A Letter to Our ReadersOctober is the month for scary stuff, but scary stuff aint

what it used to be. Movie monsters used to be sympathetic anti-heroes with a human side Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman. Now, even the screen in your own home is filled with truly terrifying creatures, mockeries of humanity, void of personality, with sagging flesh and insatiable appetites. They can be stopped, its said, only by destroying the least functional part of their bodies their heads.

You dont have to watch Real Housewives, though. You can always watch zombies, since theyve been dug back up (sorry) as the latest pop culture boogieman. Zombies

are pretty scary and definitely gross, but lacking in poetry and romance. A good boogieman needs a backstory, and someone to tell it a Poe, a Bradbury, a Bram Stoker.

Regardless of your taste in boogiemen, however, there are a couple of important things to remember when youre dealing with things that go bump in the night never go see whats making that noise outside the cabin, and never ever open that closet door. Michael Abedin

Do you believe in God?I would get that question after people read my book, The Attractor Factor, or read

(or saw the movie) The Secret.They somehow assumed that the Law of Attraction replaced God.They somehow assumed that people who practice the Law of Attraction are

playing God.

That confused me.God gave you the Law of Attraction, I would explain. Just as God or the

Divine, Universe, or Nature gave you gravity. Its a tool you can use, but it doesnt replace the person who gave it to you.

Id go on to explain that I absolutely believe in God, but usually call that ultimate force of life the Divine, to neutralize any emotional buttons people have when they hear the word God.

But this unseen force is not only giving us life, Its nudging us in a certain direction, too.

In a way, the force is pruning us.As you go about your life, you get bumped and rocked by events as a way for Life

(God, Divine, etc.) to direct you where IT wants you to go.The more you follow the nudges, the easier life gets.This article is an example.I was eating dinner with Nerissa when the idea for this post entered my mind.I wasnt looking for an idea.I was enjoying my dinner.But Ive learned to obey the Divines inspirations.So I turned to Nerissa and said, You know how I get ideas at odd moments?She looked at me and said See you later.She understood.

Heres another example.I was in New York City on business and decided to visit Rudys Music Store in

SoHo.I knew it was famous, that Rudy Pensa is a renowned collector of rare

instruments, and I suspected itd be worth the trip to see it.It was.The beautiful store is two stories of new and old guitars, acoustic and electric,

some highly collectible, all stunning.I was in awe of the place.In a display case was a 1938 DAngelico New Yorker archtop guitar.

If you know guitars, you just fainted.The late John DAngelico is considered the Michelangelo of guitar makers.His instruments are sought after by collectors, musicians, museums, and fans.Books have been written about his style and his guitars.Even Rudy, the owner of the shop, created a mammoth coffee table book

(Archtop Guitars) with some of DAngelicos guitars described inside, knew DAngelico, and owns a few of his works.

DAngelico made 1,164 guitars in his life. (He died in 1964).He didnt hand carve all those guitars for fame or fortune.He said, Big money? Big title? For what? I want to build guitars under my own

name, for my own customers, the way I do it! For me thats a good life!6

And it happened.In other words, God is directing me (and you, too, of

course), and we can attract (or allow) miracles when we act on the signs and opportunities we are given.

But we have to participate.I could have said Ill skip Rudys and go to Starbucks.I could have said, Nah, that DAngelico is too expensive.I could have said, No, Id rather finish dinner than write this

post.But when you say YES to the inspirations, and take action,

you are following Divinitys plan for you.When you follow inspiration whether to build a guitar of

the caliber of a DAngelico, or to buy one you are following the Divines path for you.

But you may need a razor sharp sensitivity to hear the whisper, and total faith to take action on the prompting.

Werner Erhard (founder of est) used to say, If you knew what God wanted you to do, youd do it and be happy. Well, what you are doing right now is what God wants you to do.

So the next time you feel stuck or stopped, ask if Divinity is trying to redirect your path or your process.

Or the next time you receive a nudge to leave dinner early, or buy a guitar, ask if you are ready to step out in faith.

Where is God? Right here.

And there I was, staring at one of them.Gordon, the shopkeeper, pulled the 1938 masterpiece out

of the case and handed it to me.

I can play it? I asked.Yes, of course, he said. We want you to experience any

guitar you see here.I held the archtop as if it was out of a museum.I strummed it and heard the sound of angels.I looked it over and saw Gods handiwork in a guitar.I could tell the guitar was well played, well loved, and still

in flawless shape.Everything on it is original except the covering on the

pick guard, Gordon said. We even have the original case.Later, Rudy showed me the ledger in his book revealing

the serial number for the guitar, year made, and who it was made for, all in DAngelicos handwriting.

