Presidents Report January 2020
I would like to wish all members and partners Happy New Year
from Dianne and myself.
I contacted our new member Lion Sheryl Keppler after our
last
meeting and welcome Sheryl to our Lions club, she told me
she
was in Victoria till January, then going to Japan for 3 Months
to
help her daughter settled in over there,
After she gets back Sheryl is heading to Queensland.
We were all packed up to leave on the 18th of December with our
caravan to Lake
Talbot 1500k into NSW area.
Things changed on the 17th with Dianne having trouble breathing,
so I called the
Ambulance and she was taken To Sunshine Coast University
Hospital .
When she was in emergency, they checked her out and found she
had pneumonia
and lots of fluid on her lungs and then on Wednesday night she
took a bad attack
and had doctors and nurses everywhere to do everything they had
to so she could
breath.
Thursday she was transferred to respiratory ward. While trying
to clear her lungs
they also found there was stress on the heart so she also comes
under cardiac,
Then I found out she was transferred to cardiac ward where I saw
her on the
Thursday and Dianne didn’t look the best as they were trying to
get fluid off her lungs
so they could do angiogram, to check to see how heart was.
So that was done just before Xmas Day and the found blockage on
main artery but
she still had some rattles in her chest.
Then Xmas Eve her chest was all clear and they good go ahead
after Xmas Day
Dianne was told on Thursday that it would be done on Friday.
They clear her artery
and put in 3 stents and she should be home in a couple of
days.
Just after 5pm I received a ring from the nurse at the hospital
to Say Dianne in
recovery room and I can speak to her for a few minutes and
Dianne sounded so
chirpy and was eating a Sammie as she was so hungry so just have
to wait if she
comes home Saturday or Sunday.
It was great to get a call from Dianne later Saturday morning
that she was coming
home this afternoon.
Now Dianne on the mend from her heart attack and having her
stents in she is
home and we can carry on with our lives and a change in
lifestyle for Dianne
It’s terrible about all the fires in all the states and over
1700 homes lost and people
being killed with these hot temperatures and heavy winds in
different states.
If any of our members are in those area’s they could help the
Lions Clubs if they
need help.

. Time for my December report.
We left Brisbane 21st of December heading to Queenstown, we were
a minute
from landing in Queenstown and it was so windy there the pilot
diverted us back
to Christchurch where we had to stay the night then got a flight
on Saturday
morning to Invercargill.
Where most my family live went and visit my sister and brother
in-law on the
Saturday and after that went and seen my Mum and my sister
Margaret.
On Thursday went to Sterling Point that down at Bluff as far as
you can go then
we went for a ride up bluff hill to the top it was nice clear
day so you could see
all around.
In the Afternoon caught up with Past Council Chairmen Kevin Wall
who is a
member of Invercargill Host Lions Club that I use to be a
member’s years ago
we had a great chat and we exchange banners from each club and
Dianne will
put the photo in the bulletin.
On Thursday we went and seen Past District Governor Diane
Stewart who is a
member of Waikiwi Lions Club and exchange banners and that photo
will go into
the bulletin as well.
It’s now Friday and we leave Invercargill and head to Queenstown
to catch our
plane back to Brisbane.
It’s terrible about all these fires that have been started by
people and some
natural environment
And amount of homes losses and business and people.

I would like to wish all our members and partners a Happy Xmas
and New Year
and very safe travelling if you are travelling if not travelling
stay safe and enjoy
the festival seasons.

