Greetings to all our readers, including our South Australian Members, and those in other States across the country. In fact, greetings too, to those who are not KSC Members, but find interest in reading Knight Life. I hope you enjoy it.State Council has been involved in several activities, to say the least, since mid-May, when the last edition of Knight Life went to press. This has been to the extent that I have written separate articles about the more important matters, in order to provide you with more details of those activities.

State Chairman's Report

Such activities included visits to Emmaus, Edwardstown / Plympton, and Para Region Branch meetings. Along with my wife, Denise, it has also been our pleasure to attend the Emmaus Dinner at the Tonsley Hotel, the Mt Barker / Strathalbyn Dinner at the Mt Barker Golf Club, and the Hectorville / Tranmere Dinner. There is further reference to presentations at the Emmaus Dinner elsewhere in this edition. All three dinners were very good evenings, and it was great to be part of the camaraderie at such events.

Triennial Conference and National and NSW Centenary Celebrations —

Seven SA Members, including the Supreme Knight, and five of our wives travelled to Sydney, where the Members attended the Conference. Except for the two delegates, expenses for others attending were financed by each Member. However, there were two significant motivations for State Council to attend – (a) the Centenary, and (b) to see Bro Cooper receive his award (referred to below).

All attended the Conference Dinner and participated in a bus trip to visit the burial sites at Macquarie and Rookwood Cemeteries, of our KSC Founders, Joseph Patrick Lynch and Patrick Joseph Minahan. Most also attended the four Masses, one which included Vespers for the Feast of Mary Help of Christians.

Whilst space doesn’t allow me to tell you of all the activities over the weekend of May 24 – 26, the key points were:• The keynote address by His Excellency,

Most Rev Adolfo Yllana, Apostolic Nuncio in Australia, where he referred to the challenges of the early Knights and to the similar challenges we have today. We also heard speeches on Friday and Saturday nights, by the Hon Greg Donnelly BEc MIR MLC (ALP), who gave the Minahan Oration, and by Dr Kevin Donnelly AM, on Freedom of Speech / Religion, and Catholic Education in the next century of KSC. These were most interesting.

• As it was a Triennial Conference, there was a changing of the guard. Bro Brian Cooper stood down as the Supreme Knight after three years in the position and was replaced by Perth’s Bro George Sekulla. Bro Vince Granahan (QLD) is the new Deputy Supreme Knight, and Bro Ian Fleetwood, a past SA State Chairman, became the new National Secretary. We congratulate all these Knights on accepting their new responsibilities at this higher level.

• The award on the Saturday night was to Bro Brian Cooper who, in addition to receiving a medal for having been Supreme Knight, was also awarded the Knight of Honour for his activities over many years. A further item in this Knight Life tells the story of his dedication to the Order. Congratulations Brian.

• Significant discussion centred around a new Vision Statement, Freedom of Speech and Religion, National Projects, and Future Order Development.

South Australia secured the right to hold the National Conference in April or May 2022, in conjunction with our Centenary celebrations.

Training, Future Direction and Development, Adelaide:

It was most pleasing to see 38 Members attend this presentation on Sat, June 15 by the National Development Officer, Bro John Hennessy. It was most successful. John drove from Melbourne to conduct the training for South Australia.

Following his presentation, 14 Members enjoyed lunch with Bro John at the Highway Inn, where we were able to discuss the training, and what it means to us, and how we can act on this. The major point of the morning was to ask ourselves whether we are ‘Caretakers of Branches and of the State’ or are we ‘Leaders’ – a very valid question. Further, the presentation looked at what can be done to assist our Parishes and Clergy in

The Pachyderm in the Parlour

F rom Mgr Rob

The forthcoming Plenary Council cannot afford to ignore what is for the Australian Church the pachyderm with a prominent proboscis in the parlour or, if you prefer, the elephant in the room.

Since we rightly, after Vatican II, stopped offering the threat of serious sin as the main reason for attending Sunday Mass, we have not proclaimed widely encouragingly and consistently inspiring positive pastoral reasons for celebrating the Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith life. As a consequence two or three generations of adults, including teachers have failed to grasp that to enter into discipleship needs a sense of belonging to the eucharistic faith community. Do this in memory of me is seen as an incidental aspect of faith life.

Movements and groups dedicated to justice and compassion, if they are not linked to the wider Church, are not destined to bequeath their spirit to oncoming generations.

Immanuel Lutheran College at Novar Gardens in Adelaide has painted on its buses this aphorism: Be part of something that becomes part of you. This succinct saying explains well why our Sunday Mass community is an indispensable feature of our Christian life. To be part of the community requires first and foremost out presence. It entails greeting and being greeted. Further opportunities of belonging are offered by the ministries of reading, children's liturgy, distributing Communion, taking up collections etc. Not everyone can enter in to these of course.

these days of reducing numbers of Priests, how we look at getting other parishioners to assist, particularly newcomers to our Parish, and the effect this may have on our membership. I recommend each Branch consider these questions more and develop a plan to assist them in addressing the issues of support and membership. I will provide copies of Bro John’s presentation to each Branch.

History research:Since the last edition of Knight Life,

some progress has been made in moving towards the writing phase of the History. Firstly, we currently have a solicitor reviewing a proposed contract to write our history. Secondly, I am very grateful to Bros Ian Fleetwood and Dino Persico who have recently formed a ‘Fundraising’ committee to source funds for this project.

This committee will look at many options of fundraising from dinners and grants to sponsorship and donations. Bro Ian, who heads this committee, is keen to have Branch Members with associated background expertise, to assist them.

I thank the committee for their enthusiastic approach. Some Branches and an individual have already donated, but, on behalf of the History sub-committee, I’m asking Branches if they are able to commit to donating, by way of emailing our State office, a given amount for each of these next two financial years. Those who have already committed to this project following my previous email to all Branches, are named elsewhere in Knight Life, as a way of thanking them for their generosity.

Northern Region Conference:And finally from me, by the time you

receive this issue of Knight Life, we will have held this Conference at Port Pirie. I trust we will be able to tell you about the success of this in the next issue.

