Everyone is Welcome to attend the 7th Annual Recognition Ceremony.
Wednesday May 7th, Tobin Hall at 16:30
Paula A. Hindle, RN,
MSN, MBA
Vice President of
Nursing Strategy and
Professional Practice
In the next four weeks, we will again celebrate Nurses’ Week. I want to thank the
Magnet Ambassadors for their hard work in planning the festivities. I am sure you will
enjoy all the activities.
Nurses’ Week for me is a time to reflect on why I became a nurse and what
drew me to this profession. I decided to become a nurse after an ice skating accident
as an adolescent. I was cared for by a nurse who broke some rules on the pediatric unit
to provide me with activities to meet my needs. She made a difference at a very diffi-
cult time in my life. I wanted to be able to do the same.
As a new graduate, I worked at a community hospital in Cambridge, MA.
Then I met a woman who was 31 years old with aplastic anemia. Over four months, I
got to know her and her husband very closely. Unfortunately, she did not respond to
any of the therapies. I was with her when she passed. I knew from the patient and her
family, I had made a difference. That is what nursing is all about.
I, like two of my nursing heroes, Florence Nightingale and Clara Barton, see
nursing as a calling. Florence Nightingale, at the age of 17, felt herself called by God
for some unidentified greater cause. At the age of 25, she decided to become a nurse.
Florence wrote in Advice to Nursing Students (1873), “Nursing is most said to be a
high calling, an honorable calling.”
Clara Barton also had a strong drive to give back. Her first experiences in car-
ing for others occurred when her brother fell from the roof of their home. After that,
she talked with her father before his death about the Civil War. He convinced her to
help soldiers. In 1862, she gained permission to work on the front lines caring for sol-
diers. Her most harrowing experience came from a gunshot that tore the sleeve of her
dress and killed the young soldier she was ministering. She became known as the
“Angel of the Battlefield.”
After that experience, she had become familiar with the Red Cross in Geneva,
Switzerland. The purpose of the organization was to provide relief voluntarily on a
neutral basis. On return to the United States, she worked with President Chester Ar-
thur to establish the American Red Cross. Her vision was that this group would sup-
port people suffering from more than war but also natural disasters. She resigned as
president of the American Red Cross at the age of 80.
Clearly, we can see the strong calling both of these nurses had.
What called you to nursing? Are you still fulfilling your drive to care for oth-
ers? I believe you do by the great care you provide each day to our patients and their
families. Thank you for all that you do.

The ways that we leave heart prints can be
summed up in the word, love. In his First Letter to
Corinthians, St. Paul describes love. He writes of a
love that touches hearts. How might we describe this
love as companions of the sick and dying? We might
say: We leave heart prints by dealing compassionately
with others. We leave heart prints by being under-
standing. By being patient and kind. By showing con-
cern. By listening. By easing another’s anxiety. All
are ways to touch hearts.
So, in all of our dealings with others, let us
leave heart prints. And if someone should say: “I felt
your touch,” that might be miracle enough.
Heart Prints Anonymous
We leave fingerprints on whatever our hands
touch. On doors, on bed rails, on tray tables. As we
touch, so do we leave our identity.
Each day we have the wonderful opportunity to
leave prints on the hearts of those we visit. To touch the
hearts of others and to inspire them with the love of
God is the most humane act we can perform, and one
God expects of us.
Discussion:
Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote in one of her
famous poems: “How do I love thee? Let me count the
ways.” We might ask: “How do we touch hearts?
There are many ways!”

Six months have passed since the staff entered into their new role at Loy-ola. These months have been a whirlwind. You oriented on many differ-ent units. When you came together in January, you worked together and found strength in each other. I have watched some of the insecurities grow into confidence. You learned quickly and placed your patients first. You bring energy and excitement to nursing. You are a wonderful staff and I have had the privilege of being your manager. Thank you Peggy Downing

Shared Governance Updates
Guided by compassion and committed to excellence. That is where you will find Pediatric and Pediatric Critical Care Nurses
Leading the Way. There is no better place to be a nurse than the Ronald McDonald Children’s Hospital of Loyola University
Medical Center. We are innovating in nursing practice and impacting the lives of our patients everywhere that nursing care is
delivered. As a nurse for over 37 years, I am tremendously proud of the extensive contributions my colleagues here are making
to patient care. We share a deep personal commitment to advancing the role of nurses throughout our children’s hospital, as
individuals and as a Magnet-designated institution striving continuously for the highest standards of our profession. I work
with Courageous Nurses without question; innovation is needed in children’s health care and health care systems globally. It is
through their courage that makes change possible. Rosabeth Moss Kantor in a recent Harvard Business Review article wrote
that ” moral courage enables people to stand up for principle rather than stand on the sidelines.” Nurses heal with science
and compassion for each patient, every time. No other group is part of a patient’s journey at each step of the way. The oppor-
tunity we have to make a difference inspires me every day. It is with great respect and admiration that I wish all of my Nursing
colleagues in the Ronald McDonald Children’s Hospital of Loyola University Medical Center a wonderful Nurses Week 2014.