This is where I felt the inner tug at my heart that I think is the Divine calling me.

Ive learned to follow those tugs.After Rudy told me the price, and I gasped, I asked if there

was a discount for a guitar lover who would probably buy other guitars from him.

He laughed, ran some numbers, and gave me a slight break.I bought it.

What does this have to do with God?Look behind the scenesI only felt directed to go to one store in all of New York City

Rudys.I could have gone anywhere.And while there, the DAngelico seemed to call out my

name.I could have ignored it.I believe all of this was Divinity aiming my direction.Later, after I left the store and decided to walk two miles

back to my hotel, I wondered what would come of my buying an investment grade work of playable art.

Then another inspiration hit me. (Where do these inspirations come from?)

I realized that my forthcoming book, The Secret Prayer, could be enriched with the story of how I was led to the guitar.

You see, I had said a prayer before I left that morning, asking to be led to the right place and to experience a joyful event.

As Ive written before, Prayer is a way to activate the Law of Attraction by requesting an intention and inviting inspiration.

I said my prayer in a state of gratitude, made a request for an exciting day, and took action by following my hunch to go to Rudys.

From there, I simply allowed the miracle.

amphibian is the creation of Austin visionary artist, musician, and writer Michael Garfield, whose artwork is created live at music and art festivals.

abka, Garfield says, is Polish for little frog. Toads are amazing creatures ancient, metamorphic, sturdy, adaptable. Their habit of consuming the skin they shed makes them an image of transformation. The most potent animal toxin comes from a frog (batrachotoxin, from Phyllobates terribilis) and the most powerful hallucinogen (5-MeO-DMT, from Bufo alvarius). Amazonian tribes use the secretions of Phyllomedusa bicolor as a ritual purgative to purify themselves for hunting in the kambo

ceremony, rendering them temporarily and inexplicably immune to the shock of electric eels.

Not your first frog rodeo.Surprisingly, this isnt Garfields first frog cover. After

drawing frogs for a living as a scientific illustrator, he was hired to do a frog-themed cover for the book Integral Ecology: Uniting Multiple Perspectives on the Natural World. (You remember it.)

Ive always had a thing for frogs and toads. My first recognition as a writer was for a short story I wrote in the second grade, about talking dart-poison frogs. My earliest attempt at an illustrated manuscript was the year before, on the life cycle of frogs and toads. My first detention was for skipping class to hunt for toads in between school buildings, growing up in Florida.

Ernst Haeckel, who coined the term ecology, said ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny the development of individual organisms is a kind of re-enactment of their whole evolutionary history. We all start out as single cells, grow into worm-like creatures, then fish, and so on. Humans do this in the womb, and frogs and toads go through their transformation out where everyone can see. It resonates with my own open-studio process as a live painter, letting everyone observe the work unfold in public.

Enchantment its the key to all art, music and literature. Filmmaking started as flickering illusions of shadow and light that were seen as magic, and crowds have always flocked to see a good magic show. Digital technology means you can carry your own little box of enchantment with you everywhere, and be transported to another world wherever you are. (Literally transported, maybe, if you dont get in the habit of looking up from your magic phone from time to time say, crossing the street.)

Enchantments are also the heart of fairy tales and ghost stories. Magic spells, witches, princes and princesses, evil stepmothers, the clock striking midnight. Almost every fairy tale, from Hansel and Gretel to Cinderella to Sleeping Beauty, came from folklore gathered by Jacob and Wilhelm, the Brothers Grimm and their first published tale was about the Frog King.

You know the story.Princess loses golden ball in pond, frog finds it, on the

condition she takes him home. Princess kisses frog, frog becomes prince. (In one variation, she tosses the frog against the wall, and he bounces back as a prince.) Everybody lives happily ever after except the princess cant get rid of those pesky warts on her lip, and all their kids have a taste for flies.

Its a metaphor, of course underneath the wartiest, croakiest visage theres hidden beauty, just waiting for the right moment to emerge. No word on what happens if a prince kisses a toad, since they usually get to kiss sleeping princesses and Snow Whites and such.

If he happens to kiss the right toad (all toads are frogs, btw, but not all frogs are toads), he may wind up as a member of the Church of the Toad of Light, which apparently has a sacrament that involves licking frogs. Octobers cover artist, a man who knows his frogs, explains why.

What if we chose to pull out some real stuff, some of our own skeletons within that are holding us back?