For now, keep warm for Spring is nigh.Don Campbell — SA State Chairman

The essential step in being part of something that becomes part of us is to be welcomed when you attend and missed when you are unable to go. Many parishes are very assiduous in having welcoming groups. It is also very helpful for the children to have their own liturgy for the first part of the Mass. They can then become part of something that becomes part of them.

One hopes that the Plenary Council will initiate an Australia-wide educational campaign in parishes and schools over the next four or five years that will fill a very obvious lacuna in Catholic pastoral life.

It takes a long time to turn around an ocean liner.

Mgr Rob Egar — KSC Chaplain

Looking after my neighbour …

The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?'

But ... the good Samaritan reversed the question: 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?

Step 1: Opening prayer — From the Order’s Prayers

Step 2: Readings on the ThemeThe Spirit affirms us by putting into us gifts to build others up; the successful result is what is meant by ‘spiritual fruit’. Affirmation is a positive act that helps to give confidence and a sense of being supported. It gives voice to goals and hopes, and it strengthens resolve.

We must believe that, despite appearances, the Holy Spirit is working in the world and makes it progress.

How many new discoveries, not only in the study of nature but also in the field of morality and social life!

A text of Vatican II says that the Holy Spirit is at work in the evolution of the social order of the world (Gaudium et

Spes, 26). It is not only evil that grows but good does too, with the difference being that evil eliminates itself, ends with itself, while the good accumulates itself, remains.

Certainly there is much chaos around us: moral, political, and social chaos. The world still has great need of the Spirit of God. For this reason we must not tire in invoking him with the words of the Psalm: "Send forth your Spirit, Lord, and renew the face of the earth! (Father Raniero Cantalamessa, Pentecost 2007)

Session 7The Holy Spirit in our TimeFormation ProgramTheme: Source of Affirmation and Direction The Holy Spirit exercises a role of teaching and memory ...

the Holy Spirit doesn't bring a different teaching, but makes that of Jesus alive and active, so that the passage of time does not erase it or make it fade. He grafts this teaching into our hearts, helps us to interiorise it, making it become part of us, flesh of our flesh. At the same time, the Spirit prepares the heart so that it is able to truly receive the words and example of the Lord. (Pope Francis May 15, 2016)

Step 3: Allow a few moments reflective silence.

Step 4: Scripture ReadingAnd when Jesus had been baptised he at once came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. And suddenly there was a voice from heaven,‘This is my Son, the Beloved, my favour rests on him.’ (Matthew 3: 16 – 17)

In all your prayer and entreaty keep praying in the Spirit on every possible occasion. Never get tired of staying awake to pray for all God’s holy people, and pray for me to be given an opportunity to open my mouth and fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel … (Ephesians 6: 18 – 19)

Step 5: Reflection (5 Mins)

Step 6: Sharing (10 Mins)

• Straight after telling of Jesus’ baptism the first three Gospels immediately recount Jesus going into the desert for forty days into a time of prayer and to be tempted by the Devil. Is there a link between the affirmation and the presence of the Holy Spirit Jesus received at his baptism and the way in which he met the challenges the devil offered him?

• Can you recall times when, on reflection, it was the confidence of God’s presence that helped you cope with challenges in your life?

Step 7: Conclusion

We pray together: Direct, O Lord, we beseech you, all our actions by your holy inspirations, and carry them on by the assistance of your grace, so that every prayer and work of ours may always begin from you, and by you be happily ended. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

History Fund Raising SubcommitteeTwo years ago, it was decided by State Council that as a way of promoting the Order and maybe obtaining new members we should look at producing a book setting out our history for release at the end of our 100-year celebrations.

Much work has been undertaken since then and recently our State Chairman Bro Don Campbell has written to Branch Chairmen and Secretaries outlining our progress. Funding is a major issue and a subcommittee to specifically look at this has been suggested. At present this committee needs Members other than those on State Council or the History Committee to have input regarding this important matter.

Bros Ian Fleetwood (Past State Chairman) and Dino Persico (State Treasurer) have agreed to act, but we need three or four more Members to volunteer for this important job. It is anticipated that initially it will involve a monthly meeting of one to one and a half hours in the morning at the State office. Once planning is underway it is hoped that all Members and Branches will be involved.

If any member wishes to join this Subcommittee, please ring Bro Ian Fleetwood (0414 252 434) or Catherine Wiggett (8371 3301)

Step 1: Opening prayer — From the Order’s Prayers

Step 2: Readings on the Theme

In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, and the Spirit of the Lord brooded over the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2)

We conclude from this that the universe already existed in the moment when the Spirit intervened, but it was formless and dark, chaos.

It is after his action that the creation assumes precise contours; light is separated from darkness, dry land from the sea, and everything takes on a definite shape.

Thus, it is the Holy Spirit who transforms the creation from chaos into cosmos, who makes it something beautiful, ordered, polished (cosmos comes from the same root as cosmetic and it means beautiful!), he makes a world, in the double sense of this word. Science teaches us today that this process went on for billions of years, but the Bible — with its simple and image-filled language — wants to tell us that the slow evolution toward life and the present order of the world did not happen by chance, following blind material impulses. It followed, rather, a project that the Creator inserted in it from the beginning.

Session 8The Holy Spirit in our TimeFormation ProgramTheme: Source of Unity and Cohesion

The Holy Spirit renews all things: He renews our heart, our life, and makes us live differently, but in a way that takes up the whole of our life. You cannot be a Christian of pieces, a part time Christian. (Pope Francis)

God’s creative action is not limited to the initial instant; he is always in the act of creating. Applied to the Holy Spirit, this means that he is always the one who transforms chaos into cosmos, that is, he makes order out of disorder, harmony out of confusion, beauty out of deformity, youth out of age. This occurs on all levels: in the macrocosm as in the microcosm, that is, in the whole universe as in the individual person. (Fr Raniero Cantalamessa, Pentecost, 2007)

In his homily at the Opening Mass (Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit) for the November 2018 Plenary Meeting of the Australian Bishop’s Conference, Archbishop Coleridge referred to the Bernini window depicting the Holy Spirit in St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. (We have already referred to this window in Session Four.) He drew attention to the fact that the artist deliberately tried to express the work of the Holy Spirit in all aspects of life and how that is often in contrasting the opposites. He pointed out that this is obvious when we look more closely at the central image — the dove.