Secretary Report January 2020
January is the month where we begin the preparations for the
Election
of the Officers for the next Lions Year. The schedule for this
is as
follows:
Nominations Process for Club Officers 2020-2021
1. Agenda January 13th, 2018 Meeting to set out timelines
2. 1st Nomination Committee Meeting to be held January 27th,
2020
3. Nomination Committee Nominations to be sent to Members on
January
28th, 2020
4. Members to have further Nominations back to the Secretary
February 6th,
2020
5. 2nd Nominations Committee to meet February 7th, 2020 to put
all
Nomination together ready for the Nominations Meeting February
10th, 2020
6. For Voting at the March 9th Meeting 2020
The Standard Form Lions Club Constitution and By Laws defines
the procedure for
the election of the officers of a Lions Club.
Nominations Committee: The Standard Form Constitution requires
the Club President to appoint a Nominations Committee. The Club
President is responsible for the appointment of a Nominations
Committee during December/January of each year. The Committee
should comprise a small number of experiences Lions, preferably
under the chairmanship of a past President. The task of the
Committee is to select at least one member of the Club to stand for
each of the vacant positions for the forthcoming year-and to ensure
they are willing and able to take on the position for which they
are to be nominated. If necessary, the committee must encourage
newer members to stand for office. At the time of appointment of
the committee it may be helpful to circulate each member of the
Club requesting their preference for Club office during the
forthcoming year, and have members return those preferences to the
Chairman of the Nominations Committee. A clear distinction should
be made between “Club Office’ as defined by the Club Constitution
and appointments that are the prerogative of the Club President
following his/her formal election-the nomination committee should
only deal with elected positions. The committee must ensure that
newer members receive adequate consideration and resist the
temptation to renominate existing officers because ‘they know the
job’. Election Procedure-Nominations Meeting The Club Secretary
must give ten days’ notice of the venue, date and time of the
Nominations Meeting to each paid up member. It is strongly
recommended that such notice should include a reminder that any
paid-up members is entitled to submit
-
further nominations for any of the elected positions subject to
those nominated agreeing to serve; together with a list of those
members nominated by the committee. The nominations committee
should not be seen as controlling the appointment to the office
bearers for the coming year and at all stages it should be made
clear to Club members that alternative nominations are welcome at
the Nominations Meeting. The task of the Committee is solely to
ensure that a full list of suitable nominations for all elected
positions is available at the Nominations meeting. Notification of
Elected Officers Following the election meeting, the Club Secretary
must immediately notify the elected officers for the ensuing Lion
year commencing upon 1st July to the Cabinet secretary.

Nominations Process
It is always a great pleasure to welcome a transferring member
into our Lions Club
and in December Lion Sheryl Keppler transferred in. Sheryl is
currently travelling in
her Caravan around Australia and is also planning an extended
trip to Japan.
New Member Inducted into the Lions Family
In December 2019 a new member was Inducted into Lions. This new
Member was
Emma-Lee Knight and she was inducted into the Port Macquarie
Tacking Point Lions
Club. Well Done Emma-Lee! Emma receiving her Lions Lapel
Pin.
Now this is not so unusual you would say, well it is a little
bit unusual as Emma-Lee
is the fiancée of a member of Australian Online & Travellers
Lions Club, our Techno
Wizard and IT Officer Lion Andrew Payne.

The induction took place in December 2019 on the Christmas Party
River Cruise for
the Tacking Point Lions Club.

and who has served 10
years as a Lion himself)
He said that since Lion
Emma-Lee joined Lions
he has never worked so
hard.
A very “Happy Lion”
Emma-Lee is looking
forward to the
challenges that being a
young enthusiastic Lion brings.
Lion Emma-Lee has a long (for one so young) and successful
history in service work
as she was a member of the Rotaract Club University of Canberra
and whilst a
member was awarded the highest award an individual Rotarian can
receive a “Paul
Harris Fellow” the “Service Above Self Award”.

