were married in 1952. They had twins, Tony and Terri. Making Southampton his home, he worked at Pirelli’s and Ford’s.
Margaret has worked in the Shieldhall shop in the past.
Lionel was an accomplished harmonica player and cartoonist. He will be long remembered by his friends and shipmates and when we sit down over a pint and have a chat, his name will keep coming up and he will always be part of Shieldhall’s folklore.

An Ode to the 3rd Engineer
In memory to Lionel Hand who passed away earlier this year.
When the last crosshead has been tightened
And the Third Engineer laid to rest
When his tools are all rusted and broken
Just steal what you think are the best
For red hot cranks and Seconds pranks
Will not our Third annoy
For in robes of white he’s a shining light
and an everlasting joy
No gear to sling or rods to swing
Or bottom ends to tighten
No nuts to slack or glands to pack
Or firemen to frighten
For on that far and distant shore
Beyond the Vale of Tears
He has passed the portals of the gate
Reserved for Engineers
So we will leave him in God’s acre
For he has died in his own firm belief
That heaven is reserved for the workmen
And hell set apart for the Chief

2007 Excursion Programme
Our summer programme has completed and our results have been as mixed as the weather. As always, book in advance to be sure of a place.
This year, we are running three trips in December to celebrate the arrival in service of the new Cunard Cruise ship, “Queen Victoria”. Please Note that the date for the arrival of “Queen Victoria” has been advanced to the 7th December. Timings are still not confirmed but expect that about a month beforehand, details will become available.
Members will notice that this years programme has differed from previous years and we have tried to add extra interest by planning the trips to coincide with departures of various cruise ships, from Southampton. It has meant that we are often running a single trip over a weekend, rather than two as we have found that our Solent cruises are not very popular. The downside is that all of the costs of raising steam have to be loaded against a single sailing and this raises our breakeven costs significantly. There will also be hidden costs with machinery, due to the effects of heating and cooling of the components, particularly the boilers. In 2008 we will be looking very closely at how to balance the trips and reduce the financial and mechanical impacts. Members can help by introducing people to “Shieldhall”, preferably in groups, as it allows us to consider some of the less favoured trips.
Car Parking at 48 Berth has been tight again this year and part of the £3:50 charge goes back to ABP. This allows them to get a little income from our berth, but nowhere near the commercial rate. If you use your vehicle when taking an excursion, please try to fill it with other passengers. It keeps your costs down but also helps us.
Looking forward just over a year, Cunard have announced that the “Queen Elizabeth 2” will sail for Dubai in November 2008, as she is withdrawn from service. “Shieldhall” has been privately chartered by the Ocean Liner Society for the event, but members will be able to book through them, if necessary. Details to follow in the next newsletter. At this stage, we will plan our own public excursion to greet the “QE2”, as she comes in to Southampton for the final time. The date is published as the 11 th November 2008 and is likely to arrive around 07:00. Final details to be determined, but if you wish to get on to the list, send a £10 deposit to Richard Walker, our Ticket Manager.
Next year may also see a West Country programme, as it is likely that we will have to dry-dock in Falmouth again and one way of recouping our fuel costs will be to run excursions whilst we are there and also, for parts of the passage journeys.
Please note that due to large increases in fuel price (over 30%), our ticket prices will have to increase in 2008. To ease the “pain”, why not make regular payments once you have selected the excursions that you wish to take?
Your support is valued and we look forward to welcoming you aboard.
Graham Mackenzie, Managing Director, Solent Steam Packet (Services) Ltd;

Heritage Lottery Fund Projects Update.Members will recall that the Heritage Lottery Fund made a grant to us for up to £297,500 for various works on “Shieldhall”, back in June 2006. I am pleased to report that all of the works have been completed and we have completed under budget at £176,544.
The breakdown of the various projects is:Midships cargo tanks, spent £103,261Chain locker bulkhead, spent £3,644Replacement of the roller fairlead bases and refitting of the rollers, £3,647Refurbishment of the deck windlasses and replacement of derrick arm,
£3,945
Re-caulking of the foc’sle and aft mooring deck, £18,7862006 dry-dock, including crew and fuel costs £48,838Replacement of fresh and sea water header tanks and pipework £20,654Replacement of fuel bunker line, £3,754
Making a grand total expended of £206,529, of which we get 82.71%.
Our own volunteers took on the Bunker Line replacement, Roller Fairlead base renewal and roller refitting and also, the refurbishment of the deck windlasses and derrick arm replacement, as well as managing the contractors for the other tasks. A good job and very well done.
At the end of the project, HLF agreed to extend the grant to include some works on the asphalt coating on the after end of the Boat Deck. This has enabled a small amount of steelwork to be replaced and the ever, enlarging gap to be closed. This has cost just over £5,000 and has made a major difference to the appearance. This will be further enhanced once the area has been repainted. We have also been allowed to engage professional help to develop a major revision to our Business Plan.
We are now embarking on a new grant request to upgrade crew accommodation space and facilities, plus other improvements that will be considered necessary.
Graham Mackenzie, HLF Project Co-ordinator.