The dove is a very common image of the Holy Spirit in Sacred Scripture but Bernini’s image has a unique feature. Here the beautiful white dove is hovering and gently descending but the feet are extended and have the appearance of eagle talons! The peaceful dove has been given the feet of a raptor!

Step 3: Allow a few moments reflective silence.

Step 4: Scripture Reading

Keep as your pattern the sound teaching you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

With the help of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, look after that precious thing given in trust. (2 Timothy 1: 13,14)

So if in Christ there is anything that will move you, any incentive in love, any fellowship in the Spirit, any warmth or sympathy — I appeal to you, make my joy complete by being of a single mind, one in love, one in heart and one in mind.

Nothing is to be done out of jealousy or vanity; instead out of humility of mind everyone should give preference to others, everyone pursuing not selfish interests but those of others. (Philippians 2:1 – 4)

Step 5: Reflection (5 Mins)

Step 6: Sharing (10 Mins)

• What do you think the words ‘humility of mind’ in the second Scripture Reading means?

• What causes disunity in the Church?

• How can we address this?

Step 7: Conclusion

We pray together: Spirit of wisdom and understanding, enlighten our minds to perceive the mysteries of the universe in relation to eternity. Spirit of right judgment and courage, guide us and make us firm in our baptismal decision to follow Jesus’ way of love. Spirit of knowledge and reverence, help us to see the lasting value of justice and mercy in our everyday dealings with one another.May we respect life as we work to solve problems of family and nation, economy and ecology. Spirit of God, spark our faith, hope and love into new action each day.Fill our lives with wonder and awe in your presence which penetrates all creation. Amen

Branch ReportsEMMAUS

On Jan 17, 2019, the KSC Emmaus Branch Committee met to discuss the year's (2019) program and functions. The new Knights Leaflet was agreed to be printed and given out at all KSC functions, and at Emmaus parish functions. The financial report as of Aug 31, 2018 was tabled and accepted. Due to the excellent sales of the wines, thanks primarily to the efforts of our Chairperson Bro Peter McCarthy, there was still sufficient funds to carry on the functions as agreed for the 2019 year.

At the Feb 21 meeting there were 9 members and guest Bro Andy Tamassy. The new KSC Emmaus Branch Brochure which details the aims of the Knights and to be used as a promotional item to enhance the awareness of the Knights to the general public, especially in the Emmaus Parish, and an abbreviated version will therefore be included in the Parish ‘Welcome Pack’ for all new parishioners. The Treasurer announced the Branch was still financial, and it was decided to donate to the ‘Village of Hope’ Charity. Discussions were held to advance the year's events, including the May Dinner at the Tonsley Hotel, with admission prices remaining the same, speakers for the Ladies and Men's Dinners, and speakers for the Wine and Cheese dinner. Bro Tamassy announced the State KSC website will be introduced to the Emmaus Branch at the next meeting, and Bro Don Campbell is the new State Chairman, with himself as the Deputy Chairperson. He advised that recruitment is still the main focus of the State Council.

The Mar 2 Emmaus Parish Youth BBQ, organised by the KSC Emmaus Branch, was well attended at Colonel Light Gardens, even though the weather was inclement. The Youth BBQ was deemed a great success by all, and more were being considered during the year.

The Meeting on Mar 21 welcomed 8 members on a cold and wet evening. It was noted that there was still a healthy balance in the Bank, made possible mainly by the selling of more wines. The list of the 2019 Social Program was tendered and approved by the members. A new ‘45 Club’ was investigated to raise more funds. Members were asked for suggestions to enliven future Dinners (Annual, Men's and Women's), and encourage more attendees at these and other functions.

The May 2 meeting saw 9 people attending, including guest Bro Don Campbell from the State Office. There was discussion on Robert Fitzgerald who has talked about the future, temporal and spiritual future of the Catholic Church, about moving away from clergy leadership to the power of the congregation. The upcoming Plenary Council was discussed, with the view that the views of the Parishes should be abided by the Clergy hierarchy.

The Emmaus Branch donated to the KSC Country Development Fund, after a talk by Bro Don, who also talked about the State Council and the Plenary Council where all Knights should have a say at those meetings.

The Annual Dinner was held on May 16 and was attended by 65 persons, with great entertainment.

On June 16 The KSC Emmaus Branch presided over the Parish BBQ, cooking for over 200 people attending, at the St Thomas School grounds. The day was very pleasant and all had a great time by all accounts.

The June 20 meeting had 9 members plus Bro Andy Tamassy. The main discussion was on the Ladies Luncheon for July 7 with menu and guest speaker, Hon Caroline Power MP.

The July 7 Ladies Luncheon was attended by some 50 people, and the guest speaker, Hon Carolyn Power MP, Assistant Minister for Domestic and Family Violence Prevention, and Member for Elder. It was a great success, with the Member talking candidly about the issue and what the Government is doing to address some of these, including some radical changes for the Police and shelters. She also commented on how, at this Luncheon, it was good to see the reversal of gender stereotyping, with the KSC members doing the serving, cleaning and washing up.

Following several discussions as several of its meetings, The KSC Emmaus Branch analysed what it was doing and what more could it do. Overall, the KSC Emmaus Branch was seen by its members as very viable, although new members were always sought and welcomed. The Branch was considered by the Parish as being well respected in the Parish community. More visibility and recognition of its aims, both in the Parish community and other areas, is required, and strategies will be considered in the future meetings.

WOODVILLE / WEST TORRENSOur July Branch Meeting had to be

deferred by a week, but we were pleased to welcome Bro Mike Boyle to it. When a visitor attends it adds interest and broader discussions and debates.

