GOVS SEASON NOTESLIPSCOMB RECAP■ THE LEADCLARKSVILLE – With five players in double figures, Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team topped Arkansas-Pine Bluff 97-61 in their Dunn Center return.

■ HOW IT HAPPENED ■ The comeback Govs needed no second-half

resurgence Wednesday night, as they pulled away from Arkansas-Pine Bluff grabbing a 15-point lead in the first quarter that they would never surrender.

■ Kelen Kenol and Brianne Alexander took advantage of the Golden Lions guard-heavy lineup as Kenol scored four points and Alexander added five points and two rebounds down low. Freshman Brianah Ferby got off to a hot start scoring 11 points in the first quarter coming off the bench.

■ Keisha Gregory found her rhythm in the second quarter shooting 75.0 percent from the field scoring nine points, bringing down five rebounds and recording one steal. The Governors scored 15 points off turnovers in the first half, taking a 50-24 lead into the halftime break.

■ Coming out of the half, Alexander scored four early points off strong offensive rebounds. Her inside performance was aided by the outside shooting of Brianah Ferby and Brandi Ferby, who each scored six points, going a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. The Governors put up 30 points in the third quarter, the most they have scored in a single quarter this season.

■ The Governors scored 15 bench points in the final period, with junior college transfer Michaela Campbell leading the way with seven points, while freshmen Myah LeFlore and Brandi Ferby added four points each.

■ Brianah Ferby lead the Governors with 17 points, three rebounds and two steals. Gregory scored in double-digits for the fourth straight game racking up 15 points and five rebounds.

■ Brianah Ferby lead the Governors with 17 points, three rebounds and two steals. Gregory scored in double-digits for the fourth straight game racking up 15 points and five rebounds.

■ GAME NOTES ■ Austin Peay remains undefeated against Arkansas-

Pine Bluff leading the series 2-0. ■ The Govs are on a five-game winning streak for the

first time since the 2010-11 season where they won five games in a row during OVC play.

■ The last time Austin Peay scored over 90 points in a game was Jan. 9, 2016 in a 91-75 victory over Tennessee Tech.

■ Five Governors scored in double-digits: Brianah Ferby (17), Gregory (15), Alexander (12), Kenol (12) and Brandi Ferby (10).

■ Brianah Ferby led the Govs in scoring, the second time she has led the team in that category this season.

■ Williams led the team in assists (6) and Brandi Ferby led the team in steals (3).

■ The Governors 19 assists is a season high.

NO LEARNING CURVE FOR FERBY: Despite being a freshman Brianah Ferby has not let her untested talent go unnoticed. She has shot 50 percent from the field, pulled in six rebounds, dished three assists and racked up six steals in her first two collegiate games play-ing more minutes than any other newcomer.

NO SENIORITIS, TITLE FOCUS: The Govs have two seniors, Bri Williams and Brianne Alexan-der, and one redshirt junior, Falon Baker, who are not succombing to senioritis yet. They re-main focused and determined in order to have Austin Peay in the best position possible for the OVC Tournament.

15-GAME HOME SLATE: A backloaded non-conference schedule, a 15-game home slate and an 18-game marathon Ohio Valley Con-ference slate all highlight the 2017-18 Austin Peay State University women’s basketball schedule. Austin Peay opens its 2017-18 slate on the road with a Nov. 11 contest in his-toric Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to face Butler for the first time since 2004. The Gov-ernors home opener follows three days later when Christian Brothers visits Clarksville, Nov. 14, followed by a Nov. 19 matchup with Trevecca. Austin Peay also will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Nov. 29), Evansville (Dec. 2) and Western Illinois (Dec. 9) in the nonconference slate.

BAKER FOR THREE: Falon Baker kick starts her redshirt junior year, looking to remain hot from deep. Baker was the Governors most consistent 3-point scorer shooting 32 percent from behind the arc, draining 41 threes in the 2016-17 season.

THREE STARTERS RETURN: The Govs return three starters from last year’s OVC Tourna-ment team. Senior guard Bri Williams will again run the point in her senior year, while redshirt junior Falon Baker and junior Keisha Gregory will be the focus of the Governors of-fensive production this season.

NEW BLOOD, VETERAN LEADERSHIP: The Governors bring nine new players into the fold this season who will have to learn Midlick’s style and playbook, but the Govs have a strong foundation of veteran leaders in seniors Bri-anne Alexander and Bri Williams, as well as redshirt junior Falon Baker and junior Keisha Gregory who are ready to step into their new roles on and off the court.

GOVS PICKED 6TH IN POLLS: Austin Peay was picked to finish sixth in both the OVC Me-dia Poll and the OVC Coaches Poll, voted on by

head coaches and SIDs. The Governors move up three sports in the polls since last season.

BANKS SIGNS TO PLAY IN ISRAEL: Tearra Banks, a recent graduate and alumna of the Austin Peay State University women’s basket-ball team, has signed to play professionally and will play the upcoming season for Bnot Hertzeliya in Israel’s Division I. Banks finished her four-year career at Austin Peay by earn-ing 2016-17 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year honors. She averaged 19 points and eight rebounds per game, ranking second and first among conference players in those two categories respectively. Banks also finished 13th nationally with a 59.9 field-goal percent-age as a senior.

REPLACING BANKS: Austin Peay’s major question entering the 2017-18 season is re-placing the offensive production and defen-sive prescence of Tearra Banks who led the Governors in scoring averaging 19 points per game and in rebouding averaging 8.0 re-bounds a contest.

COLE ELEVATED TO DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS: Austin Peay State University women’s basket-ball coach David Midlick promoted Drew Cole to director of basketball operations. In his new role, Cole will be responsible for planning re-cruiting and travel. In addition, he is respon-sible for managing the student-athlete’s daily calendars. Cole will continue to oversee the team’s film exchange and breakdown.

TUBNER, JEWELL JOIN COACHING STAFF: Austin Peay State University women’s basketball head coach David Midlick announced the ad-ditions of Roman Tubner and Teonna Jewell to his coaching staff. Tubner joins the Governors after previ-ously serving as the only assistant coach at Arkansas Tech since 2014. In that time span, he helped guide the Golden Suns to a three-year record of 73-19 which included two Great American Conference regular season champi-onships and three appearances in the Divi-sion II NCAA Tournament. Jewell comes to Clarksville having spent the last two seasons at Youngstown State as Director of Basketball Operations. In her role, she wore many hats in managing the daily op-erations of the program, including scheduling team practices, individual workouts and team travel logistics. OVC CHAMPIONSHIP MOVES TO EVANSVILLE The Ohio Valley Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships presented by VisitMyrtleBeach.com, will be held February 28 thorugh March 3 at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. It marks the first time the event has been held at the Ford Center, after 23 of the past 24 events were held in Nashville (2002 being the lone year the event was not held in Music City). The Ford Center, which opened in 2011, is a 10,000-seat arena located in the core of Evansville’s downtown district. The 290,000-square foot facility serves as home of the University of Evansville’s men’s basketball team as well as the Evansville Thunderbolts of the Southern Professional Hockey League.
