MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
When we returned to school after the summer holiday, we received the results from last June’s external examinations. Yet
again, students from Traill excelled themselves with some brilliant results. These results have already been published, so I
will not repeat them here, but I would like to mention Palm (Y13) who got the highest mark in Thailand in the AS-Level ICT
examination.
Thank you to all the parents who came to the information meetings which we organized earlier this month; your feedback
was very positive. We are always happy to discuss and explain any aspect of your child’s life at Traill and if there are any
topics which you would like more information on, please inform the school office and we will set up meetings accordingly.
Last year, some parents commented that there were some activities at school which they were unaware of. Acting on this,
we have created a special noticeboard, “Traill This Week” at the front of the school. It has all the information of current
events and activities, so please check it regularly for updates whenever you come to school.
I know that we have a bumper-sized edition of the Newsletter this month, so without further ado, I will sign off and let you
get with reading all that you child has been doing over the last month.
--- Mr Gordon Espley- Jones ---
Principal
I would like to welcome you all back at the start of
another new school year, particularly all the new
students, whom I trust have all settled down well
and have already made many new friends. We also
have a number of new teachers who have joined us
this term and I wish them all a long and successful
career at Traill. They are all very experienced in
their own fields and they form an important
addition to the current teaching staff. You will find
potted biographies of all of the new teachers inside
this copy of the Newsletter.

I am Coach Troy Umaly and I am a Filipino. I am the Director
for Basketball Development at Traill International School. My coaching experience runs for so long now as I have been
coaching for 18 years in the Philippines for various schools
for boys and girls. I am a FIBA (Federacion Internationale’ Basketbol) Certified
Basketball Coach, which means I can coach any national team worldwide that would compete in any FIBA sanctioned
tournament. I am part of the current Philippine Youth Basketball Team which will compete in this upcoming FIBA
Asia 16-Under Basketball Tournament which will be held in Tehran, Iran.
Before I have been part of the Philippine Youth Basketball Team, I was a basketball coach of San Beda College High
School Basketball Team (wherein I was an alumnus and played varsity basketball) which has the most number of
NCAA titles in Philippine NCAA history at 20. I was part of San
Beda’s NCAA team and basketball developmental program which gave me the opportunity to teach young athletes the
fundamentals of the game and at the same time instill good values that would make them winners, not just in basketball,
but also in life. Coming to Traill International School brings so much
challenge and excitement. I am looking forward to so much greater things and achieve greater heights. Hopefully, this
journey would be meaningful and fruitful in a very positive way especially to the school’s student-athletes. I remain
optimistic and humble that we will be producing winners and
develop the school pride into their hearts.
Richard Jones I was born and brought up in Wrexham, North Wales in the UK. I studied at Aston
University in Birmingham, where I was awarded my Bachelor of Science Honours Degree (B.Sc. Hons 2:1). I then went on to take my British Curriculum Teaching
Qualification and was awarded my PGCE at the Glyndwr University of North Wales. My first year of teaching was in Wrexham in the UK. I
then took a year travelling and working in Thailand, and enjoyed Thailand and the Thai Culture so much
that I decided to stay! Since then I have worked in a number of International Schools. I spent 3 years at
Heathfield International School, where I taught in Key
Stage 1 for two years, and then in Key Stage 2 for one year. I then worked at New Sathorn International
School, and most recently at Amnuay Silpa. I have lived in Thailand for 6 years and really enjoy travelling to new places and
experiencing the Thai Culture in my holidays. My hobbies are supporting Liverpool Football Club and training in the gym.
I am really looking forward to working at Traill International School and working with your children.
Marianne Olinares Hello! My name is Marianne Olinares and I was born and raised in the Philippines. I
graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in Social Sciences. I taught ESL to both children and adults in my home country for 4 years before
moving to Thailand in October 2009. Reading, hanging out with friends, going on bike rides, exploring new places, and
trying new food are some of the things I enjoy doing in my spare time. I believe teaching is an incredibly important profession. I chose to work in this field
because I love children and enjoy watching them learn, grow and express
themselves in their own individual ways. I am excited to be a part of Traill International School and look forward to building many positive memories.

academics as well as social lives in order to make them
more confident and esteemed. In 2005, I have been Thai
Social Study Teacher for M.6 at
Wachirawit (Thai School). I
enjoy tutoring students and
helping them building confidence in their ability to achieve , both
academically and socially. In 2011, I taught “Thai Social
Study” in secondary level at Lanna International School. This
position enabled me to create many activities to help students
to realize their full potential.
I am interested in Thai history because it encourages me to
acknowledge my national history
including cultural virtue and wisdom that are all creative and
admirable. It makes me proud of
being Thai and thus, I would like to pass on this knowledge to my
students with a hope that they will be learning and appreciating Thai
history and being aware of Thai values.