Our current series of Club 45 has just concluded and preparations are now underway to draw the next series at the August Branch Meeting.

Our Branch is looking to assist the History Committee with sponsorship towards producing the Order History.

We held a very successful Branch midyear luncheon on Sun, July 7. Again we were pleased to have Bro Mike Boyle and his wife, Clare, join us for this very social gathering.

It was good to have Bro David Cunningham and his brother and Brian’s mum Eva, join us for the luncheon. Both have helped our Branch over many years.

We have a number of frail and aging members in need of prayerful support. In addition many of our women folk are also in need of our prayers.

Continued from the previous page — DERNANCOURT

Our Branch members and parishioners of St Pius X were saddened by the passing of our much loved Branch Secretary John Boddington on Sat, July 6, 2019.

JB as we referred to him, was a Member of the Knights since Apr 1, 1981, a continuous service of 38 years. He was initiated into the North East Branch which was based in the Newton area after being nominated by Bro Pat Marlow, also of Newton. Due to his business as Managing Director of the North East Tennis Company he was a very successful Tennis Instructor teaching young students and children the craft of tennis. JB was unable to be involved in the Branch as much as he would like after spending summer evenings teaching droves of kids on the courts in the Highbury area where he and his wife Fran and his children lived. Newton Branch was closed down in early 1990’s, but John faithfully continued his Membership.

It was not until 2009 that John came and became involved in the Dernancourt Branch. We remember how he faithfully attended Mass at St Pius X always in his pearly white sneakers, either on his way to or from the tennis coaching he was successful in. When he slowed down and had more time to support our Branch it wasn’t long before JB was appointed Branch Secretary in 2011 and took over from Bro Don Brown.

From that time on he supported every Branch Chairman and Members in a truly memorable way by going over and above his Secretarial duties and directing traffic in organisation of any task the Branch took on. He arranged enough Members to continue the netball BBQ’s fundraising event every

summer Friday evening in Windsor Gardens. There was an unenviable task of ordering and picking up the sausages, onions, tomatoes and bread for our BBQ’s. Thousands of dollars have been raised with all the proceeds going to the Vinnies here at Dernancourt. Thanks to JB for all these arrangements.

JB sent timely emails to all our Members advising of all our functions, meetings and what was required to run

our successful Branch here at Dernancourt. He was always first at the opening of the hall or shed as well as providing refreshments to enable Members to share their friendships after monthly meetings.

Over many years the Knights have been involved in Vocational Interviews at the Colleges of OLSH at Enfield, St Thomas More at Salisbury Downs and Mercedes at Springfield. John and his fishing partner Eugene (Fishhooks) McEwen would travel together and use their expertise in training Year 10 students for future interviews the students would probably encounter. Many dozens of students have received guidance in their future lives from John Boddington.

There were many notable Tributes in the Advertiser in the past week from The Knights, Tennis Clubs and Coaching associations. They said: “He was a valued coach, respected player, administrator and Tournament Director”.

Our late member Bro Ian (Wally) Wallace encouraged us to play 10 pin bowls on a social basis at Ingle Farm and JB was the first to be involved. Then the summer Night Owls at Modbury Bowling Club was started where we had great unsuccessful fun every Thursday evening.

VALE Bro John Boddington

After a few years JB’s legs slowed him down and he had to give it away, but he then became our Spiritual Advisor and shared in our social encounters after the game. We would have a couple of frothys and JB might enjoy a red. We have had recent success this last season with more wins under the Captainship of Jack Gill. So now our Spiritual Advisor is in the right place to send us the best spiritual advice.

After spending his school days at Marist Brothers Alberton he was destined to be a member of Port Adelaide Football Club and now Port Power. He passed away a happy man last Saturday week, a few hours after hearing the Power had thrashed the Crows by 10 goals.

JB, Your family and friends, our Branch Members, parishioners at St Pius X, and those who knew you well, loved you and your quirky sardonic wit will be remembered.

May you rest in peace in Gods care forever. And don’t forget, “Go Crabbing” Brother.

KADINAWelcome to our regular readers — here’s

hoping you are all well and not suffering too much from the cold.

I’ve been informed that I should keep the report brief but informative, seeing as we won’t be home for a few days and the report is due today. So, I’m not sure if this will be brief or informative or both — I’ll leave that to you, the readers, to decide.

Firstly, our parish has welcomed our new priest, Fr Matthew Newman, and as Knights we have, hopefully, made him feel at home in his new area. We have also let him know that he can rely on our support when necessary.

Secondly, our Branch has donated a supply of sausages toward our monthly Vinnies BBQs, run for the volunteers who do such wonderful work at the Family Centre

or Shop and for the Vinnies Conference, supporting those in need.

Supporting or visiting other Branches is also one of our aims. My wife, Laura, and I were able to attend the Mt Barker Branch’s Annual Dinner in May. The Members there made us feel welcome, the meal was enjoyable, the guest speaker informative, and the camaraderie, as usual, friendly.

Our next achievement was, at our June meeting, to hold this year’s beginning rounds of the 150 Club draws for April, May and June. (Results to come at a later date —not home, remember!) We also donated to Star of the Sea Home for the Aged, as well as to four local causes, and the RFDS. Yes, we are at it again, giving — with love.

I mentioned earlier in the report that our Branch offered Fr Newman our support which he was pleased to accept. The presbytery was in need of some maintenance work, so some of us are working with parishioners preparing and painting a room or two and part of the hall way, along with some other maintenance tasks we are able to manage. Some Members also went to Bute and Snowtown churches with him as a reconnaissance visit. (Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?)

Finally (yes, I’m there already), I was under the impression that retirement was a time for rest and recreation after the years of committed work done. Well somehow, I don’t seem to find many spare days for doing things around our home or just veging out as our younger generation refer to it. It seems that Laura and I have to book time on our calendar of events to take time out just for us.

Remember, Jesus walks with us on our life journey, and when times are tough and getting us down, he carries us through them. Enjoy the good things which come your way over the next few weeks.

