Warm-Up

Activity: An alien comes to Earth. The alien hands you a computer tablet with these words:

Must find out how to construct a PB and J sandwich.

What is “sandwich”? Punch in way to construct.

You plan ahead. You think about a short introduction in which you explain what a sandwich is.

Then you think about your instruction steps. You will want a step on ingredients and utensils

needed. You will need to discuss amounts and what you mean by spreading.

You are all set to punch in the introduction and the steps when you see that there is no e on the

alien’s computer tablet! You have to write everything down without using the letter e! You try your

best, and here’s what you end up with:

Warm-UpIdeas and Content

Newspapers are filled with articles, and those articles must be filled with facts. People want to know what is happening around the world. They want the answers to the questions “Who?,” “What?,” “When?,” “Where?,” and “How?” about current events.

The title of an article is called a headline. A headline sums up the story’s action. It should catch the interest of a reader. Important articles also have bylines. The byline lists the author’s name.

Activity: Use the notes below to write an article. Include a headline and your byline.

Imagine that someone sees what appears to be a log or bunch of logs floating in a river. This person gets an unexpected surprise when the log or logs turn out to be hippos!

Activity: Write a story with the plot listed above. Use what you know about hippos to add details to your story.

Warm-Up

A glass of water is filled up to the halfway mark. Is the glass half full or half empty? An optimist looks on the bright side and says the glass is half full. A pessimist expects the worst and says the glass is half empty. Both descriptions are accurate, but the way they are worded may change the way you feel.

Activity: Use at least two complete sentences to describe how an optimist and a pessimist might see the same event. Your answers can be realistic or fictional and silly.

Example: getting sick with the flu

• Optimist: I have a chance to lie in bed and catch up on my reading. In addition, I am developing antibodies that will help me fight off the flu when I am older!

• Pessimist: There’s probably a surprise guest speaker today, and here I am stuck in bed feeling more beat up than the bottom of an old shoe. I’ll never get well!

What do you know about hippopotamuses? Can a hippo swim? Is a hippo a kind of horse? You can research hippos in books or on the Internet using a search engine. Read the following two sources of information about hippos.

The name hippopotamus comes from an ancient Greek word that means “river horse.” Hippos do spend most of their time in rivers, but they aren’t horses. Their closest living relative may be a pig or a whale.

Hippos are too dense to swim or float. They move underwater by pushing off the river bottom and bounding or walking in a slow-motion gallop. A hippo’s eyes, ears, and nostrils are all on top of its head. A hippo can close its nostrils, and it can press its ears flat against its head.

Hippos don’t sweat like we do. Instead, they have “blood sweat.” Blood sweat is sticky pink oil that oozes from their pores. The oil creates a mucous that keeps the hippo’s skin moist. The mucous also protects it from sunburn and may help cuts from getting infected.
