Who we are

Established by Indigenous leaders in 2001, the AILC is a not-for-profit company, owned and controlled by Indigenous Australians. As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), the organisation has built an outstanding profile as one of the nation’s leading Indigenous education providers.

Recognised Indigenous leaders on the organisation’s staff and Board provide access to skills, knowledge, opportunities and networks, helping participants in AILC courses to thrive.

The AILC has extensive experience in delivery of Indigenous leadership programs at a range of locations across Australia. As an Indigenous organisation, staffed by a majority of Indigenous people, the AILC is experienced in negotiating issues of access and cultural sensitivity in order to deliver successful and relevant Indigenous leadership courses.

Course purposeThe 10412NAT Certificate II in Indigenous Leadership introduces the key elements of Indigenous leadership in Australia and builds upon the capacity of emerging Indigenous Australian leaders to lead.

This course gives students the basic knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to commence and be involved in Indigenous Leadership roles. It assists students to identify their own strengths in order to plan their leadership journeys in the future.

Course durationThis course is delivered over a 10 week period. Some assessment work may be required to be completed prior to the residential workshops and between residential workshops.

Is the 10412NAT Certificate II in Indigenous Leadership an accredited course?The 10412NAT Certificate II in Indigenous Leadership is an accredited course. Upon successful completion of course requirements and assessments, students will receive the award of 10412NAT Certificate II in Indigenous Leadership and an Academic Transcript listing the units and competence level achieved.

Course purposeThe 10413NAT Certificate IV in Indigenous Leadership builds upon existing highly developed leadership skills and works to further develop these key skills and knowledge. It establishes pathways to further education and training, enabling students to aspire to higher levels of responsibility in chosen arenas such as senior roles in workplaces and community organisations.

Course purposeThe BSB41915 Certificate IV in Business (Governance) introduces the key elements of operating in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander organisations and the capacity of Indigenous Australian leaders to affect governance.

This course is designed to reflect the roles of individuals who undertake responsibilities required of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander organisations, and who bring a wide range of knowledge, skills, talents and experience to their organisations and require further training.

Upon successful completion of course requirements and assessments, students will receive the qualification of BSB41915 Certificate IV in Business (Governance) and an Academic Transcript listing the units and competence level achieved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the Trainers and Assessors?Our Trainers and Assessors are experienced Indigenous people with specific areas of expertise or non-Indigenous specialists with Indigenous training experience. This ensures unique, high quality, culturally appropriate courses.

What are the pre-requisites?Students must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

Is there an age limit for the courses?To be accepted in our courses you must be 18 or over.

Do I have to be employed?You do not have to be employed to undertake AILC courses.

What happens if I have low literacy or numeracy levels?All AILC students are required to undertake an online Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment as part of the enrolment process. The AILC will work with all students regardless of their skill level. The AILC team leaders will assist students in completing all work required on course and look for other options to assist the student outside of course time.

Do I have to complete assessments for my course?You will be required to undertake pre-readings on either side of the blocks and complete assessments whilst on course. These assessments include written work, observations, presentations and group work/activities.

Will I get a certificate when I finish?The AILC will only issue nationally recognised qualifications to students who complete all assessment work satisfactorily.

Our Trainers and Assessors are experienced Indigenous people with specific areas of expertise or non-Indigenous specialists with Indigenous training experience.

What happens if I have to withdraw from a course?Students who are unable to attend will be required to officially withdraw from their course through written response. There are no costs to students for withdrawals and students will have the opportunity to return and complete the course at a later date.

Do I need to bring anything with me on course?All course materials are provided (Note books, pens, resources etc.). Please make sure you go over your pre-reading prior to the first block as your pre-reading may require you to bring something in to class.

Where are the courses held?Locations for these courses vary, please contact us on 02 6251 5770 for more information.

How much do the courses cost?If you are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander the cost of the qualification is funded by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Accommodation, meals and travel is not covered.

How many other students will be on course with me?Student numbers vary. A typical course can have up to 30 students.

Can I complete my course online or by correspondence?At this stage, the AILC does not offer these courses online or by correspondence, however watch this space as the AILC may look at these options in the future.

If you are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander the cost of the qualification is funded by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

Who pays for my accommodation, travel and meals?The AILC does not cover the cost of your travel, accommodation or meals (lunch is included as part of the course, as well as morning tea and afternoon tea). If you are a local, you will only need to worry about getting to and from the course. There are three (3) funding options that you can choose from, however the AILC encourages the first two options:

1. Self-funding (Travel, meals and accommodation)

2. Sponsored by your employer (Travel, meals and accommodation)

3. Apply for ABSTUDY (Need to meet eligibility criteria)

What is ABSTUDY?ABSTUDY helps with costs for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians who are studying or undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship. ABSTUDY is a government organisation and is separate to the AILC. To be eligible for ABSTUDY you must be:

• Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander

• Enrolled in an approved course

• Not receiving any other government assistance to study or do an apprenticeship or traineeship

ABSTUDY helps with costs for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians who are studying or undertaking an Australian Apprenticeship.
