An authoritative report by the respectedSwedish Corrosion Institute, following a tenyear real life testing programme, concludesthat, in all environments, 300 series austeniticstainless steel fasteners offer an expectedworking life of 50 years, complying with themedium and normal life expectancy of abuilding as defined in BS EN: 15686.

The performance of a PVC-Uwindow depends on thequality of its components. If the fastener holding thehinge in place fails, thewindow is deemed to havefailed.

Carbon steel and martensiticsteel screws are prone to

corrosion, even when protective coatings havebeen applied. Extensive tests have confirmedthat modified martensitic or nitrided fastenersare prone to failure and are not suitable for usein affixing window hardware.

Recognising this, specifiers are increasinglydemanding that only austenitic stainless steelfasteners are used to fix hardware to PVC-Uframes because 300 series austenitic fastenersprovide the only guarantee of anti-corrosionperformance.
