Volkswagen Jetta: Blowing down the highway

The Volkswagen Jetta debuted in 1979 as a small family car, but it was re-ceived as hip by college-age drivers in America, and in six generations, some 10 million Jettas have been sold worldwide.

The name Jetta is thought to be homage to the Atlan-tic jet stream, consistent with Volkswagen’s naming its vehicles after promi-nent winds. These breezy designations also included the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after the northern to north-eastern katabatic or downhill wind in the Adri-atic) and the Volkswagen Scirocco (after the warm, dry, tropical Mediterranean wind that originates in the Sahara).

This sixth-generation Jet-ta began production in 2010 and was primarily designed by Volkswagen Mexico under the supervision of Volkswagen Germany, with 70 percent of its parts de-signed and manufactured in Mexico. However, Jetta is still German in terms its engineering, substantial and confident feel, ride smoothness and lines.

Updated interiorFor 2013, Jetta has up-

dated its SE trim (the model I tested) with chrome-trimmed interior switches, new decorative metallic trim on the dash and door panels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake lever. Additional interior enhancements for front-seat occupants include an adjustable center armrest and power-recline on both seats. Exterior augmen-tations include a chrome radiator grille and chrome window trim. The upscale SEL trim adds a six-way power driver seat with manual lumbar support, sport-comfort driver and front passenger seats, and a soft-touch dash. A two-tone black-and-beige interior complements the changes for 2013. But even the entry-level Jetta models have improved standard at-tributes including air con-ditioning, one-touch auto up/down power windows, power locks with keyless entry, and power heated exterior mirrors, along with a host of safety features including Electronic Stabil-ity Control, six air bags, four-wheel disc brakes, and Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System.

Curb appealJetta’s curb appeal starts

with its larger footprint, as it was completely rede-signed for the 2011 model

year with a longer wheel-base from the previous generation, and 2.9 inches were added to the overall length. Still a compact, at 182.2 inches long. 70 inches wide and 57.2 inches high on a 104.4-inch wheelbase, Jetta seats five and weighs in at a light 3083 pounds. With unitary construction with steel stampings, Jetta has clear, precise lines and muscular surfaces to com-municate elegance, and an upscale demeanor.

At the front, the coupe-like incline of the wind-screen and the consistent use of horizontal lines define the Jetta’s design. The horizontal blades in the grille, together with the blades in the lower intake, are designed to make the Jetta appear wider and more dynamic.

Power optionsThe front-wheel drive

Jetta offers three power choices, all with aluminum cylinder heads and cast iron blocks. The 2.0-liter 4-cyl-inder engine provides 115 hp and 125 lbs.-ft, of torque and gets 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for manual transmission and 23/29 for automatic. My test drive came with a 2.5-liter in-line 5-cylinder engine that sup-plied 170 hp and 177 lbs.-ft. of torque and was estimated at 24 mpg city and 31 mpg highway for automatic. Finally, a 2.0-liter turbod-iesel is offered at 140 hp and 236 lbs.-ft of torque for 30 mpg city and 42 mpg for automatic.

Word is that the 2.0-li-ter is underpowered, and my 2.5 showed hesitant throttle response, but good muscle at speed and on long inclines. During track tests, my Jetta sprinted from zero to 60mph in a decent 8.8 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 16.8.

Roomy interiorInterior space is not like

a typical compact at 38.2 inches of front headroom with 37.1 inches in row two; shoulder room is 55.2 inches in front and 53.6 inches in the rear and legroom is a comfortable 41.2 inches for row one and 38.1 inches for

the second seat passengers.Jetta is packed with

interior tech, but its hard plastic surfaces and design seem lower scale than the exterior look. Touchscreen, dual-zone climate con-trol, rearview camera and entertainment systems are top-notch.

From a safety perspec-tive, Jetta has earned 4 stars in government crash tests, and is outfitted with the safety systems mentioned earlier and active front head restraints.

The 2013 Jetta comes in nine trims – S, SE, SEL, TDI, GLI and Hybrid Base, Hybrid SE, SEL and SEL Premium – with a total of 17 configurations (with and without sunroof, navigation, convenience, etc.). The Base S starts at $16,720, SE at $19,015, SEL at $22,895 and Hybrid at $24,995. My test Jetta SE with the Convenience Package and Sunroof start-ed at $21,670 and included 16-inch Sedona alloy wheels (upgraded from base steel wheels) and Blue-tooth with audio streaming, the tilting/sliding tinted sunroof and Premium VIII touchscreen sound sys-tem with HD radio. The SE also includes the 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine, while the S trim employs the 2.0-li-ter 4-cylinder plant. I often prefer manual transmis-sions, but my test ride came with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tip-tronic and Sport mode, for an additional $1100. The Platinum Gray exterior and Black interior were stan-dard; a cool rear lip spoiler added $375; a sporty ground effects kit with a front va-lance, side sill extensions and rear valance added $1950; and destination charges were $795, for a vehicle-as-tested price of $25,890.

Toyota to expand Kentucky plant

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Ken-tucky approved a tax incen-tive package for Toyota on Wednesday.

Toyota Motor Manufac-turing Kentucky is in the running to produce an un-specified new vehicle mod-el and add 570 permanent full-time workers at its Georgetown plant, accord-ing to details the carmaker provided to state officials to qualify for tax incentives.

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Au-thority approved $146.5 mil-lion in state tax incentives on Wednesday to help with the cost of the proposed $531 million expansion.

The Georgetown plant, which already has 6,100 full-time workers, is com-peting with other Toyota factories for the opportunity to build the new model.