RAINFORESTS & TRIANGLES
Year 4 have been busy
since returning back
after the Summer
holiday. This term we
have been learning about
rainforests. To take a
closer look at some
rainforest animals we
went on a class visit to
Siam Ocean World where
we got to see poisonous
frogs, many different
snakes and a tarantula!
In maths we have been
looking at the properties
of the different triangles:
equilateral, isosceles,
right-angled and scalene
triangles. We had fun
constructing triangles
using straws and
masking tape.

Welcome to our Year 6 Classes Year 6A
In yar 6A we have been visiting the kindergarten
every week to act as buddies for the children.
It is the year 6’s job to
support the younger children with their work
and make them feel safe and comfortable knowing
other children in the school. During one of our
trips to the kindergarten we helped the children be
aware of road safety. We walked around the school
making sure the children were listening out for any
danger and crossing the
road when it was safe. We then went into the
kindergarten bike area and practiced putting on
seat belts and driving safely. The year 6
children loved being good role models and the
kindergarten children enjoyed their time with
their new friends.
Year 6B
It has been a great start to the year for our new
Year 6B!
We have already got super stars, as each
week a student is chosen
for their successes and positive attitude to
learning… We have also been
preparing for our Role Model Class Assembly on
Friday 20th September. Our students have been
writing biographies on famous people who
inspire them; and drawing and painting their
portraits.

One of our main topics this half term
has been investigating and researching Rivers. We combined this topic with our
art work and took a visit to our local Klong.
It was a very hot afternoon, but the
children were a credit to the school with their excellent behaviour and the
work there produced showed great skill!

ELECTRICITY In Science class this term class 2b has been learning about electricity. They have learnt that electricity is dangerous and they must take care
when using it. Also, the children looked at different ways we use electricity such as mains power or battery power. The children built simple circuits to see how electricity flows. They tested different materials to see if they would conduct electricity or not. This was great fun and now
the children have a better understanding of how their flash light works.

PLANETARIUM TUESDAY On September 17th 2013 Year 5 enjoyed a morning visit to the Bangkok Planetarium. It was a
memorable day and the first visit to this facility for most of our children. Before the visit, the word Planetarium meant little or nothing for most of them.
The Bangkok Planetarium is the oldest planetarium in Thailand and is operated directly by the Ministry of Education. We first visited the planetarium dome, an impressive structure 20m in diameter and 13m
high, with a capacity of 450 seats. We were the only ones there early in the morning and our students had the fantastic opportunity to enjoy a rare “private” star show. The Planetarium uses a
sophisticated Mark IV Zeiss projector – an imposing instrument which everybody admired – the first of its type to be installed in South East Asia. When the lights dimmed and the stars came out, we left our
world behind and became lost in a galaxy of stars and planets. Our students really enjoyed the 40 minute-star show, which gave them highlights on various topics related to space and space
exploration. We were all wide-eyed and taking everything in: orbits, constellations, quasars, black holes, etc. The only complaint was the FREEZING temperature inside the dome. Well, space is a cold
place after all…
Our next destination was the main building, where our students had an opportunity to play with various
machines demonstrating forces, mass, sound, electricity and other Science-related topics. A huge stainless-steel track with a metal ball (see picture) immediately caught the attention of the whole
class. I was amazed how quick our students were in operating the levers and rotating the wheels to roll the huge metal ball along the tracks. Apparently the deafening BOOMS! provoked by the ball any
time it landed on a lower level did not bother them at all!
After a much-needed lunch break, we headed straight to the Aquarium, where our students were given an opportunity to see their favourite sea creatures: sea turtles, tropical fish, sea urchins, stars
and aquatic plants. Finally, the Museum of Science trumped our experience that day, with numerous interactive displays, multimedia and fun-filled activities.
All in all, it was a successful and rewarding experience for the whole class. The displays and the show really helped our students understand what space is like and how planets orbit around the Sun.
Following this visit, I have noticed an increased interest of our students in Science and Space, which is
also our topic for this term. We highly recommend this trip to other classes too, as the Planetarium is a unique structure in Thailand, easily accessible, well organised and offering a very affordable
experience to all visitors.
Just one word of advice: get there early in the morning, before the big school groups start coming in!

It’s been a really busy start to the
year for our Sixth Form students;
they have already heard talks from
Nagoya University, Japan,
Newcastle University in the UK and
Blue Mountain School of Hospitality
Management from Australia.
In addition to that we welcomed
one of our alumni, Poon, back to
Traill to talk to the students about
studying in the US. We also had the
pleasure of impromptu visits from
a few more of the ‘Old Guard’ such
as Mudmee, A, Renata, Airi, Nuang
and Poob! As always, it was a
pleasure to catch up with former
students and hear how well they
are all doing.
I have been delighted at the
conduct of the Sixth Form students
so far this year and I have to say,
they are looking exceptionally
smart! Still a way to go if we are
going to crack the punctuality
issue, however, but definitely cause
for optimism. Keep up the good
work guys!
In the next newsletter you’ll be
hearing from our newly appointed
Prefects so watch this space!
Finally, I am delighted to confirm
the details for a huge Sixth Form
event that Traill will be hosting in
late November! The event is called
Innovate and will bring together
250 sixth form students from some
of the top international schools in
Bangkok to address some of the
21st Century challenges facing
Thailand and Bangkok. There will
also be two extremely high profile
guest speakers to open the event.
Innovate will be held at the luxury
5 star Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel
by the Chao Phraya River, so it is a
setting that befits the caliber of
students and honourable guests
taking part. We are extremely

