E2 — The Sentinel at www.cumberlink.com Autos Plus Sunday • September 30, 2012

The silhouette is high-lighted by a wedged roofli-ne and a sweeping bodyside character line that empha-sizes its bold shoulders and its now, rear-wheel drive orientation. The front of the G Sedan is highlighted by its iconic headlight and grille design, which offer a crisp form and high quality feel. Standard fog lights are located in the lower fascia and every G offers standard High Intensity Discharge bi-functional xenon head-lights.

A true midsize, with a sturdy curb weight of 3552

lbs., G25 Journey measures 187.9 inches long, 69.8 inch-es wide and 57.2 inches high on a 112.2-inch wheelbase and offers a ground clear-ance of 5.1 inches.

Smooth and responsive engine

Under hood, the 2.5-li-ter V-6 is responsive and smooth. Mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode, downshift rev-matching, drive and sport mode with adaptive shift control, my test G25 Journey complet-ed a zero-to-60mph sprint in 8 seconds flat en route

to a 16.1-second quarter-mile trek. Off the line, G25 is smooth, and at speed you still get silkiness, but not overwhelming passing pow-er. Speed-sensitive steering is tight and responsive and G25 hugs corners well, even in auto-cross tests, with minimal sway.

EPA rated at 20mpg in city driving and 29mpg on the highway, my tests yielded a mixed-use driving average of 23.3mpg.

Intuitive interiorInside, G25 Journey was

comfortable and well-ap-pointed as outlined above. Its interior environment is

crafted with an upscale demeanor and an intui-tive and pampering de-sign. With seating for five, G25 provides headroom of 40.5 inches in front and 37.7 inches in the rear seats; legroom goes a spacious 43.9 inches in row one and a tight 34.7 for row two and shoulder room of 55.6 and 55.2 inches.

G25 Journey also ad-heres to the manufactur-er’s commitment to safety with Infiniti’s Advanced Air Bag System with dual-stage supplemental front air bags, seat belt sensors and occupant classification sensor, along with front

seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted curtain side impact supplemental air bags for front and rear-seat outboard occupant head protection.

The 2012 Infiniti G se-ries starts at $33,100 for the base sedan; $34,500 for the Journey trim (as was this test drive); $36,100 for the G25x and $36.900 for the base G37. On top of the G37 food chain is the Sport 6MT, which starts at $41,500. My Graph-ite Shadow Journey was upgraded with an $1100 m o o n ro o f ; $ 3 8 5 f ro n t spoiler below the grille;

$425 rear decklid spoiler; $460 Midnight Black grille; $495 LED daytime running lights; $199 interior accent ambient lighting; $295 pre-mium carpeted floor mats; $90 carpeted trunk mat and $50 trunk cargo net. An additional $895 for des-tination and handling was added for a final sticker price of $38,805.

Behind the Wheel

New Audi wagon: Off-road not so much

By ANN M. JOBASSociATEd PrESS

Some seven years af-ter it left American shores, the Audi allroad returns as a more fuel efficient and quicker wagon with proper German road manners and toned-down off-road capa-bility.

The air suspension and heavy weight are gone. So are the thirsty V-6 and V-8.

Instead, the new-for-2013 Audi allroad with standard quattro all-wheel drive is a nicely sized, well-pack-aged and adaptable five-seat wagon with Audi’s styling panache, albeit with plastic cladding around the wheel wells and fenders and a stainless steel skid plate un-derneath.

The interior of the allroad - yes, Audi spells the name all lowercase - is especially well-crafted with tight-fit-ting trim pieces, premium materials and an upscale, business-like environment.

Too bad a rearview camera is optional on this luxury-branded wagon.

Options also can add high-tech features such as Audi’s multi-media interface in-formation system with large, viewable display, Google Earth maps onboard and a Bang & Olufsen sound sys-tem with spaceship-like au-dio components that stay recessed in the top of the dashboard until needed.

Notably, the 2013 allroad, offered only with eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and turbo-charged four-cylinder en-gine, is rated by the federal government at 20 miles per gallon in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway.

This is much higher than the previous American all-road’s best mileage rating of 15/20 mpg for a 2005 mod-el with V-6. A 2005 allroad with V-8 rated only 14/19 mpg.

Still, it’s worth noting that the recommended fuel to-day remains as it was before - premium gasoline - and no diesel engine is offered in the

U.S.-spec, German-built models.

Though the new all-road is based on the wag-on, or Avant, model of Au-di’s smallest sedan, the A4, base allroad pricing is some $3,200 more than that for the 2012 A4 Avant.

Starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, for a base, 211-horsepower, 2013 allroad Premium model is $40,495.

Standard on the base all-road are leather-trimmed seats with eight-way, pow-er-adjustable front seats, panorama sunroof, alumi-num roof rails, premium sound system with 10 speak-ers, Sirius satellite radio with 90-day free subscription, 18-inch wheels, aluminum door sill plates and dash-board trim, single-zone, au-tomatic climate control and halogen headlights, among other things.

Standard safety features include six air bags, antilock brakes, electronic stability control and hydraulic brake assist for emergency stops.

Competitors aren’t sport utility vehicles that Audi of-ficials had targeted for the previous allroad to con-quest.

Rather, the new allroad - even with its slightly higher road height vis-à-vis the A4 and large tires - primar-ily competes against other five-seat, all-wheel drive

wagons.As an example, the current

Volvo XC70 with all-wheel drive, 300-horsepower, tur-bocharged six cylinder and six-speed automatic trans-mission has a starting retail price of $40,995.

