Automatic Transmissions

Boring Lecture!

Too Much Information!

•Students have all the basic knowledge they need•Last subject I teach this year

Instructor won’t stop droning on!

ZZZ

Page 2: Automatic Transmissions

Automatic TransmissionsAre you ready to discover and explore?!

1. Flipped Classroom: How does that fluid filled thing called a torque converter work?

2. Graphic Organizer: What a strange Rubik’s Cube this planetary gear set is!

3. WebQuest: What sorcery is behind shifting an automatic transmission?

NEW!

1. Flipped Classroom: How does that fluid filled thing called a torque converter work?

• Students will be able to identify torque converter parts, describe its operation, as well as diagnose torque converter failures.

Page 4: Automatic Transmissions

The Task Set Before You:• Watch some TV!*– http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqPQln_gpdc– http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrGGCTkpND4– http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOjHd45kecA– http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2fRCITXn4o

Optional:– http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29-9LRtkGTM

*All TV watching to be done on students own time in the comfort of their house with popcorn.

Page 5: Automatic Transmissions

Now Start Implementing!*• Label a torque converter diagram with part names.• Draw a table showing which parts are similar to clutch

components.• Brainstorm advantages and disadvantages of a torque

converter.• Trace the path of vortex and rotary fluid flow.• Trace fluid flow through the stator at lock up and

freewheeling.• Answer some questions.

*All implementing to be done on classroom time under the guidance of their instructor with popcorn.**All popcorn to be provided by the student.

Page 6: Automatic Transmissions

So... has the mystery been revealed?

• Informal evaluation of student will be through their final question answers.

• Formal evaluation of student will be through their torque converter test.

Get Graphic Organizing!

Include for the 8 different gear set scenarios :• What is held, driven and drive?• Is it forward or reverse?• Is it overdrive or reduction?• Is it usable or not?• Is it the greatest overdrive or the greatest reduction?

Mandatory Bonus Learning: Calculate the actual gear ratios with teeth numbers given & include a drawing representing the size of gears involved.

Page 9: Automatic Transmissions

So... did you solve the puzzle?

• Student’s graphic organizer will be evaluated based on a rubric.

Page 10: Automatic Transmissions

WebQuest: What sorcery is behind shifting an automatic transmission?

• Students will be able to implement the knowledge of automatic transmission shifting they have learned to be able to diagnose and repair an improperly shifting transmission.

Page 11: Automatic Transmissions

Your Quest, Should You Choose to Accept It*:

• Follow the automatic transmission shifting WebQuest– Read the WebQuest and select a group or work alone.– Watch linked videos and webpages to gain understanding of shift

control.– Read description and operation for transmission specific information.– Prepare a graphic organizer of all the ECM and TCM inputs and

outputs involved in shifting.– Answer questions on how this transmission shifts.– Look at DTC list for shift solenoids.– Pick one DTC and explain to class (use rubric for required

information).– Highlight on electrical schematic steps in the diagnostic flow chart.– Go through case study of improperly shifting transmission.

*FYI, if you don’t accept it you will most likely fail the course.

Page 12: Automatic Transmissions

So... did you slay the dragon?

• Informal evaluation through presentation of graphic organizer (rubric for grading)

• Informal evaluation through transmission shifting questions

• Formal evaluation through case study(rubric for grading)– Diagnostic steps– Correct diagnosis– Correct repair
