24. CUKOR, George. TLS signed “George”. Signed retained carbon of his April 15, 1965, thank you to Yul Brynner for a telegram congratulating him on his Oscar win for “My Fair Lady”. He notes “It was hell for darling Audrey, but she behaved like a queen. No surprise to anybody, we all expect it of her. She did us proud.” Although it’s now considered one of her best performances, Hepburn was criticised for her non-singing Eliza Doolittle at the same time Julie Andrews was winning an Oscar for “Mary Poppins”. 34. HUTCHINSON, Leslie. Extremely rare 6x8 signed photo “Hutch, 1933” of the African American cabaret singer and pianist (1900-69) who was intimately associated with Cole Porter, both as a singer and as his lover. In 20s and 30s London, Hutchinson was a pianist and singer of huge renown, at one time considered perhaps the best in the world, and left a legacy of remarkable recordings of songs by Porter as well as Rodgers and Hart and Ray Henderson. His rumored paramours also included Tallulah Bankhead, Ivor Novello, Merle Oberon and Edwina Mountbatten, a liaison which ultimately derailed his career in his adopted country – the tabloid scandal resulted in his ostracization by society and the media. (This affair was fictionally portrayed in Downton Abbey.) This is the only example we’ve seen of this great performer who is too little known today……………..$225.00

Signed with his real name, Kenneth Millar, to Robert Kirsch of the LA Times. “I am currently doing a film story for and with Alexander Mackendrick, the director…Sandy picked out for his special approval and delight that scene in Black Money which you found dull. But that’s what makes horse races, as Alfred Knopf is always telling me. Fortunately for me, the reviews in general are the best I’ve ever had, and so are the sales….” (Ironically, despite the bad review mentioned in the letter, in 1982 MacDonald won the LA Times’ prestigious Robert Kirsch Award for Lifetime Achievement.)………………………………….$500.00

60. SPILLANE, Mickey. Terrific 1p TLS signed “Mickey” to journalist and broadcaster Hy Gardner, undated, but c.1960. (Gardner would play himself in Spillane’s 1963 “The Girl Hunters.”) “Since Cuba has tied in so close with Commie Russia and China the narcotic import has increased with Cuba the jumping off point and the garlic brotherhood in Italy cut off. It’s so serious in Europe that a big personality formerly deported from the U.S. is due in Cuba to parlay with Castro and rumor has it (Rumor hell, this is classified) that it will be Lucky himself…I’m going to follow it up some, but out of gunshot range.” This letter is vintage Spillane: his Mike Hammer mysteries often had Cold War themes. But in light of the soon-to-happen Kennedy assassination with reputed Mob ties and a nexus from Russia to Cuba, there is more than a whiff of real mystery here. Extremely rare, as a furor arose with Cohan’s calling the American flag a “rag” and every sheet was immediately taken off the market and destroyed with only a handful surviving. This is only the third copy we’ve had in 45 years of selling. The song was quickly reissued as “You’re A Grand Old Flag”. Edges a bit frayed and worn, owner signature on cover, a superior copy……………………………..……$250.00