Many of us grew up in families where we learned to keep secrets to protect our reputations or we were too ashamed to expose failures and inadequacies. Myths and legends warn of the wicked witch who lives at the edge of the forest, the green, warty creature who brews toxic tonics in her cauldron and bakes little children in her oven. She crafts poison apples to put princesses to sleep and casts potent spells over innocent men and women.

But bewareWhen one culture supplants another, its the ones who

survive the ordeal and live to tell the stories who rewrite history books. Its well known, for example, that the best way to bring a culture to its knees is to destroy the basis of its faith and beliefs. There have been numerous examples of this in human history.

Every culture on Earth started as an indigenous culture, learning how to survive by relying on their intuition and connection to the planet. Spirituality started with our wonder for the unknown we revered those who had the ability to see into its mysteries. Visionaries and intuitives have long been the ones who heal and guide our people to food and shelter. They have been fundamental in keeping our connection to Spirit vital, and our tribes alive.

Whenever a culture wants to gain control over another, however, these are the first people whose power is minimized. They are painted as wicked, evil, and possessed, justifying killing them to protect the people. Tens of thousands of witches have been burned at the stake for possessing knowledge of plant medicines, and for being intuitive.

Marriage, materialism, and unlucky 13.The number thirteen is another example. While once a

sacred number, we now think of it as bad luck. Thirteen is the number of times the moon circles the Earth within a year. The lunar cycle regulates the tides, and womens cycles are known to align with it. Because theyre more psychically open during this time, medicine women have traditionally gathered for moon ceremonies in service to their tribes.

Archeological data shows early tribes revered these feminine powers, and considered them sacred. Most of the idolatry that comes from Mesopotamian times is of females, with very few artifacts of war. Because babies clearly came

from their mothers, it made sense to base a childs lineage on its known mother.

As possession of material things grew in importance, however, more aggressive tribes of-ten started overtaking these gentler ones for their assets. Marriage was then introduced as a way to keep their women chaste, and the names of the pillagers heirs certain. Women were prevented from doing moon ceremonies, and made to feel shame and even face death if they defied these rigid rules.

While we now deeply honor the sanctity of marriage, Friday the 13th is a day to expect calamity, and all buildings are built without a thirteenth floor.

Shaming the shaman.Similarly, many people still fear the word shaman, saying,

Oh, I want to be a healer, but not a shaman shamans are dark. Even today, shamans who object to deforestation of their rain forests are being killed for being possessed by evil spirits because they can go into altered states of consciousness to do healing work.

Energy Medicine is simply the practice of harnessing the forces of Nature for healing purposes. As with any power, it can be abused but its not the power thats evil. Evil lives in the hearts of men and women who have not done their personal work around their own fear, shadow, power and control.

All healing practices originate from indigenous healing arts. Shaman is just a word the Siberians used for their tribal medicine persons. Its important to think about where our sense of its meaning comes from. Are the shamanic arts truly dark or is this just another example of fearful people rewriting history to demonize the sacred?

Pumpkin has been eaten in North America as far back as 9,000 years ago. Pumpkins are harvested and sold in September and October, but generally this American fruit is sold year round as canned puree. If youre sensitive to pumpkin, you can substitute sweet potato for most recipes.

Ive been cooking around my personal food sensitivities for years, and my recipes are now published. Bread-Free Bread will be in stores this November. To celebrate, this month, Im sharing with Austin All Natural readers my recipe for Pumpkin Microwave Mug Cake, which is a small personal-sized cake. Tastes just like pumpkin pie!

As usual this recipe is grain-free, yeast-free, and still cake-licious when made as sugar-free, too!

PUMPKIN MICROWAVE MUG CAKEDRY INGREDIENTS cup almond meal (see note)1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice1 teaspoon baking powder1 tablespoon cane sugar (optional)

WET INGREDIENTS cup liquid egg whites cup canned pure pumpkin

1. In a 20-ounce or larger microwave-proof mug or bowl, stir together the almond meal, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder, and sugar (optional).

2. Using a single-serve or immersion stick blender, blend together well the egg whites and pumpkin.

3. Transfer the pumpkin mixture to the bowl of dry ingredients and mix well.

4. Microwave on high for 3 minutes. (OR split batter into two mini casserole baking dishes, greased and dusted with almond meal. Bake at 375 for 20 minutes.)

5. Let sit for 5 minutes. Serve in the bowl, or remove to add icing or decorations.

6. Serve warm, or let cool. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

NOTE: To make this recipe nut-free, grind cup raw shell-free sunflower seeds into a fine meal with a coffee/spice grinder (or straight blade blender; or mini food processor) to replace the almond meal.

If you see someone in their early thirties with spots of grey hair, you can bet theyre low on copper. Copper deficiencies may also be linked to anemia. Without enough copper in your diet, you may not be able carry the iron necessary for healthy blood.