HECTORVILLE/TRANMEREOur June meeting had to be relocated

to the small room at the back of the St Joseph’s Catholic Church due to the Tranmere Hall being used by other parties. As usual, only 6 Members attended; however, the good is that even in these cold/wet miserable months of winter the Bottle Drive Team still finds time to go out and collect bottles and cans. This month, $28.00 was their total. The sausage sizzle held on Sun, May 19 made a profit of $123.20.

The Parish Family Dinner held on Fri, May 31 was a huge success with 107 guests attending. General feedback from the guests — the meal and the whole evening were notably enjoyed by all. The profit from this event ($750) was donated to St Vincent de Paul Society. On behalf of the Branch Council Bro Mike Boyle and I would like to thank all the volunteers who assisted in setting up the tables and chairs in the Hall during the afternoon and also thanks to everybody who helped during the evening with the registration, distribution of the food, washing up and general cleaning — a job well done.

Bro Mike and I attended the Training Day at the Pines on Jun 15 along with many other Members from various Branches. I’m sure there will be a report from the State Chairman in the next issue of Knight Life, so I won’t say anything more about it here.

Our July meeting yielded a total of 5 Members with 1 apology. Bro Mike Corcoran (our oldest member of 93) informed us prior to the meeting that he will no longer be able to attend our sessions at Tranmere as he has been transferred to the Pines Lodge at Plympton. To Mike, we wish all the best at your new residence — thank you for all your help and contributions in the past, God bless from all of us at Tranmere.

This month the Bottle Team managed to collect $76.30 for their booty, while the sausage sizzle team made a profit of $161.70 from their cook-off at the Church on Jun 23.

Bro Mike Boyle informed us that work will begin soon on the Memorial Garden at the rear of the Tranmere Church which will include planting of low level ground cover (for low maintenance purposes) and later the sale of memorial plots will be offered to the parishioners at a cost of $200 each. A sample plot marker will be prepared for viewing prior to sale in the Parish.

Lottery books were handed out at the meeting and members were reminded to return them on or before the next meeting on Wed, Aug 7.

Brian Cooper –

A Knight of Honour Bro Brian was my boss when I worked for the Knights. At the time he was State Chairman, having nominated for a third term in that position. I was amazed at his dedication and appreciated his easy-going nature, a nature that masked his resolve that the Knights would change whatever had to be changed to ensure the continuance of the Order. At the same time, he was passionate about recording the history of the Knights in time for the centenary in 2022. Even in 2008, Brian was urging the Order to publicise its role in the work of church in the state. He believes that our future lies in taking up the challenge and example set by the founding Knights.

Brian next ventured into National affairs when he Joined the National Executive in 2013. He was appointed Deputy Supreme Knight and, in 2015, Supreme Knight, a position he has just relinquished.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Brian has continued to work hard at Branch and State levels, He is a regular guest at State Council and a mentor to anybody who could benefit from his valuable experience. I have certainly benefitted from his knowledge and experience when I was State Executive Officer from 2008 to 2011. Brian was my reporting officer in his role as State Chairman.

Brian worked full time while he was overseeing the State Council and the State Office. He also found time to travel interstate to KSC National events as a delegate and time to regularly attend the Tennis Championships in Melbourne each January.

I am delighted to have been one of the State Council that unanimously approved the award and congratulate Brian on his investiture. He may be well advised to rest up for a while, but I am sure he won’t.

MT BARKER / STRATHALBYNHello Brothers SA wide. As I stated

previously there are not many places on earth that can match the Autumn of Adelaide Hills: sensational even though we stopped for a few days to have our prayers for rain answered. Trust our rural colleagues started the new growing season with some precipitation.

Been a busy period for Members of Mt Barker/Strath Branch, which also saw our valued leader Bro Andrew stand down from his Leadership role. Bro Andrew is starting a new fish supply business in Magill and needs to focus his efforts to getting after new business. I am sure fellow Knights especially those close by will track him down and get their orders by phone, email and personal visits to help him get on his feet. Jesus had a few friends who were fisher folk, so Bro Andrew is in good company. Good Luck!!

Prior to his standing down Bro Andrew lead us in several Community efforts as we continue to raise the public profile of our role in, not only the Parish, but also the more diverse Hills Community, these included.1 Recruiting: Bro Brian was inducted,

and we continue to align with several other candidates.

2 Annual Dinner: it was a positive, if small, gathering but those in attendance had a very good meal, some fun with the putt-putt and many went home with raffle prizes. A big thanks to those people who travelled and those that came from head office — much appreciated support.

There was even a minor miracle (not quite the one that Mr Morrison had on the same night!) when Helen won the putt -putt, her husband was banished from the premises to practise.

Also, thanks to John Hardy from Angel Flight who gave us an insight to activity of that group.

3 Bro Mike G (who is standing in for Bro Andrew) maintained the

leadership efforts by gaining a grant for a trailer on which to mount a mobile BBQ and storage unit. Now to get it built; a big thanks for that Bro Mike.

4 The Car Boot sale was held on a great Sunday morning. Again, thanks to Bro John B for all his organising and enthusiasm, it is much more than a fund raiser. It is also a bonding for Members and a social outing that builds harmony and knowledge of fellow Members. Well done.

5 Bro Steve made it safely to Melbourne on the Kids Cancer Fund Raiser Bike Ride, another great effort and a terrific cause that we are connected to.

6 The meeting at Macclesfield to continue to embrace the edges of the Parish Community.

It is traditional that activity quietens down in the Hills during winter, so while the last meeting was held at Strathalbyn on Wed, June 12, we will be looking to emerge into Spring with a Family Quiz Night on Sept 14. All are invited, make a table and get along.

We are being requested to assist with the $40,000 needed for the History of KSCSA with a donation, so we will need to review activity and budget to see what can be done in the coming 2 years … anyone with any ideas or wanting to assist directly with a contribution please speak to Bro Mike or Bro John or indeed contact Bro Don Campbell at Head Office.

