CELEBRATION was in the air at St Mark’s College, the Diocesan Residential Youth Centre at Audley End, on June 29. The special guest at the event was the High Sheriff of Essex, Nicholas Charrington, accompanied by his wife Sheila. Bishop Stephen and his wife Rebecca were joined by Bishop Moses and his wife Lucy, from the Kenyan link Diocese of Mbeere together with Archdeacon Robin and his wife Katharine. Together with 50 invited guests they met in the chapel for an afternoon of thanksgiving. The event marked the 20th anniversary of St Mark’s being opened as a residential youth centre for the Diocese of Chelmsford. Built around 1600, the 38-bed centre, which is a converted Grade 1 listed almshouse for the Audley End Estate, was previously used as a retirement home for clergy and a farm. But its origins as a place of service to God’s people stretch back even further than that. Prior to the Reformation, the land on which Audley End House is built was home to the Benedictine Walden Abbey and the St Mark’s site was the Monastery’s Infirmaria (hospital). The chapel was consecrated in 1258 by the Bishop of Ely and so it can be said with much confidence that the place has been given over to the service of Jesus Christ for more than 750 years. The tradition continues to this day with hundreds of young people each year experiencing the hospitality and hope of the gospel with residential and day visits to St Mark’s. The service opened with young people leading the 50-strong congregation in worship using the Djembe african drums and a Jewish Shofar (ram’s horn) calling visitors to prayer and worship. The St Mark’s team run regular drum workshops for visiting groups, making this a fitting start to the service. The worship was led by Revd Pete Hillman, director of St Mark’s, with Sam La Roche who is operations manager and outreach worker. Bishop Stephen gave the address and led prayers of rededication with Archdeacon Robin King offering prayers of thanksgiving for the past and present ministry of St Mark’s. At the end of the service, gifts were presented to recently-retired trustees Jane Appleby and David Lankshear with grateful thanks for their years of dedicated service to St Mark’s. After the service guests enjoyed a celebratory tea with tours of the site conducted by the director including the guest bedrooms which will be refurbished upon the successful reaching of the £45,000 anniversary appeal target.
