ABOUT US
he Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is an independent organisation which
promotes the objective study of international affairs. It has no political biases and hears
all views. Founded in 1925, it was established as a federal organisation in 1933. The
Institute has its national headquarters at Stephen House in Canberra, and branches in all
states and territories. Like its sister Institutes in New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and India, it
is affiliated with the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, London.
The AIIA provides a forum for discussion and research on subjects of topical and continuing
interest through meetings, conferences and seminars addressed by distinguished specialists
and public figures. Over the years these meetings have contributed much to informing public
opinion on international affairs and have assisted the development of the Australian Diplomatic
Service and the study of international issues in Australia.
The AIIA Victoria (AIIAV) is housed in Dyason House, named after E.C. Dyason, a prominent past
member and one of its most generous benefactors.
Membership is open to any individuals who are Australian residents, to corporate bodies, to
diplomatic representatives, schools and students.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I have pleasure in presenting my
first report as President of the
AIIAV.
We are a membership based,
apolitical volunteer organisation.
Thus my first task is to thank all
those who have given their time and
service to this organisation over the
past year. In particular I would like
to thank Laurence Wade, our
immediate past President. I would like to
thank the invaluable work carried out by all
Committees of the AIIA. Putting it bluntly, we
have had a terrific year. The number of
events we have done is at record levels, the
quality of speakers has been fantastic and
the involvement of the Members has been
absolutely wonderful. So my thanks go to all
the Volunteers, Interns and indeed all the
Members who have participated in various
events throughout the year.
Additionally, I would like to thank our past
Vice Presidents Cate Pickett and Gary Neat,
and past Treasurer Peter McMullin, who all
stepped down from their Officeholder
positions at the 2014 AGM, for their generous
commitment and time as part of the Executive
team. A very warm thank you also to Council
member Lisa Pititto who stepped down in
June due to other commitments.
I would also like to thank colleagues on the
Executive and Council, in particular Vice
Presidents Breck Hilton and Sean
Jesudason, and Treasurer Greg
Romanes, who stepped into the
position after the newly elected
Treasurer Richard Green had to
retire early due to health reasons.
Subsequent to the 2014 AGM, we
welcomed additional new Council
members John ML Woods and
Alastair Roff.
In accordance with the
Constitution, Michael Helman and Ian Howie
are retiring from the Council at the 2015
AGM having completed two consecutive
three year terms. I thank them too for their
terrific contribution.
Executive Committee
I disbanded the Executive Committee;
preferring to take all matters to Council and
from time to time, bringing together
particular Council Members to progress
particular issues. Although an Executive
Committee can at times be useful; it can end
up being the de facto manager of a
business; thus exorcising the Council from
many decisions.
Highlights of the Year
It is always difficult to pick out highlights but
I cannot resist in doing so. The Sir Zelman
Cowen Oration, organised by Committee
Chair and Vice President Gary Neat, was
T
AIIAV 2014/2015 Annual Report Page 4 of 14
delivered by Peter Varghese, Secretary of the
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
We had over 200 participants at the
International Careers Conference which was
more than ably managed by John Allen. A
great stalwart was Cate Pickett with all her
helpers during the course of the year provided
the most exciting and informative Speakers to
us.
Reaching Out to Other Organisations
Another important initiative has been our
involvement with Deakin, Latrobe and
Monash Universities where we have sought
and achieved a close co-operation led by John
Woods and David Harper. And we are looking
for more developments in this area where we
link up with other organisations with like-
minded objectives.
Young Professionals Forum (YPF)
The Young Professionals Forum has had a
more than successful year driven by Council
members Sean Jesudason, Eileen McInnes,
Matthew Di Leo and Sinead Ferris with the
team of Will McEniry, Nicholas Morieson,
Marlene Millott, Rachel Kaye, Jonathon
Hasuler, Kate Hilgendorf, Alexander Scott,
Warren Evans, Hayden Meney, Arthur Moore,
Malvina Predecki, Kelly MacDonald and
Arthur Darras.
The YPF team at the offices of the Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade for the Networking Evening.
The Forum presented six events over the
period looking at
the return to great power politics,
the wider implications of the
Australian Government’s new anti-
terror laws between security and
liberty,
economic diplomacy in action with
Austrade’s Senior Trade
Commissioner in Seoul, Mr Brett
Cooper,
the annual Trivia Night, and
a special Networking Evening hosted
at the offices of the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade Victoria;
and the extent of the slave trade.
The Forum actively manages the Institute’s
social media sites and assists with the
International Careers Conference.