THE POPPY APPEAL On September 11th, secondary
students listened to a
presentation by Mr. David Haddon,
from the Royal British Legion
Poppy Appeal.
Using an exciting and information-
packed PowerPoint, Mr. Dave
explained the history of the poppy
appeal, and explained why the
little red flower has become a
symbol of remembrance for all
soldiers who died fighting for
their country.
We will be selling poppies later in
the term at school, and encourage
all our students and parents to
buy and wear a poppy. Money used
from the sale of poppies goes to
help disabled servicemen.
THE GIFT OF HAPPINESS FOUNDATION The whole school enjoyed a show by Clown Eckie
(alias Eddie Haworth) on the afternoon of
September 4th.
Beginning with a talk about the history of
clowning, Eddie gradually transformed from an
ordinary person into Clown Eckie, as he put on
his costume and make-up in front of the
audience.
He then entertained the school with a range of
classic clown skits and tricks, frequently
involving members of the audience in his
escapades.
The day had been declared a non-uniform day
with the theme of COLOUR. Those students who
chose to participate paid 50 baht for the
privilege.
15000 baht was raised and a cheque presented
to Eddie by Mr. Gordon, Principal of Traill
International School. The money will be used by
Eddie’s Gift of Happiness Foundation, which
works to bring some happiness to the lives of
poor and under-privileged children living in the
more remote regions of Thailand.
The school has adopted this charity for the
coming year and we will be exploring further
ways we can assist them in this important work.

PUNCTUALITY Our efforts to improve the punctuality of secondary
students continue. We are using a range of rewards
and sanctions to encourage punctuality because we
believe it is important that students arrive at school
on time each morning
The Tutor Class with the best punctuality record for
the term will get a pizza lunch paid for by the school.
At present Class 7A is leading the competition,
followed by YR13; at the bottom of the table are Class
8A and finally Class 9B, both of whom have a number
of students who are frequently late to school.
Individual students with a perfect record for
punctuality at the end of the term will get a
certificate from the school. Universities and
employers value punctuality highly, and these
certificates will attest to the reliability of the
students concerned.
Unfortunately a number of students continue to
arrive late on a regular basis and have had to copy
out a 500-word essay about punctuality, which
hopefully will help them ubnderstand why it is an
important attribute to acquire. A few students have
even had to do a Friday detention because they have
turned up late six times already!
However most students are making a real effort to
get to school on time, and we are very appreciative
of the support for this initiative many parents are
giving us.

In order to support our students in accomplishing internships even before they enter the college life, school has started providing work placements. The number of students interested in internship has increased sharply this year.
Students are chosen on the basis of merit. I am very happy to note that 6 students successfully completed their internship during summer holidays in 2013.
Thanks to Mr.Robert who is instrumental in setting up of this facility in our school.
Importance of internship
Besides getting a foot in the
door with a potential
employer and looking good
on a résumé, internships
have other advantages:
• The opportunity to "test
drive" a career
• Chances to network
• Establishing relationships
with mentors
• Possible college credit or
certification
• An introduction to the
field's culture and etiquette
• Accumulating new skills
• Gaining a "real world"
perspective on an
occupation

Following are the opinions of interns
My work experience was both very educational and challenging. We (the three of us) worked for an architecture firm called 'Design Bube'. There we learnt how to use
Google sketch-up and Photoshop, which will be needed for us to work with. At 'Design Bube' we helped them on a project called 'Double Tree' by The Hilton hotel in
Nottingham, our duty was to contact the suppliers in order to obtain samples of thematerials needed to create a presentation.
Organizing the presentation/material boards. Creating 3-D objects in Google sketch-up (to scale) and in Photoshop. In conclusion,
it was both entertaining and educational as the experience
had taught me about the reality of punctuality, duty and responsibilities.
Thomas - Year 12 SuperRich1965 was the perfect place to do an internship as the whole world is revolves around
money what better way to be able to understand the whole process of how the currency exchange works. It was great to be able to talk to the people who work there and to know how
the system works. Although we were not able to touch any money apart from our own, we learnt a great deal about the process of currency exchange and did not regret a single moment
of it.
During the course of the three weeks we spent working there I can
honestly say that we really did not do much, other than give people their queue numbers. However, this did not really matter as it was a great
experience to be able to know what it feels like to experience real working life and to meet so many people. This improved our social skills as we
talked to each and every customer who walked through the doors of the company. Our job was simple, but as Bill Gates once said, “Flipping burgers is not beneath your
dignity. Your Grandparents once had a different word for burger flipping: They called it opportunity.”
