It is where politicians usually come to vote.

A politician is a person who makes and votes on laws.

People choose politicians by voting.

This time most of the people in the room were not all politicians.

This time they were people with disabilities and people from disability organisations.

A developing country is a country that is not yet very rich.

In these countries life can be very difficult for people with disabilities.

The staff and some members from Autism-Europe were at the event.

Autism-Europe’s President and Vice-President both gave a short speech.

11

She also said that countries must “implement” the laws to support people with disabilities.

This means that European countries need to make sure everyone follows these laws.

This means the laws must really make people’s lives better.

He is from Italy.

Pietro explained that in lots of countries it is difficult to get an autism diagnosis. He explained that this should be made easier.

An “autism diagnosis” is when a doctor or other health person says that someone is autistic.

Page 13: Autism- · 2019. 8. 4. · Johan Cappaert. Johan is autistic. Johan works at the European Parliament. 27 He works with computers. He explained to people at the event how it can feel

13

Having a diagnosis means you can show other people that you are autistic.

This way an autistic person can ask for support.

Pietro also said that autistic people should have more say when companies make medicine for autistic people.

When people ask politicians questions, they do not give a clear answer.

There are many employees in the Council of the EU.

These employees assist the decision-makers.