In closing, we trust all Brothers and Branches are enjoying a safe and happy winter and spending a bit of time rebuilding energies and efforts for the Spring that is almost here. This is the time in our spiritual calendar that is often left to meander, so a great time for KSC to be seen and active in local communities … visit an aged care facility, volunteer at a school nearby, write some poetry, help bridge the cold hearts with some warm community activity. Be safe and God Bless.

SOUTHERN FLEURIEUAs I write this article a great servant of the

Knights and our parish Bro Bill Longworth is preparing for surgery. Our prayers are with him and his wife Lennie and family at this tense time. Bro Bill has been our longest serving Branch Chairman, as well as being a State Councillor for many years, and is as one of our requirements of our order, a fine Catholic gentleman. He is very fondly thought of in the Goolwa community, and a great supporter of church and social activities.

At the same time another parishioner of Goolwa (not a Knight) also suffered an illness, so we were all in a bit of a shock. A reminder to us all we are not getting any younger. Also, the widow of a Brother has had a fall recently and is not enjoying good health at present. Our prayers for the sick keep getting longer each day. I guess it’s part of the ageing process.

Our Mothers’ Day wine raffle was a great success with people at both Mass centres missing out on tickets. So, we are taking a risk for Fathers’ Day and doubled our usual 35 tickets to 70, and rather than having a parish draw we will conduct a draw in each Mass centre. Also, we have committed to the BBQ at Bunnings on Sept 8. Our other social is in September and is our Annual Luncheon on Sept 19, when our guest speaker will be Chris Burns (son of Bro Phil) who is in charge of mental health in S.A.

I will shortly be making contact with Anglican Priest, Fr Jesse Poole, who is working with the growing number of homeless people on the South coast. In my earlier discussions with Fr Jesse he has indicated he would be happy to come and talk to our Members on this problem and maybe talk on our ability to give support.

It was great to see Bro Ian Reid back with us at our last meeting after a long layoff Whilst it was good to see him back, his boasting of where his beloved cats were on the premiership table compared to the 2 SA clubs was a bit unbearable!

Paul Kennelly

MURRAY MALLEEIt was very pleasing to have had our

State Chairman Bro Don Campbell in attendance at our July meeting. We are aware there is quite a bit of travelling involved, but we do appreciate personal contact from Head Office. Don updated us on activities and accomplishments from State Council as well as joining in the formation, general discussions and issues relating to the welfare of our Branch.

The history book launch was discussed and, while we do value the importance of preserving history, it is a massive expense. We do have 3 members of our Branch whose service goes back a long way, and there is no doubt that would be the case with a lot of branches. It is a show of loyalty and an insight into what the procedure was many years ago.

We didn’t have anyone available to attend the Training Day Presentation but we do have it via email so it will be on the agenda at our meetings. Also, we will be involved in a Parish visitation renewal programme coming up in August.

On projects, it is often mentioned about our commitment to ministries and the odd jobs around the Church at Tailem Bend. Bro. Peter Nearmy has arranged that we meet regularly prior to our meetings on the second Tuesday of the month to deal with a bit of gardening and so forth to keep the surrounds presentable.

On a lighter note Bro Don Campbell had a bit of a travel home facing him but did find time to join us for coffee and cake which made for a nice social gathering together after the meeting.

See you in the spring. Best wishes to all.

Peter Connolly

ABERFOYLE PARK A bit of an update, since my travelogue

from Peru … Our meeting agendas seem to be getting

busier by the month — with another BBQ coming-up at Bunnings (Marion), as well as preparing for our Branch’s 30th Birthday celebrations (Oct 12 – 13). We’re continuing to support the Nativity parish, having pledged a significant donation towards the church carpet fund, plus funding our own special parish project — an air-conditioning unit, for the second transportable. This will be much appreciated by the younger members of the Parish, for their meetings during the summer months. Although we are still small in numbers (does this sound familiar?), we are large in impact. Several Parish men — active as they are with other duties (work, family, etc.) — have expressed an interest in joining us, at some stage. We are complementary to other groups in our parish community … we’re certainly not in competition with any of them!

You’ll be aware of recent debates, and developments in the wider community (including in State and Federal governments). Protection of religious freedoms has featured highly on the recent agenda, especially since the Israel Folau case. His comments about homosexuals, on social media, were considered offensive in some quarters — but he has certainly paid the price! ‘Judge not, lest ye be judged’ is a good quote, and we in the KSC would choose to have freedom of religious expression, provided that it did not marginalise certain sectors of the community.

Jesus said: “Let he among you, that is without sin,

cast the first stone”. The recent pushes for voluntary

euthanasia (and even abortion on-demand) seem to us, however, to be the thin end of the wedge in an increasingly secular society. So, it occurs to me that one of KSC’s principle objectives, to foster the Christian way of life throughout the Nation is more important today, than it has ever been.

While we respect the rights of those of other faiths especially, perhaps since this year’s massacre of Muslims, in the Christchurch mosques, Christianity has been at the core of the Australian identity — so, we all have important work to do!

Politics is never boring … our newly-re-elected PM is a committed (Pentecostal) Christian. Other denominations are also, of course respected in Australia (I often attend ‘my daughter’s church’ — bible-based and ‘loosely Pentecostal’ — when working in Melbourne, and Pope Francis is reaching-out to Pentecostal church leaders in, e.g. Latin-America). It will be interesting to see whether the PM’s Christian faith translates into a fairer deal for ordinary Australians (achieving extraordinary things, sometimes) and, for example decisive action on climate-change and our energy policies, restoring Australia’s overseas aid budget, seriously in decline to something approaching pre-2013 levels – i.e. a more Christian approach (?). The ALP, of course snatched defeat from the jaws of victory — but they tried for too much change, too quickly, and failed. In the Knights, however, although we can promote religious observance and freedoms (and even freedom of the press and other media, to tell it the way it is, e.g. in the Julian Assange case?), include all shades of political opinion, and therefore don’t have any political agendas. Our Training Half-Day on Jun 15 was well-attended. The Knights, in SA at least, need a Vision and Mission, to be ‘commonly-known’. Our guest speaker from Victoria, Bro John Hennessy, made some good points. We shall continue to support the Parish (especially their projects for younger parishioners) and, e.g. Caritas and St Vinnies (for their winter appeal, and others), as far as our fund-raising permits. Bunnings BBQs are looking ‘promising’, for the rest of the year!

