The Children Act 1989 definition of a Welfare checklist

“The ascertainable wishes and feelings of a child concerned (considered in the light of his age and understanding) ;their physical , emotional and educational needs, and the likely effect on them of any changes in circumstances”


W.A.G. 7 Core Aims

opportunities; Enjoy the best possible health and are free from abuse, victimisation

and exploitation; Have access to play, leisure, sporting and cultural activities; Are Listened to, treated with respect, and have their Race and

Children’s Rights

U.N Convention on the Rights of Children- Article 12 “ Children have the Right to say what they think should happen, when adults are making decisions that effect them, and to have their opinions taken into account.”

The Children and young people panel –The Story so far………….

The Panel was set up 7 years ago Set up by Children and Young People who

were coming into Hospital on a regular basis, facilitated by Liaison Nurse.

Aims of Panel…….to give Children and Young People in Hospital the opportunity to get their voices heard on issues that effect them.


The story so far………

Commitment of facilitator was to “LISTEN” to what Children were saying about Issues affecting them in Hospital, then support Children to Raise those Issues through Management structure.

The opportunity to participate and be listened to is a fundamental right under the United Nations Convention Rights of the Child.

Year 7&8 during Assembly to inform about the Forum and encourage membership.

Web Site for Children and Young People, designed specifically for <5, 5-11,11-18 with age appropriate Health Information.

Work with Local Drama Group to develop film – Pre operative information

Trust P.P.I Endorsement for future developments


The Children and Young People Panel

The Children’s panel works to fulfil Children’s Rights by;

Ensuring that the voice of Children in Hospital is heard, Enabling children to take part in decisions that effect them

in Hospital Promoting the Rights of Children to have their say, to

respect and value their opinions, and be taken seriously. Participation ,Protection and Provision of Rights.

Making sure we take the patient’s, carer’s, relative’s view into consideration.

We want your help to re-design the Questionnaire for Young People in Hospital. It needs to be RELEVANT, EASY TO UNDERSTAND, IMPORTANT, EASY TO COMPLETE!