Meantime, a new Mer-cedes-Benz E350 wagon with 302-horsepower V-6, seven-speed automatic, Mercedes’ leather-like seat upholstery and all-wheel drive starts at $58,605.

With the return of the all-road to the United States, Audi officials have dropped the A4 Avant from the United States for 2013. Audi dropped its A6 Avant ship-ments to the United States after the 2011 model year.

Thus, Audi buyers es-chewing sedans and want-ing cargo capacity and flex-ible seating from something larger than an A3 hatchback face a choice of allroad or one of Audi’s sport utility vehicles - the Q5 or Q7.

Fans of the hardcore, first-generation allroad, which debuted in 2001, may object to loss of the air suspension in the new model. But this suspension was problematic in early cars.

Original allroad devotees also will notice there is no low-range gearing for rug-ged off-roading.

But few car buyers venture into Rubicon Trail type of territory, and it’s question-able whether the ones who

do on a regular basis would want to go there in an Audi wagon.

That said, the new allroad, whose meaty, 18-inch tires all get power, travels confi-dently on gravel lanes, dirt paths and around off-road obstacles, if driven with care, attention and competency. It handles snowy and rain-slicked streets well, too.

A 2-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 211 horses might not sound impressive in the allroad. But it produces the same 258 foot-pounds of torque that the old allroad’s V-6 did. In-deed, the 258 foot-pounds comes on by just 1,500 rpm and had the test allroad ea-gerly sprinting forward. Zero to 60 miles per hour is a commendable 6.5 seconds.

Passengers in the test car, where power could be forceful on demand, never guessed that the 15.5-foot-long allroad had just a four-cylinder engine. Transmis-sion shifts were smooth.

The 2013 allroad tester was solid and stable on pave-ment and dirt areas, with just a bit of body lean when the car was driven aggres-sively through twisty moun-tain roads. The suspension managed road bumps well while keeping the ride taut and firm.

Illustrating the good car control that the allroad has, the front end of this 3,891-pound vehicle had little “dive” during hard braking.

Electromechanical steer-ing, while a bit lighter than expected, was precise and comfortable.

Seats had a firm, support-ive German character and provided fatigue-free rid-ing. Velour carpeting looked good, and the panorama roof made the interior feel spa-cious.

Folding down the rear seatbacks to expand the 27.6 cubic feet of cargo space to 50.5 cubic feet required us-ing latches at the tops of the seatbacks . The solid, heavy feel to these seatbacks con-veyed a safe, solidly built en-vironment.

Driving Safety

Best fall driving practices

Fall is often associated with such pleasantries as back to school, beauti-ful foliage, a spooky Hal-loween and Thanksgiving feasts. What is often lost and forgotten are the safe-ty hazards associated with the season while out on the roads.

Fifty-six percent of Americans are planning to take a fall road trip, and 51 percent are planning on driving at least 500 miles, according to Han-kook Tire’s latest Quar-terly Index. With all these miles being logged on U.S. highways and streets, it is best to take the proper precautions to ensure the safety of yourself, your family and those on the roads.

Slippery when wetFall foliage is, without a

doubt, a grand sight. But once leaves hit the ground, raking isn’t your only con-cern. Speeding over wet leaves can lead to losing control of your car. In addi-tion, fallen leaves can serve as prime cover for potholes and ditches which can re-sult in flat tires, blowouts, or even more serious structural damage to your vehicle.

School is in session

With young children and teens back at school, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for an increase in pedestrian traffic and school buses that make frequent stops. Hankook’s Gauge Index found that only 37 percent of people pay more attention behind the wheel when school is back in session. With de-creased speed limits in school zones, school bus-es loading and unloading, youth biking to school, and the occasional free-spir-ited daredevils crossing streets at their own discre-tion, the reasons for being attentive during this time abound.

Trick or treatNot paying attention

while driving on Hallow-een can lead to a true fright fest. Forty-four percent of respondents say they

drive more carefully when trick-or-treaters are out on Halloween. With ex-cited kids on a sugar high patrolling the streets in all types of costumes, often in the dark, their safety is a prime concern. In fact, just last year Safe Kids USA released findings that showed on average, twice as many kids are killed while walking on Hallow-een as compared to any other day of the year.

Are you prepared? Now that you are aware

of some of the fall driving hazards, it’s time to prop-erly prepare to hit the road with confidence. How so?

DisconnectIn this day and age more

and more people are hy-per-connected via smart-phones and gadgets. Treat your road trips as a reprieve from the outside world and avoid texting while driv-ing, which is cited as one of the biggest distractions for drivers amongst those polled.

Learn how to change a flat tire

In case you do hit that hidden pothole, being equipped with the knowl-edge of changing a tire can help avoid headaches and put you back on the road in no time. An easy way to learn is to have a friend or family member show you the ropes. But, don’t ex-pect a helping hand from a stranger if stranded. Sixty-one percent of people have not stopped to help a fel-low driver change a tire.

Check your tire pressure

Gone are the 90 degree summer days. Every 10 de-gree drop in air tempera-ture can actually cause a vehicle’s tires to drop up to 2 pounds per square inch (psi) in tire pressure. Im-proper tire pressure can re-sult in increased tread wear and lowered performance, factors that are exacerbat-ed by wet leaves. Proper preparation is as simple as purchasing an air pressure gauge from your local auto repair store.