Tom Evans

PORT AUGUSTAPort Augusta hosted a very important

function back 20 May 20 when we played host to the clergy of the Pt Pirie Diocese plus several other visiting clergy from the Adelaide diocese also present were several KSC Members from various city Branches plus Whyalla. Prior to tee off the Catholic Women’s League provided lunch for the participants and, after a successful day on the golf course, a very delightful meal and social evening was delivered at the West Augusta Football Club.

At the June meeting our Christmas Dinner was discussed and agreement made that it will be held on Sat, Dec 7 at the Flinders Hotel after the 6.30pm Mass. Another social function will take place on Sep 19 in lieu of our general meeting; a mixed dinner will be at the Flinders Hotel commencing 7pm, at going to press I believe a guest speaker is being pursued.

A big thank you also goes out to Father Kahlid and the sisters of St Joseph Kensington for transporting and delivery of 50 coats which are supplied by the Order of Malta for the vulnerable people within our community and district of the Northern Spencer Gulf who require some nice warm clothing over the cold months of the year.

Bro John Atkinson has resigned from our Branch and he will be a big loss not only to the Branch but also within the All Saints community. John was very actively involved in many maintenance and building tasks within the Parish. While it is not a total loss to Knights as a whole, John has signed up with the Edwardstown/Plympton Branch so it is a big gain for their Branch. We wish Bro John and Veronica all the best in their new chapter living in the city.

On a final note I believe we will be honoured at Port Augusta to have our Victorian Member Bro Colin Walsh present at our August General Meeting. We will be looking forward to having Colin present.

PARA REGION As per these cold winter months, our

attendances for the past two Meetings have resulted in eight and ten Brothers accordingly. Several apologies were also tendered.

All Portfolios and usual procedures were attended to, which also showed that relative activities have been rather quiet here in recent times.

Malcolm Allison will be attending to the forthcoming Student Mock Interviews to come on Sept 3.

Welfare issues were dealt with accordingly, with Brother Dudley Dolman is hoping to be back at Meetings after the winter months conclude. Also Bro Matt Fitzgerald remains in good spirits in this his 101st year, and it has been noted that a former much-loved Elizabeth South Parish Priest in Fr Peter Dunn is now in the Flora MacDonald Hospice.

State Chairman Bro Don Campbell, at our July Meeting, gave a good update of Head Office agendas. Following his appeal for Branch financial support for the History Book to get under way; our Branch has responded most generously as we see this to be a most important venture to record the KSC journey here in South Australia!

Also, as a matter of interest, we still wonder here just how cold it has to be to get Bro Brendan out of his shorts and into long trousers???

Finally, those Mighty Eagles have now done a Lazarus by winning it’s past four games in a row. Look out! — here we come!!

Seamlessly Bro Tony Schar and I would expect Ida would have put a fair bit of work into the background, took up the reins and the show went on. Support from Bro Peter Murphy in ticketing, Bros Graham Gurry, Graham Workman and Gerry O’Shea was most noticeable. A fun evening hosted by the Tonsley Hotel. State Chairman Bro Don Campbell gave us a short address re the compilation of the book being prepared on ‘the History of the Knights in SA’ whereby he advised of the huge support of people like our own Bro Tony Schar in doing heavy research, wading through literally tones of old records. No, no, no, it wasn’t Tony who did the cutting and the pasting of all the photos on the computer. Then the sending on to Bro Andy Tamassy for editing, for then to head off to websites and future Knights History Book. Yes, that name Ida comes up again. Yes, Ida Schar. We all congratulate and collectively thank you for your skill and efforts.

Mgr Rob Egar got the meal on the way with Grace.

I guess I was very fortunate to win a bottle of wine, seeing the Hallett Cove St Vinnies raided the opening session of the Wine Draw.

Branch Meetings: June was a mixed meeting. We were

treated with a flash back of history where Bro Rod Roach spoke to us from his thorough research on the topic — ‘The Crusades’. At the end of his talk we moved into Q & A where his knowledge of the topic was noticeably broad. Don’t know if we covered the fact or fiction argument. Thanks to Bro Rod for his in-depth research.

July meeting, the first of our daytime meetings for this winter. Present was Mgr Rob Egar who spoke for the youth representatives in our Parish, who were invited to our meeting to discuss or share their ongoing needs in the Parish with us, and with us advising them of ours. Also, two members of the Brighton Parish Council, who were present to get a feel of what the Knights of the Southern Cross was all about and once again getting a handle on our ongoing needs, putting everyone in the picture. The Brighton Parish is, right now, having change forced upon it. The primary school is leaving premises in six months. Schools with a church bring about a natural hub of various activities together with new blood annually. That is going to change, hence talk, talk, talk is imperative.

The Formation Program #5 A Century of Service. Here we

reflected on the history of the Knights in our own particular area, personal involvement and where we are heading. Certainly topical for where we are at present time. What are our needs etc.

ValeThe passing was noted of a long-

standing Bro in Leo Myatt who had moved from our Branch a couple of years back,

I blame my Marist days I suppose. Maybe it came from a pocket dictionary but from earlier times to almost the present, I had thought that the word Creative belonged to actions attributed to God only.

Over the years, I had reserved the words Create, Creates, Created, Creating, Creative etc to God’s primal act of bringing the world as we know it into existence.

But my 1987 dictionary says otherwise and provides five (5) supportive definitions; it then goes on with another three (3) to really overwhelm my adolescent view.

So all those ideas I had during my early career might have been described by the term ‘creative’ instead of ‘inventive’ or ‘technical’ etc and I didn’t have to go into competition with my colleagues in the Program Division. I hadn’t realised that I could be so wrong and that now I may possibly owe them a late apology.

But after a few days of smugness, I felt some disquiet and chased through a few other books on English and found a passage in one (Fowler’ Modern English Usage) that, to a large degree, supported the Marist approach.

