Automotive DesignAutomotive is the domain of ‘self propelled, motorised vehicles’. Hence, although the car is dominant, the scope is much wider. It encompasses not only a vast variety of vehicles and transportation modalities. Their reason of being is determined by the mobility systems and services in which they exist.

The automotive industry is one of the most complex industries in terms of structure (bringing together different disciplines), size, and economic entwinement with society. Automotive products display the maximum achievable within the principle of ‘economy of scale’, through the application of knowledge on aesthetics, technology and usability. However, cars also have a negative impact on society as a whole.

How to design mobility means that are meaningful within society that address both individual and collective concerns? How to design meaningful mobility artefacts, which may be new policies and services, new vehicles, and the mobility system that incorporates all these entities?

This autonomous programme provides knowledge on automotive design and technology, and an understanding thereof in specific societal contexts. Because of the complexity of the human mobility domain and the high level of design execution of mobility-means, all knowledge, insights and

experience derived from this minor, is applicable and valuable in other complex systems and domains.

For whomThis minor is developed for university students of the designing faculties, i.e. aerospace, mechanical engineering, architecture and industrial design. In order to participate, students must have acquired at least 80 EC in their bachelor. Students must have some design experience as may be expected after two years in their respected bachelor programmes. They must also have an interest in mobility issues, be academically curious, willing to work in multidisciplinary teams and expect to be pushed out of their comfort zones.

Minors of the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering are open only for students from academic programmes.

The programmeAfter a one-week introduction course, three projects must be executed, that grow in depth, duration, and weight, from automotive styling to the embedding of mobility means in society. Those three projects together are framed by and structured through the design process VIP (Vision in Product design). Together they represent one full walk-through of this process. Necessary knowledge is acquired through lectures and research. Necessary skills are being developed in parallel.

I believe, the most significant thing happening in the global car design industry is that it’s being taken over by the Dutch. Stephen Bayley

• Automotive introduction

In order to become familiar with the mobility domain, the field of automotive design will be introduced through lectures. Next to this, students fulfil an individual assignment as well as a team assignment.

• Automotive styling This first individual project is on the outer-skin of the car, i.e. the restyle of an existing vehicle. How do people perceive and value the styling of a car? This project aims at understanding the complexity of the current state of the styling of automobiles. The goal is to understand automotive design ‘language’ and the ‘level of expertise’ that is required to be able to communicate with and within the field of automotive design. Lectures include aesthetics, branding and aerodynamics.

• Automotive technology and usabilityA team project in which we go ‘under the skin’. How to design vehicles that enable people what they want to do with their vehicle and how to design a configuration between all necessary technical components? Lectures include ergonomics, comfort, vehicle dynamics and power train, structures and package design. The outcome of this project is the design of a full vehicle package for a specific user-group and its reflection on the styling, i.e. the coherence between ‘under the skin’ requirements and styling.

• Automotive mobility context This starts from the idea that every specific context, results in specific end-user behaviour. Ethical choices

on sustainability and inclusion help the designer understand how to take a stand, and which behaviour is appropriate. Newly designed mobility means, bringing together technology, usability and styling, will elicit what the designer wants to accomplish with and for people. The learnings in the previous projects falls into place. Lectures include the taxonomy of human goals, design for emotion, mobility systems (policies, services and products), safety, sustainability and the build environment. But also on innovation strategies and transition management. This final project kicks-off in small teams, researching a future context. After the research phase, each team member individually designs a full vehicle for that specific future context. All vehicles in one team form an integrated mobility system.

• Automotive skillsInvolves sketching and drawing, CAD modelling, prototyping, animation, VR as a design tool and the interaction between all of those. It runs in parallel with the project courses for the duration of the minor. The intensive exercises are related to the projects.

Registration and applicationThis is a selection minor. We aim for a balance between students of the various designing faculties and backgrounds. The procedure is the same for all applicants. In addition to your registration (through e.g. Osiris or International Office), you have to send a brief motivation to: [email protected] can find more information about the additional requirements on the website.
