Early Childhood Kindergarten – Year 2

At Australian Christian College, we believegetting your child off to the best possiblestart with their schooling is paramount. As such, we have a dedicated team of EarlyChildhood specialist teachers nurturingstudents in their first years at school.

In Kindergarten, students are engaged in a predominantly play-based program which stimulates communication, discovery, imagination and creativity. They are encouraged to develop appropriate social skills - such as making friends .

As students progress through Pre-Primarythey are grasping counting, reading and writing skills. The focus is on ensuring students have a solid foundation in literacy and numeracy.

In Years 1 and 2 students are extending their literacy and numeracy skills learnt in Pre-Primary. For example, learning connections between numbers as in addition and subtraction.

With a great learning foundation established in Early Childhood, students are set up for success as they transition into the Junior School.

Junior School Years 3 – 6

Having gained the foundational knowledge and skills during the Early Childhood years, your child will be ready to flourish in Junior School.

Your child’s natural curiosity will be nurtured into a thirst for knowledge, which is typically the seed that grows into a love of learning.

The Junior School academic program is focused on extending literacy and numeracy skills as well as advancing knowledge in other key learning areas, such as science and history.

After spending 4 years in Junior School, your child will be well prepared to confidentially enter Senior School.

Senior School Years 7 – 12

At this pivotal time in a young adult’s life the Senior School endeavours to ensure students shine spiritually, academically, socially and physically.

The academic program includes challenge-based and inquiry learning grounded in a real-world context with case studies, projects and group work. Students work studiously to prepare for tertiary education and working life.

To assist this preparation, students have access to the school’s career adviser to aid in the selection of subject choices, work experience and post-school pathways.

In Senior School, every student is encouraged to be their best, in readiness for the challenges and opportunities of life after school.

BEYONDTHE CLASSROOMA GREAT EDUCATION IS MORE THAN SIMPLY ACADEMICS

Learning often occurs spontaneously in settings outside the classroom. To ensure this impromptu learning flourishes, the school will commence offering a range of co-curricular options from 2013.

Co-curricular opportunities will cover the Arts, sport, outdoor education and public speaking. Your child may decide to play the violin, shoot baskets, climb rock walls or debate climate change.

The Arts allows students to express their unique personality. Our integrated arts program will include music, drama and visual arts. The school currently has staff with expertise in the areas of visual art and music, and is seeking to expand this team through the involvement of a drama teacher and instrumental tutors.

Sport is vital and growing part of school life at Australian Christian College. It helps to promote cooperation and team spirit. Students are encouraged to strive for their personal best, while demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship.

The outdoor education program, from 2013, will include a comprehensive annual camping program. Students from Year 3 on will undertake outdoor activities designed to develop physical skills, resilience, perseverance, confidence and self-control.

The confidence that public speaking instills is well documented. As such, public speaking is incorporated into the curriculum for the benefit of all students. For those students who excel or would like to further enhance their skills, they will be able be involved in the school’s debating team and public speaking competitions.

Students are able to serve with our charity partner Compassion Australia. This partnership allows students to help other children who are less fortunate.

With so many co-curricular opportunities available into the future, students will have trouble deciding what to do!

As well as being servant-hearted and caring our teachers are professional educators. To maintain the school’s high standards of teaching and learning, the teaching team engage in regular professional development.

DELIVERING AN EDUCATION THAT LASTS BEYOND A LIFETIME

Your child has many things vying for their affection. Amid all the earthly temptations, we are working to ensure the school delivers a positive spiritual influence on your child.

Academic rigour and co-curricular opportunities are undoubtedly important, however we are striving to have an eternal impact on the students.

Importantly, our approach to laying a biblical foundation in every student is one of human inquiry. As you know, Christianity is based on historical events and documented evidence. Students are encouraged to investigate the facts.

Christian values and beliefs are weaved into the very fabric of the school through a biblically consistent learning program, Christian teachers and regular prayer.

Stemming from our Christian ethos, we value:

» Lord Jesus Christ, friend of sinners, and saviour of those who believe

» A diversity of student opportunities as they seek to identify their God-given talents

» Service in local and global communities

Visit the school and you’ll experience a community of young learners who are gracious and warm-hearted.

EMBRACING THE DIGITAL WORLDTHE SCHOOL IS DEVELOPING DIGITALLY FLUENT STUDENTS

Nowadays, students need an education delivered in a manner vastly different from which you experienced as a child.

To accommodate this change in the world, Australian Christian College has digitally enabled classrooms, pedagogical methods and an online learning portal.

This whole of school approach – called Digital Natives – ensures students will have the skills required to tackle the post-school world of work and further study.

Today’s student is a digital native. They don’t know what it is like to live in a world without the internet, social media and mobile technology. As a school community, we see this as a great opportunity to educate students in the ethical and effective use of technology.

To ensure this opportunity bears fruit, it is the long term intent of the school for every student from Kindergarten to Year 12 to have their own iPad or MacBook.

This approach allows digital learning opportunities to take place throughout the day without the need to go to formal computer labs or sit in front of a bulky desktop computer.

Digital Natives extends deeper into school life with a learning environment that is conducive to digital connectivity. The campus has wifi broadband access in all learning spaces and students conduct research from digital textbooks and ebooks. Plus, every student has their own email address through Google Apps and access to their courses via the online learning portal.

Importantly, the school is vigilant regarding the ethical use of technology, with students taking part in annual cybersafety courses.

Around the globe, digital technology is changing the way people live, work and learn. Australian Christian College is committed to ensuring our students are ready for this new digital world.

Australian Christian College and the distance educational programme it offers gave us, as parents, the peace of mind that our daughter’s final years of secondary education were in very safe hands. The programme not only allows school work to be accomplished at one’s own pace, but also teaches to set and achieve realistic goals and to become skillful time managers so as to be able to fit other passions and all things related (in our daughter’s case, music) into an already busy schedule. In addition to improving goal setting and time management skills, the programme nurtures a responsible learning attitude - all these being invaluable skills for not only everyday life, but also for further tertiary education. And the teachers and staff at Australian Christian College are to be commended for always being so approachable, helpful and friendly.

LEARNINGAT A DISTANCEDISTANCE EDUCATION IS OFF-CAMPUS SCHOOLING

Distance education is the educational practice where students are enrolled in a registered school and conduct their academic work at home under the supervision of a parent.

Distance education schooling is not limited to those in remote areas. Many distance education students live in cities and large regional towns, including Perth, Rockingham, Mandurah, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie, Geraldton and Albany.

A key benefit of distance education lies in the strong partnership and communication that occurs between teacher, parent and student.

Distance education parents provide their home environment as an ideal social context for their child’s learning to occur knowing they have the full support of the school. For many students this is an environment within which they gain affirmation in relation to their learning from their parents, teachers and other significant adults, as well as their siblings and family friends.

If you are interested in learning more about distance education as a schooling option for your child, please visit acc.edu.au.

I like being part of the school because I like the school work and there are teachers and staff to talk to and get help even though I am a distance education student.

- Krysten (Student)

The Australian Christian College distance education programme gave me a comprehensive and structured education, while also allowing me to have the independence and responsibility of managing my time and setting my own goals. The programme also allows for a flexible schedule, without which I would not have been able to pursue my passion for music to the extent that I have. The staff are always very friendly and helpful, and it is comforting to know that advice is just a phone call away.

- Erica (Student)

As a parent who has an on campus student and a distance education student, I like the school because of the support it offers both types of students. There is advice and support there for us and I really appreciate that.
