Teamwork - Taking action as a group to achieve a common goal.

Anne Kennedy’s birthday is on July 25th.

Anne Kennedy's favorite subjects have always been animals, and she has loved working on the award-winning Miss Fox series. In the fourth grade she created tiny animal drawings and sold them for a fewcents from a box in her desk at school.

Through the years she concentrated on music and acting, and was originally a music teacher, but she hasbeen an author and illustrator for twenty-eight years. Anne is a self-taught artist, but credits her talent toher genes, as her grandfather and great-grandfather, Robert and Josef Vittur, were accomplished muralistswho decorated many churches with gorgeous frescoes of angels and saints. As the talent filtered downthrough the generations, she says it came out on her paper as "squirrels in pants.”

In her spare time she enjoys riding horses, eating cookies, and traveling. She and her husband, Jack, livein Ohio with their rescued dog, Banjo.

The first Magic Tree House book was published in 1992, introducing the world to Jack and Annie, a brother and sister whodiscover a magical tree house filled withbooks. With the help of their friends from the kingdom of Camelot, they use researchbooks, riddles, codes, and courage to solveproblems, complete missions, and help thosein need.

In 2000, the first two Magic Tree House Fact Trackers (originally known as ResearchGuides) came out, co-written by Mary PopeOsborne and her husband, Will Osborne. These nonfiction companions to the MagicTree House books give readers a fun and easy way to find out more about their favorite places, time periods, and subjects. After the first eight titles, Mary’s sister, Natalie Pope Boyce, came on board to co-author with Mary.

The Magic Tree House books are number oneNew York Times bestsellers. With more thanseventy million copies sold in North Americaalone, they have been translated into manylanguages and are available in more than thirty countries around the world.

Good Character Has Two Big PartsPerformance Character –– all the virtues such as effort,

diligence, positive attitude, and perseverance thathelp us do our best work.

Moral Character –– all the virtues such as honesty, respect, fairness, and caring that help us be our bestin relationships.

We Will Have The Most Success In TeachingAny Given Virtue If We Use The 7 E’s.

First-grade teacher Jan Gorman shows how to use the7 E’s to unlock the character-building power of children’s literature. She teaches a virtue a week, beginning with caring. She gathers her students in a circle and elicits their thoughts about the following questions, making a visual web of their responses:

• What is caring?• Why is it important?• How can each of us show caring? In our classroom?

Our school? Our families?

She then reads a picture book that exemplifies thetheme of caring: Peter Golenbock’s Teammates. It tellsthe story of how Brooklyn Dodgers Captain Pee WeeReese stood by Jackie Robinson when Jackie facedracism, even from some of his teammates, for being thefirst black man to play major league baseball. After thestory, the teacher conducts a discussion, asking: “Whoin the story showed caring? Who did not show caring?”

Then she says, “I want you to remember this story andmake it your goal to show caring toward each otherduring the rest of the day.” When a child behaves incaring way, she publicly compliments that child. If achild behaves in an unkind way, she gently correctsthat student privately: “Did that behavior show caring?Remember our story. . . remember our discussion.”

On each subsequent day of the week, she reads a different children’s book about caring, followed by another class discussion. She repeats her challenge tochildren to act in a caring way and again looks foropportunities to compliment or correct their behavior.

“By the end of the week,” she says, “caring has been established as an expectation in my classroom.” During the following weeks, she repeats this processwith different virtues such as courtesy, courage, and perseverance.
