Women in Economics Network (WEN)

The Women in Economics Network (WEN) is linked to The Economic Society of Australia. It has been formed to promote and support the careers of female economists in Australia.

The objectives for the Women in Economics Network are to:

• professionally connect and support the career development of women in economics,

• increase the representation of women at all levels of the economics profession,

• promote public contributions by female economists,

• encourage young women to study economics.

Membership of The Society and the WEN is open to anyone with an interest in economics including economists and other professionals in academia, government, business and teaching. People can join the WEN by becoming members of their local branch of The Economic Society of Australia.

Men are welcome (and encouraged) to become members of WEN and attend most WEN events. However, some of the activities of the WEN such as the Women in Economics Retreat, mentoring program and media register are targeted specifically at women.

Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre (BCEC)

The Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre is an independent economic and social research organisation located within the Curtin Business School at Curtin University.

The Centre was established in 2012 through the generous support of Bankwest, a division of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The Centre’s core mission is to deliver high quality, accessible research that enhances our understanding of key economic and social issues that contribute to the wellbeing of West Australian families, businesses and communities.

BCEC’s research and engagement activities are designed to influence economic and social policy debates in state and Federal Parliament, regional and national media, and the wider Australian community. Through high quality, evidence-based research and analysis, our research outcomes inform policy makers and commentators of the economic challenges to achieving sustainable and equitable growth and prosperity both in Western Australia and nationally.

The Centre capitalises on Curtin University’s reputation for excellence in economic modelling, forecasting, public policy research, trade and industrial economics and spatial sciences. Centre researchers have specific expertise in economic forecasting, quantitative modelling and economic and social policy evaluation.

Page 4: AUSTRALIAN GENDER ECONOMICS WORKSHOP · 2017-12-19 · This workshop will provide researchers with a forum for presenting and discussing innovative research incorporating gender analysis

This workshop will provide researchers with a forum for presenting and discussing innovative research incorporating gender analysis in all areas of economics. Priority will be given to sessions that can inform policy-relevant questions.

The workshop will include a special policy session involving senior influencers from government, research, industry and not-for-profit communities. The purpose of this session is to draw research insights from the workshop together in ways that will actively shape policies to enhance the status of women across the full spectrum of economic and social outcomes.

We are also delighted to confirm our keynote speakers: Professor Alison Booth (Australian National University) and Associate Professor Betsey Stevenson (University of Michigan).

While substantial progress toward gender equity has been made over the past decades, key gaps in various life aspects relating to family, education, employment, wealth, security, voice and agency remain. There is a need for new insights to better understand the role and impact of gender on all economic and social domains, and to translate these insights into actions. The workshop aims to help fill this gap.

The Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre at Curtin University, together with The Economic Society of Australia’s Women in Economics Network are pleased to announce the Australian Gender Economics Workshop.

Rottnest IslandThere are plenty of adventures to be had at Rottnest Island. Don’t just limit yourself to swimming and bike riding, there are so many exciting Rottnest Island tours, ocean and island activities to be experienced.

Fremantle PrisonFremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and is the first built heritage site in Western Australia to be World Heritage Listed.

The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent.

Built from limestone carved from a rigde overlooking Fremantle town and the Indian Ocean beyond it is the most intact convict gaol in Australia and has altered little since its construction.

Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour.

Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20 metres beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure.

Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on a spooky Torchlight Tour.

Swan Valley VineyardsJust 20 minutes east of Perth, the Swan Valley and Darling Range is a world away from city life. You can reach it by road, or take the scenic route aboard a Swan River cruise from Perth’s Barrack Street Jetty. You can even winery-hop in the back of a horse-drawn wagon or chauffeured classic car.

Little Creatures BreweryA huge shed (and former crocodile farm) on the water’s edge in Fremantle was to become the home of this beer and the birthplace of Little Creatures Brewing. Work began in 1999 and we swung the doors open in late 2000.

Grab a pint & a pizza and soak in the brewery atmosphere or wander out into the backyard and enjoy your beer in the sunshine.

Free Perth Walking ToursThe iCity Volunteer Hosts help visitors discover the City of Perth. They staff the City of Perth Information Kiosk located in the Murray Street Mall at the intersection of Forrest Place and are on hand every day to answer questions about the city.

Kings ParkKings Park and Botanic Garden is one of the largest inner city parks in the world and is visited by over 6 million people each year.

Kings Park’s stunning location overlooks the Perth City and the silken blue waters of the Swan River. From high above, you can see the brilliantly coloured sails of boats on the river, the twinkling lights of the city, the distant Perth Hills and the endless blue skies for which Perth is so renowned.

Western Australia has a range of world-class experiences for you to enjoy while you are visiting. Below are some of our favourite destinations or visit www.visitperthcity.com for more ideas.