‘Creative’ was defined in the second revised edition (1975) as:

‘A term of praise much affected by the critics. It is presumably intended to mean original, or something like that, but is preferred because it is more vague and less usual (cf. seminal). It has been aptly called a “Luscious, round, meaningless word” and said to be “so much in honour that it is the clinching term of approval from the schoolroom to the advertiser’s studio”.

The definition said all that I would have wanted to say about the word. So I’ll continue to stick to ‘inventive’, or ‘technical’ or ‘original’ or ‘imaginative’ for technological achievements and save ‘creative’ for the most extraordinary works of our God. However, I’m not at all certain what my Program and Artistic colleagues might use in the future; I have the feeling that they will stick to the dictionary definitions.

So, what word or words stand out for you — there must be one or two? In our family and on a different tack, one particular grandson was the catalyst for coining the word ‘ frustalate’ when he objected to one of my umpiring decisions during a lop-sided game of footy between cousins. He meant to say frustrate but his descriptive cry was so much better that it has become ingrained into family use.

Somehow or other, I reckon the Marists set me off along the right road with the ‘take on create’ and while one must admit there were quite a few deviant paths, I was extremely fortunate over the years.

Some Words — e.g. ‘Creat ivity’Some words stand starkly in one’s memory and one for me is ‘creativity’; I’m certain that this one got in around 1938 and that is over 80 years ago.

I Remember … Fr Kieran’s Story (Part 1)

Reprinted from Holy Cross Family Newsletter with kind permission of the author, Fr Denis Travis CP.

The Leratong Hospice stands on a hillside overlooking one of the large shanty towns that surround Pretoria in South Africa. It is both a haven of care, solace and ongoing medical treatment for men and women who are suffering from HIV/Aids and above all provides palliative care for those who are dying from the same disease. (‘Leratong’ means ‘the place of love’.)

The 18-bed facility opened in 2004 principally as a result of Fr Kieran’s dedication and drive. Kieran is a Passionist priest ordained in 1993 and hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He had seen a need in that people in the townships, due to their poverty and the lack of medical services, rapidly progressed from initial infection to terminal illness and death. Often too these deaths occurred in isolated and impoverished circumstances. With personnel and financial support from our Congregation, assistance from foreign embassies (including Australia's High Commission in Pretoria) the project slowly took shape. First, the land was purchased, then the buildings rose with two principal wings – one for female patients and one for the men. Each wing had additional areas so that families of the dying could stay with them over this journey. Then followed the daycare medical facility and clinic (so that people who were HIV positive could come to received medications and treatment discretely) and finally, a chapel was constructed. Slowly too, staff were gathered and ongoing funding was organised with the principal contributors being the Anglo American company (the world’s largest producer of platinum among other metals), Irish Aid (an arm of the Government of Ireland) and the Passionist Congregation.

As a recognition of this work and his care of others, Kieran was named Irish International Personality of the Year in 2004.

When I visited Leratong Hospice, it was good to see a small plaque in the hospice recognising the contribution of the Australian High Commission to establish the laundry facilities and more recently I notice that Aus Aid sponsored some of the in-service training and staff development program for the current staff members.

However, a near tragic event occurred in 2007. The European Union announced an extremely large grant to the Hospice. This was good news and news that quickly spread! In the process, ‘word’ got round that there was a huge amount of money in the hospice itself and some young men took it upon themselves to rob the Hospice that night.

They overpowered the guard at the gate (and locked him in a shed); the night nursing staff were forced to flee to a central area and lock themselves in a room without communications, and the men then moved through the hospice towards the chaplain’s flat (located at the back of the building). This is where Fr Kieran stayed of a night.

Hearing the knocking on his door, and thinking it was a call to go to one of the patients who was dying, Fr Kieran opened the door and was confronted by the two armed men. A brief struggle ensued as Kieran tried to close the door again and the men shot him twice – once in the chest and once in the arm before fleeing.

Kieran was left alone and wounded. After some time he struggled to a window

I admire the good samaritan, but I don't want to be one. I don't want to spend my life picking up people by the side of the road after they have been beaten up and robbed. I want to change the Jericho road, so that everybody has an opportunity for a job, education, security, health.

SOUTHERN CROSS GOLF CLUBOur annual weekend at Horsham has

come and gone. Approximately 60 Knights and associates along with one lady (many of us were accompanied by our wives who do not play golf ), made the pilgrimage where old friendships were renewed and new ones forged. Many of us look forward to the wonderful camaraderie that is engendered at this event.

This year the weather was very kind to us — no rain, no frost and very little wind until the Monday. One would have thought that this was a recipe for some good scores. However not one player managed to play to his or her handicap on the Saturday and only one on the Sunday.

Congratulations to Chris Otway who had 35 points in winning his second Reub Maguire Memorial Trophy. Last year’s winner, Simon Sleep, was the runner-up and took home the Wal Riddell/Ed Lovick Memorial Trophy with 32 points. Jack Kerin won the Jim Cooke Memorial Trophy with 38 points. Ian Cartland and Pat Berger led the field in the 4BBB Perpetual Memorial Trophy with 43 points.

In the team events South Australia was successful in the Rosebowl beating Victoria 325 to 297 points. The highlight for SA was the resounding victory in the major competition, the State Cup. Success was achieved with a seven matches to two victory. SA also won the Horsham Plate.

and miraculously, there across the street, was a young boy at the window of his family house. Kieran was finally able to get his attention and after some appeals, he was eventually able to enlist the lad’s aid to raise the alarm. Help was finally arranged.

Kieran was hospitalised for surgery and when able, was brought home to Ireland for a period of recovery. After this, he returned again to South Africa and to the Hospice, but the bullets had left more than physical scars and after a relatively short time he returned again permanently to North Ireland, where he still ministers to this day.

Next edition I will continue Kieran’s story – and highlight his meeting with the Rev. Ian Paisley (Northern Ireland’s First Minister from May 2007 to mid-2008)! Stay tuned.

Till next time, Denis