Get wired.Think of an electrical system. Your house is full of wires,

transferring electricity to all the points in your house where you want to operate some device. All those wires are made of copper, because copper is a better conductor. (Okay, some of you may have old aluminum wires but try to get a permit to remodel, and your house may not pass code.)

Now think of your body, which is also an electrical system. The brain is the master electrical panel connected to the delivery system, the spinal cord, and it requires copper and, just like in your house, aluminum is not good.

Aluminum is poison to the body. Stop drinking from aluminum cans and using aluminum pots and pans! Ever heard of Alzheimers? It can be caused by too much aluminum, and not enough copper.

The greatest concentration of copper is found in the liver and the brain. If your brain doesnt have enough copper, the rest of the body suffers a lack of proper communication.

Green wrist syndrome.As a supplement, copper is one of those trace minerals

that should be taken separately. Foods that are sources of copper include sesame seeds, cashews, non-GMO organic soybeans, and barley.

Some people try to get more copper by wearing copper bracelets, which turn your wrist green. Okay if you like green skin, but the easiest way is to take a liquid copper supplement like colloidal copper.

LONG IN THE TOOTH

You gave it a good shot fillings, more fillings, root canals, the works but the tooth had to come out. You followed the Huggins protocol, probably the safest way to extract a tooth. Now what?

Take up chewing tobacco, and spit through the gap? (Messy.) Paint your face orange and pose for jack o lanterns? (Seasonal, at best.) Make a new tooth out of a Chiclet? (Handy if you visit Mexico, where theyre readily available from street urchins.)

Even if the tooth wasnt easily visible, leaving a gap can cause problems. The tooth above or below it will gradually migrate into the space, affecting your bite pattern.

For replacing a single tooth, options include:r *NQMBOUTNot the ones that get better tips at

gentlemens clubs. Implants are inserted into the old socket where the previous tooth resided, and a crown is placed over them, just like a real tooth. Theyre the most stationary (and most expensive) solution, but usually require building up supporting bone tissue with sterilized bovine or cadaver bone matter. (Side effects may include chewing cud, or binge-watching Walking Dead.) Titanium implants screw into a socket implanted in the jawbone, making them easily replaceable. Porcelain implants are available if you dont want metal, even usually less-reactive titanium, in your body, but theyre one piece and cant be screwed in an out like a light bulb. Five years ago, after short-term planning, my husband (at the time) and I moved to Texas, along with our three children and three pets. It took three very long days. We drove in a caravan halfway across the country in what looked like, on the outside, a simple, peaceful, orderly fashion.

On the inside, stress and fear filled the vehicles. We didnt have jobs lined up, the children had much uncertainty, and better planning would have probably made the move a lot easier. We were going to unfamiliar territory and yet we kept on driving. After arriving at our destination, we settled in and went about living our lives from day to day.

Long story short, after six months living in Texas, I found myself a single mom, facing another change in my life. Yes, I was fearful and I also knew that I had to keep moving forward.

Off to see the Wizard.Whats keeping you from moving forward? You want life

to go as planned, and sometimes it does but other times you get spooked! You get scared and dont want to take the next step, for many reasons that youre really unsure of.

when Garretts on your trail. And I sure as hell told Hickock, never, ever sit with your back to the door in

Deadwood.Think they listened? Hell, no. Most of em hardly ever listen.You take them Earp boys, though. Ol Wyatt, he listened real good. Told him the

Clantons was waitin down at the OK Corral with them cowboys from Texas. Told him dont worry about Ike, hes a coward. Give the scattergun to Holliday and stay out of his way, let them make the first play.

Virgil and Morgan, they didnt listen and got themselves shot, but in his whole life, Wyatt never took a bullet. Couple hit his saddle, couple passed through his clothes, but not a one touched his body. Always said he felt like he was guided, somehow.

And he was. By me.Plenty more like me, of course. Some call us spirits or ghosts, and some of us

get carried away from time to time and put on a show, pop up where people can see us or hear us, get called angels, devils, demons. That little gal in France, the one who whupped the English, Joan whats-her-name? Her voices is what she called us.

The ones who listen best tend to call us spirit guides, or just guides, my own personal preference. Theyre the ones you like to work with. Gets kinda tiresome talkin to folks who dont listen.

Myself, I specialize in working with folks who dont always play by the rules. Outlaws, I reckon youd call em, although most of em have been back and forth on both sides of the law, often as not.

