I Corinthians 1:18 - 2:5 - Scott Johnson -
Authority Rests Upon His Shoulders
As a typical young child, I was always moving about, constantly on the go, running, falling, and getting up to go again. I never stopped. I can remember falling occasionally and skinning my knees. Whenever I did, often a tear would come to my eye and if it really hurt I would wail. Then my dear mother would come to me, pick me up, and ask, “Where does it hurt?” I would sadly reply, “Everywhere!”
Since last Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris, my heart has been so heavy. The attacks at six locations, including a concert hall, the Stade de France, and at least two restaurants, killed more than 130 people. Many more seriously injured now struggle to hold on to their precious lives.
I ask the question, “Where does it hurt?” And from all over the world I hear sadly the reply, “Everywhere!” It hurts everywhere: France, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Pakistan, Africa, Egypt, Libya, Mexico, Korea, the United States, and many more places around the world.
Lives matter. All lives matter. Hear me, all lives matter! I don’t how we are going to get out of this mess. Surely, we have lost our way. In our technological age when we find it so easy to be connected because of cell phones, iPads, and computers, we are so disconnected. We are scattered. We are like sheep who have gone astray. I don’t know how we are going to get out of this mess.
I do know this: For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this (Isaiah 9:6-7).
Let us not harden our hearts. Let us not close our hearts to each other or to God. Let us not become cynical. Let us be united all over the world as God’s people, and let us share love for each other, especially for children around the globe.
There is so much darkness in our world today. May the Light of Jesus Christ permeate this
darkness that seems to prevail. Come, Lord Jesus, come!
- B. Mike Alexander, Jr.

A Blue Christmas Service For many in our church and community, there is very little “Ho, Ho, Ho” in their holiday season. Persons who have lost a loved one, those dealing with relationship issues, suffering a health crisis or financial woes may find it difficult to feel joy at Christmastime.
A Blue Christmas service for those needing comfort will be held in the Belin sanctuary.
Blue Christmas Service: Sunday, December 20, 6 PM
Special music and liturgy will be offered and Belin Stephen Ministers will be in attendance to offer hope and healing. We hope this service will make this time of year a little brighter.
Christmas Eve Worship and Christmas Reminders Christmas Eve worship services take place on Thursday, December 24:
4 PM “Family Christmas” with the Harbor worship singers and candle lighting
6 PM Traditional service with the Belin Chancel Choir and candle lighting
11 PM Traditional service with communion and candle lighting
A nursery for young children will be provided at 4 PM and 6 PM only. As always, we expect Christmas Eve services to be well attended with overflow seating in the narthex. Please arrive early to ensure optimum seating. A few reserved seats will be held for ushers.
Our Christmas Eve offering this year (unless you designate otherwise) will be split between Belin’s Backpack Mission and Imagine No Malaria in an effort to fight malaria, a preventable and curable disease (info at imaginenomalaria.org).
The church office and Family Life Center (FLC) will be closed December 24-25 and will close at 2 PM on Thursday, December 31. The Belin Creative Learning Center (BCLC) will be closed the week of Christmas, December 21-25.
A Word of Caution Please remember while on church property, lock your vehicles at all times and do not leave any valuables in sight. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure (Ben Franklin).

Christian Programs and Studies
Holiday Break for SHINE Time The Education Team has determined that the Sunday after Thanksgiving is a special time during which we would like to encourage our children and teachers to worship with their families. Therefore, we will not have SHINE Time or Sunday school for children on Sunday, November 29. There will be a nursery for infants and toddlers. Youth and adult Sunday school (6th grade and older) will take place as usual (check with your class leader).
“The Not-So-Silent Night” Children’s Christmas Pageant - Wednesday, December 16, 6:30 PM in the Family Life Center You are invited to attend an evening of good food and a special Christmas program presented by the children of Belin Memorial, grades K-5. The evening includes a special Christmas Gathering dinner catered by Inlet Affairs ($1 up-charge for the meal), served from 5 PM to 6:15 PM, followed by the “Not-So-Silent Night.” Make your reservations for dinner online or by contacting Brandy Streett, 843.357.5180, to assure you will have a seat!
Rediscovering Our Spiritual Gifts This five-week study led by Bill Wening will begin on January 6 in the Family Life Center at 6 PM. This study builds up the body of Christ through gifts of the Spirit. It identifies 30 spiritual gifts and shows their value for the church. You may register by contacting Jane Sparks at 843.357.5185 or [email protected].
Growing Kids God’s Way (by Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo)
Do you wish your kids obeyed you right away, all the way, and the cheerful way…the FIRST time you gave an instruction? What parent doesn’t want that from their child? But it is not a dream or something too impossible to obtain. Immediate, complete, and cheerful obedience is how God designed us to respond and He gives us examples and instructions for this type of obedience in His Word. If you would like to learn how to raise your children the way God intended, join us for the parenting course titled “Growing Kids God’s Way” by Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo. This 17-week course will give you the tools you need to reach the heart of your child through God’s Word. While 17 weeks may seem like a long commitment, wouldn’t it be worth the investment of your time to get your child to respond with a prompt and cheerful “Yes, Ma’am!” or “Yes, Sir!” to your instructions the first time you give them?
The class begins January 10, 4 - 6 PM in Family Life Center. If needed, childcare will be provided by safe sanctuary certified staff for a nominal fee. Workbooks
are $20 each and will be available for purchase at the first class. It is recommended that each parent have his or her own workbook. The class is video driven and will be facilitated by Bob and Jennifer Hohman. To register, please contact Jennifer Hohman at [email protected] or 270.791.0210.
Brighten Worship with Flowers
If you wish to reserve a date in 2016 to donate flowers in the chancel or narthex, please contact Becky in the church office, 843.651.5099 or [email protected]. Flower donations may be made in memory or in honor of someone special or to commemorate a special occasion in your life or the life of the church! If you don’t wish to pick up your flowers after the 11 AM worship service, Belin’s Nurture Team will deliver them to those in our congregation who are in need of care or concern.
Operation Christmas Child Update
500 Christmas Child shoeboxes were delivered to Surfside United Methodist Church (collection spot) on Monday, November 16! Thank you to Belin Memorial’s Mission Team, our Youth Group, and the Boy Scouts for use of their trailer. Much appreciation is also extended to all who filled a box for this this mission project.