Membership
I am delighted to say that our number of
active Members we have has increased
from 477 at the end of June 2014 to 538 at
the end of June 2015. Thank you for your
support and interest in the AIIA. Perhaps
one of the most important ways of
encouraging new Members is through word
of mouth and you, the Membership base,
are the best people to promote the AIIA.
You obviously did a good job of doing so
over the past year!
Study Tours
Following on from Study Tours in China and
Myanmar, Peter McMullen lead a Study
Tour to East Timor late last year, travelling
from 24 October to 4 November, 2014.
Peter has visited Timor-Leste regularly since
2002, during which time he has mentored
the establishment of Timor-Leste's first
Chamber of Commerce, and has acted as
adviser to the Foreign Minister of Timor-
Leste. The small group visited Baucau,
AIIAV 2014/2015 Annual Report Page 5 of 14
Tutuala/Jaco Island, Maubisse, Balibo,
Ataour and Dilli. There were briefings with
representatives from government and a
range of not-for-profit organisations along
with activities which provided insights into
the culture, economy and political history of
the country. Some highlights included
briefings from representatives from the World
Bank, the Chamber of Commerce and the
Australian Army; and visits to community co-
operatives, a coffee farm and to the War
Memorial in Balibo. The planned briefing
from the Foreign Minister was unfortunately
cancelled due to an unexpected issue arising
on the day.
We had planned a Study Tour to Japan for
2015. This did not eventuate because of the
lack of numbers. I have learned a couple of
lessons from this:
people need a good lead time to be
able to commit themselves to a Study
Tour,
we need to have Study Tour leaders
who will attract participants, and
it is desirable for us to be invited to
another country by our counterparts in
other countries.
Following a number of suggestions from
various Members, for which thanks, we are
planning Study Tours in the next couple of
years to Iran, South America, Norway, Japan,
Turkey and maybe UAE. If you have any
suggestions as to destinations for Study
Tours please do let me know.
Volunteers and Interns
The number of Volunteers and Interns we do
have, to an extent, gives us a pleasing
headache as they have to be managed,
coached and they have to be integral to our
business. Peta McDermott has done a
sterling job in ensuring that we not only
provide interns with an experience but also
that they benefit our organisation.
Internships awarded during the year included
for the Programme, Arthur Moore and
Marcus Hickleton; for the International
Careers Conference Sophie Westland, Tom
McQuillan, Brigid O’Farrell and Marleen
Honig; for Special Events Nathaniel Imam;
and for Marketing Lachy Lamour and Eliah
Castiello.
Euan Crone Asian Awareness Scholarship
The Euan Crone Asian Awareness
Scholarship last year provided scholarships
to Victorian members Marlene Millot and
Samantha Tasic. Marlene had been
accepted to study at the Australian
Consortium for In-Country Indonesian
Studies Journalism Professional practicum
in Jakarta. Samantha had undertaken an
unpaid United Nations internship at the
Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of
Cambodia in Phnom Penh, Cambodia,
where key members of the Khmer Rouge
will be brought to trial.

VCE Seminar Programme
During the year we had one only VCE
Seminar Programme due to a number of
factors including timing, ability to attract
schools and others to help us organise the
event. The seminar was on “Ethical Issues
and Debates”. Professor Richard Tanter
spoke on arms control and disarmament,
and Mr David Wallace from the
International Office for Migration spoke
about people movement.
Vale
A former president, the Hon. Michael
MacKellar AM, died on 6 May 2015.
Michael served on Council for many years
and was President from 2008 until 2011.
He steered the Institute with skill and tact
during some difficult times, particularly
arising from the onset of the global financial
crisis. He will be sadly missed by his many
friends at the Institute.
Benefactors
We are most indebted to our many donors.
During the past Financial Year they donated
$10,015.
In addition to that, we are indebted to The
Walter Mangold Trust Fund for their
AIIAV 2014/2015 Annual Report Page 6 of 14
continued support of our Interns, Volunteers
and younger Members. In particular, this has
enabled them to participate in functions such
as the Sir Zelman Cowan Oration. The Sir
Wilfred Brookes Charitable Foundation has
also been terrific in promoting the AIIA. I
thank all who have contributed to the
financial well-being of the AIIA.
Interns, volunteers and Young Professionals Forum team
members with Mr Peter Varghese at the Sir Zelman Cowen
Oration, their attendance made possible by the generosity of
The Walter Mangold Trust Fund.
The Friends of the AIIA Society
The Society was established to recognise and
honour those who generously support the
AIIA. We thank our Friends for this year:

AIIA Fellows
I would like to congratulate Rev Tim Costello
AO and Ms Jenny McGregor as Victorian
appointees to the AIIA Fellow programme.
This programme was created to recognise
exceptional contributions to Australia’s
international relations.
I encourage you to read the reports by the
Treasurer, on the International Careers
Conference and Cate Pickett’s report on
events held during the year.
I look forward to an eventful year ahead;
and to your participation in it.