Them Plains Indian tribes was always a favorite. Really took a likin to old Sittin Bull and Crazy Horse. Told Crazy Horse one day if hed ride back and forth in front of the bluecoat cavalry and sing those medicine songs of his, Id make sure not a single bullet hit him. Damn if he didnt do it, and damn if I wasnt good as my word. Cavalry boys shot more than a hundred rounds at him, he never got a scratch.

Told him and Sittin Bull if theyd camp with the Cheyenne near that creek they called the Greasy Grass, that dumbass Custer would ride right in, and they could pick off his Seventh Cav like fish in a barrel. Worked, too.

Gunfighters, though, they was the best. Hardin, Masterson, Bass. Crazy as hoot owls, but damn sure fun to work with, whether they listened or not. Clyde Barrow and that little gal Bonnie? Shot up half of Texas and Oklahoma. Lord, I do miss em, every one of em. Nothin like em anymore.

Gettin as how its so borin, Ive taken to droppin in on folks from time to time, borrow a body for a bit, just to remember what its like. Some ol boy wakes up on fancy sheets, next to a gal wouldnt usually give him the time of day? Thats me, sometimes.

Got a new one to work with, though, one of them televangelists gets people lathered up about their sins, then gets em to give him money. Steals a damn sight more in one weekend than Frank and Jesse stole in their whole lifetimes.

This particular young fella comes from West Texas, small town out past Abilene. Fancy dresser, likes to wear white suits and hand-tooled black boots with pointy toes and turquoise inlays. Right now, hes out in California, gettin ready to preach the gospel in a fancy hotel ballroom filled to the rafters with the faithful, waitin to be saved.

Chandelier in there covers most of the whole dang room, wrought iron and solid crystals, weighs about a ton and theres a earthquake comin.

Reckon I better let him know. Hope he listens. Probably wont, though. Most of em hardly ever listen.

I have a book titled Stories that Must not Die, by Juan Sauvageau. Each story is written in English and Spanish. The Cuddling Ghost is about a disincarnate entity that lived in a home in Santa Elena, Mexico.

The realtor was unable to sell the home, because everyone in the neighborhood knew it was haunted. Out of desperation, the price was radically reduced.

This worked out well for Maria Mendozas parents. They wanted to buy a house, but didnt have much money. Maria was just five when they moved in, and her mother was due to have her second child within a few months.

They all could hear the baby laughing and, at other times, crying. Maria saw this beautiful little spirit stuck within the astral plane, and she loved cuddling him.

A new life.The house had been owned at one time by a midwife. One

evening, a young woman and her lover arrived because she needed help delivering the child. After the baby was birthed, the father took the infant and buried it alive behind the house.

The day Marias madre went into labor was the last day Maria saw her little friend. Senora Mendoza birthed a beautiful baby boy. Maria expressed her joy and gratitude for having a little brother the very same one she had cradled in her arms.

People dont always cross to the other side, or heaven, when they die. Because of circumstances and beliefs at the time of death, they can linger for days, weeks, or even years.

In the 1930s, English physician Edward Bach created a series of thirty-eight flower remedies, prepared from plants found in his native England, to address underlying mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of physical disease.

Edward Bach, the story goes, created a lot of his famous flower essences by becoming so empathic that he picked up patients deep, sometimes unconscious, mental and emotional states. If they were sad, he felt sad angry, he felt angry. (Sounds spiritually noble, but not recommended. Bachs biographer described him as suffering, sometimes greatly from this technique, and he eventually switched to other methods.)

Hed then wander the English countryside until he found a flowering plant he could hold that made him feel better, then catalog symptomology and extract the flowers essence. (Until he researched homeopathy, hed scrape dew off at dawn, apparently having a lot of time on his hands.)

One plant growing in profusion on the meadows, heaths, moors, tors, hedgerows, piccadillies and such of 1930s England was the Wild Rose, a bloom that grew with more carefree, joyful abandon than its carefully cultivated garden-variety cousins.

No grinning allowed.Operative word is joyful. Bachs Wild Rose remedy is for

abandon that may be carefree, but only because all caring of any kind has been abandoned. Apathy and resignation settle in, and theres nothing left to do but bear whatevers brought you to this state of affairs without complaining, since grinning and bearing it is out of the question.

In fact, any solution seems out of the question, like a frog wholl never be kissed, a worn-out boxer who finally just drops his hands and waits for the knockout punch. Throw Wild Rose in the mix for long-term situations relationships, jobs, life itself that all joy has long since left, and now they seem like a long march with no end.

To mix metaphors, theres a light at the end of the tunnel, even if its a train and sometimes it takes a train wreck to jolt you out of apathy. A shot of Wild Rose goes down a lot easier, though.
