SUPRITA MITTER [email protected] ASSEMBLAGE is a start-up animation company, set up in 2014 and headquartered in Mumbai, that boasts of an award-winning team of over 280 employees including technocrats, artists and man- agement professionals with several years of collective expe- rience in the industry. Within just a year of its inception, the company completed its feature film with 90 minutes of com- puter-generated images out of their facility in Mumbai. “After being in the anima- tion industry for about 15 years, I had a deep under- standing of the market, the key players locally and interna- tionally and a solid understanding of the key chal- lenges that the industry was facing. We had reputable stu- dios in Los Angeles and other parts of the world who trusted our capabilities and ability to deliver, wanting a reliable Indian partner,” says AK Madhavan, CEO, Assemblage Produced by Flying Bark Productions (Australia), Assemblage and Telegael Teoranta (Ireland), the movie will also have a worldwide realease post September 17, “The project came about because of my previous business relationships with the producers Jim Ballantine and Barbara Stephen,” shares Madhavan. First introduced to audi- ences in the 1930s through a series of children’s books, Blinky Bill is considered an iconic Australian children’s classic. The story revolves around a small koala, Blinky, with a big imagination. He is an adventurer who dreams of leaving the little town of Green Patch and following his explor- er father’s footsteps. Blinky embarks on a journey that takes him beyond the bound- ary of Greenpatch, in the wild and dangerous Australian landscape in his quest to find his missing father. The total budget of the movie is USD 12.5million and Assemblage not only partici- pated as a service provider but also as co-producer of this film. The project was completed within 10 months. Technical glitch Talking about the challenges faced during the project, Madhavan tells us, “There are several challenges that are faced in the production of a feature, especially as an entre- preneurial set up. The challenges are primarily technology and finance driven. Setting up the studio infra- structure in a cost-effective yet efficient way, with limited cap- ital at hand, is a feat by itself. This is something we achieved through the collective experi- ence of the team and some creative thinking. We were also bound by time restrictions. Film production schedules are tight and the client’s demand for delivery are unwavering. Our challenge was to set up the studio, its technical infrastruc- ture, hire the right talent, and start delivering high-quality content based on a tight pro- duction calendar.” “In terms of opportunities, the scope and potential of ani- mation, in India is huge. Firstly, as a market, there is an evident growth in domestic consumption. The local audi- ences are now gradually accepting animation feature films as a viable alternative form of entertainment,” informs Madhavan He further explains that the rise of Indian fictional characters is an indi- cation in that direction but also that more importantly, Indian audiences are watching global animation productions too and appreciating the quality of this different class of filmed entertainment. India is bound to get better with its low-cost yet high- quality capabilities (state of the art hardware, software and human capital), convergence of technology and creative sensibilities, it’s growing track record of delivery, strengthen- ing relationships with global producers — India remains a valuable partner in such pro- ductions across the value chain,” he concludes. The event will take place on Saturday at IIT Bombay, Powai. Currently in its fifth edi- tion, the meet will have CEOs from some of the most recent start-ups, industry leaders, and more than 300 new start-ups sharing their expe- rience of running a business, discussing ideas and various issues plaguing the Indian start-up industry, and in the process will offer a few tips on how to run their business. Naveen Raju, executive director, TiE Mumbai chap- ter, says that there are a lot of start-ups in the city, who are doing things differently. “Some are new, while others have been around for a couple of years. The TiE Smash-Up aims to bring the experienced to share their experiential and industry knowledge with the newcomers,” he informs. So, there is a special panel discussion featuring Taskbob's founder Aseem Khare, Shreekant Pawar, founder of Diabeto, and Sameer Parwani of Coupon Dunia, who won the SmashUp Award himself, four years ago, investigating what start-ups need to do right in the first crucial 365 days. The event will feature workshops informing start- ups of the legal and financial aspects of running a business. The event will also feature Kunal Shah, founder of Freecharge, and other compa- ny founders including OML (Vijay Nair), DocEngage (Ahimanikya Satapathy) and Holachef (Saurabh Saxena) who will share their journey. One of the highlights would be a speed-dating session where newcomers will pitch ideas to potential investors in less than two minutes, in a very informal session. The event will also see a food trail, where food-based start-ups will be sharing samples of their products. "There will be no suits, no presentations, and most importantly, no VC talks or the big boy talks that scare off newcomers. It's about meet- ing people and sharing stories," informs Raju. But why the need for such informal sessions? "We do lot of workshops all year, but this is an event where new blood start-ups come out, and we don't want to scare them away," he reasons.