The Programme
Thank you to all those members who have
attended our Events Programme this year.
Your presence and interest ensures that the
work that goes into preparing the Programme
is worthwhile.
There were over 35 events during the year
directly related to the Programme. There has
been a specific focus on the Middle East in
keeping with the topical nature of ISIS
activities. We also had a couple of different
topics this year – “Sport as a unifying force”
(Mr Michael Brown, CEO of the Asian Cup) and
“Ebola: What have we learnt and where are
we going?” (Professor Cameron Simmons,
Nossal Institute of Global Health).

We continue to work with the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade and appreciate the
valuable information they provide about both
visiting dignitaries and possible events that
might be of interest.
Mr Yusuf Abramjee,
Head of News &
Current Affairs,
Primedia, and Head of
Lead SA, held at the
offices of the
Department of Foreign
Affairs & Trade.
We also held several partnership events this
year and will be looking to continue these,
providing access to different events for our
members.
Our two interns on the Committee, Arthur
Moore (July – December) and Marcus
Hickleton (Jan – Jun), have done a great job
and each has added their own expertise to
the support of the committee.
Congratulations to all involved in bringing
such interesting and diverse events to our
Membership.

International Careers Conference 2014
The tenth International Careers Conference
(ICC) was held on Friday 29th August at the
University of Melbourne. We were
extremely grateful for the conference
sponsorship by Haileybury and venue
support by the University of Melbourne.
The purpose of the ICC is to provide
students with insights into the varied
options available to those considering
embarking on an international career and
the implications of working internationally.
Keynote speakers were Derek Scott, the
Principal of Haileybury who spoke about the
increasing internationalisation of secondary
school studies, particularly as regards
Australia’s relationships in Asia; John
Richardson, former Ambassador in a
number of countries and now the Director
of the Victorian State Office of the
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade,
who spoke entertainingly and insightfully
about DFAT careers; and Erika Feller, who
spoke compellingly about her career in UN
Agencies, notably as UN Human
Commissioner for Refugees.
International Careers Conference panel speakers from left:
Rev Tim Costello AO, Ms Dimity Fifer, Mr Leonard Vary and
Mr Paul Ronalds.
There were also three panel discussions.
The first, chaired by Leonard Vary of the
AIIAV 2014/2015 Annual Report Page 8 of 14
Myer Foundation, featured Tim Costello AO of
World Vision, Dimity Fifer of Australian
Volunteers International and Paul Ronalds of
Save the Children, discussing international
careers in the NGO sector. This was followed
by the Business Panel, chaired by Bronte
Adams of Dandolo Partners discussing
international careers in business with Peter
Nash of KPMG, Jonathan Harvey of the ANZ
Banking Group and Larry Kamener of BCG
Consulting. The afternoon panel, featuring
Marion van Rooden of the Victorian
Department of State Development, Business
and Innovation, Karen Halbert of Tourism
Australia and Peter Vados from the
Department of Immigration was chaired by
Ian Howie of RMIT, discussing international
career opportunities in Commonwealth and
Victorian government organisations. In all
these sessions there were informative
Question and Answer exchanges between
speakers and the more than 200 final year
undergraduate and post-graduate students
who attended the conference.
Participants
at the ICC
2014.
Our thanks go to Committee Chair John
Allen, and the AIIAV team ably led by Sophie
Westland, working closely with the
Executive Officer Peta McDermott, for their
hard work towards making the 2014 ICC
such a successful day for those seeking
information on international careers.
The Financial Situation
The Institute recorded a profit of $8,390 for
the year ended 30 June 2015 compared
with $5,077 in the previous year. During
2015, apart from a better return from
functions held and increased income due to
a study tour being held, most other activities
produced revenue and expenses similar to
those in the 2014 year.
Expenses associated with maintaining our
property in East Melbourne rose quite
significantly last financial year and since
balance date we have invested further in
essential property maintenance (fire stairs,
boiler repairs). We anticipate that we will
need to expect this substantial investment
in property maintenance to continue.
There was also a reduction in employment
expenses over the reporting period, which
were associated with the engagement of a
Development Manager in early 2014. This
appointment provided a poor return on
investment and was discontinued.