CHRISTMAS ON THE HIGH SEA
Christmas 2018 and it was decided by our family to have
Christmas at sea, each
person to make their own booking. However as the time went by
they gradually
pulled out leaving Hazel & I and our youngest grandchild
Ruby as the only
contenders. It was our year to have our 10 year old as both
parents were rostered on
in their respective occupations. So we booked for the three of
us.
Due to the fact that our eldest son had relocated to the South
Coast we had nowhere
to leave our car in Sydney and as we all know Sydney is the most
expensive place in
the world for long term parking. So our adventure started by
booking on Rail Link.
Our commendation goes to the State Government for this excellent
service from the
Country to the City. We were picked up by taxi from home and
delivered to our
Coach Station in Grenfell where we departed to Lithgow for our
nearest rail link. Prior
to our departure we were advised by Rail Link that the track
from Penrith to Lithgow
would be closed on our return and buses would be available in
the place of the
trains. We arrived at Lithgow and were soon on the train into
Sydney Central Station,
it was an all stations train to Penrith and then a limited
stopping into Sydney. The
trip was spoilt from a scenery point of view by the smoke from
the bush fires coming
both from Gosper Mountain and the Grose Valley; it was very
thick and caused a lot
of coughing in the train amongst the passengers.
Arriving at Central we took a taxi to White Bay Terminal to
embark on the PO ship
the “Pacific Explorer”. To our surprise the formalities for
boarding had been
dramatically improved from previous times we had travelled on
this line and in next
to no time we were on board and checking out our cabin armed
with our photo
identity key and money pass combined. So we went to the
Waterfront Restaurant for
a meal whilst we waited for our bags to reach our cabin.
After lunch we took Ruby on a tour of the ship to have a look at
all the fun things she
could do. We sailed at 4pm and had a noisy party as we went
under the Sydney
Harbour Bridge, past the Opera House and out the Heads to the
open sea. The
smoke from the bush fires did not seem to faze anybody as they
partied on.
We joined Ruby in the Kid’s Club for 10-13 year olds and from
that time on we only
saw her at meal times and with us around the islands. P & O
did a marvellous job of
entertaining all youngsters in their various age categories.
This service provided by P
& O was free, including the materials for various projects
they were involved in.
The second and third days were spent at sea and there was an
enormous amount of
things to get involved in or watch. Hazel tried out the bingo
but had no luck. I enjoyed
the eating side with 3 meals a day including my favourite “Big
Breakfast”, really
pigged out. We had a choice of many restaurants and enjoyed all
types of food; the
only restaurant we were not happy with was the Asian
Specialities. The different
Asian countries food offered in set menus did not blend well
together which was
disappointing. Ruby enjoyed “The Pantry” where she could go and
get her own food,
especially breakfast when she could order eggs with runny
yolks.
We disembarked on the 4th day on to The Isle of Pines.
Disembarkation on the ships
tenders was a real adventure for Ruby and she was full of
questions as to
procedures. We did not worry about side trips as we had been
there before, however
Ruby wanted to go for a swim and try to find a turtle to swim
with but unfortunately
-
none of them came out to play. Hunger set in and Ruby was not
too enamoured by
the local natives cooking crabs and crays on grotty old oil
drums so it was back to
the ship for a feed and then back onto the big slippery dips for
the rest of the day.
Hazel & I took in a trivia session but found we were not up
to date with the music.
We would have been Ok with 60/70’s music.
The 5th day we awoke to a strange phenomenon in the sky. It was
rain!! We had not
seen this watery substance for many months. We had reached the
island of Mare
and we disembarked at the ferry terminal. Here we were met by
the local choir who
serenaded us as we joined buses to be transported to the local
beaches. By the time
we reached our destination it had stopped raining and Ruby went
for a swim, trying
to find that elusive turtle. She saw some kids making a lot of
noise and swam over
and passed a great big sea snake. This was the reason for the
kerfuffle being
caused by the other kids. The rain returned and so back to the
boat after buying
some souvenirs (Made in China of course).
The rain had gone when we got up the next morning which was
great as it was the
best island of the trip, Mystery Island. This is an uninhabited
island where the
Americans had put in a runway during WW11. This runway is still
in use as could be
seen when an Air Vanuatu plane came in whilst we were there.
Ruby had a ton of
fun when we were there being put in the Cannibal Pot, hair
braiding
and Lizards crawling all over her, souvenir hunting galore,
along with exploring some
old settler’s cottages. There was no food available so we
returned to the ship for
lunch and for on-board entertainment.
Our next port of call was Noumea. We took a side trip on a
Tschou Train with an
English speaking guide and found out some of the history of the
place. However I did
not feel it was a place I would like to return to in the future
as it was very similar to
other places in the world with no aura about it. The tugboat
entry and exit to the
berth was very interesting with so many manoeuvres to get our
boat correctly
positioned.

The next 3 days were cruising back to Sydney during which we had
Christmas
Festivities with an excellent a la carte meal. Santa turned up
and presented every
child on board with a present, he had many of his elves in
attendance and it was
easy to see the happiness in the young ones eyes.
The sad day happened when we had to leave the ship. Ruby was in
tears as she
had met so many new friends on board. Grandpa was in trouble as
he had not
booked the trip for New Year and the fireworks as well.
The journey home was arduous to say the least. There had been so
many stories of
the fires on board that we decided not to hang around in Sydney.
We left the ship
boarding the coach to Central Station. We immediately got a
train to Penrith and a
bus to Lithgow. Here we had to wait for 5 hours as there was
only one bus home.
Time to leave and another wait for an hour as one of the
passengers was late, they
were not sure where he was as he did not follow instructions.
When he still had not
arrived at Lithgow the coach left, eventually arriving back at
Grenfell at 11.45pm.
