At the time to be honest, I really didn’t give it much thought, but now that I’m older I reflect back and I truly believe I’m lucky to have this life and the opportunity to be able to choose what I want to do in life. There are some in this world that literally risk their lives to find a better life. On June 26th, 1989 the weather was perfect, glassy waters and awesome visibility. Our ship was just leaving the waters off the Philippines after protecting foreign tankers from pirates. We were about 400 miles out and someone spotted a small vessel on the horizon with people waving their hands. I tell you what, it was a good thing the ocean was glassy or we wouldn’t have spotted them. We approached the small vessel that was sinking and found over 90 Vietnamese refugees. I’ve never witness anything like this, you should of seen the look on everyone’s faces. Some were panicking, trying to jump as high as they could to climb on board, while some were just standing still with a frightened look. It was a mad house, so our ship maneuvered away and we sent a smaller vessel out to transfer the women and children first then the men. After they boarded, the medical team checked everyone out and they were fed. Since they only had the clothing on their backs we all donated clothes. After pulling into port in Singapore they were sent to refugee camps and we never heard what happened to them after that. Now when I reflect back and think about what they risked to find freedom, I can say I’m truly lucky to have this life and to live in a country that does a lot of humanitarian missions. That makes me feel good. I hear so many stories in the mainstream media that say the U.S is bad but I wish they could also highlight a lot of the good we do in the world as well. !Did you check out the Vintage Surf

Happening? ! The timing couldn't have been better with Randy Rarick being honored into the Surf Walk of Fame for us to have our Vintage Surf Happening. The New

Brand called Vissla was the sponsor and Randy hosted the event and it was a huge success. !It took place Saturday July 26th and we had, according to Randy, about 600 to 700 people that came down and

checked out the event. It was really cool to see all the people getting their vintage boards appraised. We had Representative Marcus Oshiro get an old board he found under his mom’s house appraised, and according to Randy it was a rare board. Shaped by Lopez that was some kind of collaboration and the lighting Bolt Logo is curved. I also seen people that I haven't

see for years. John Carper’s wife who was the person behind the scene helping JC out for all those years. We also had Pat Rawson come check us out. Oh and by

the way I’m working with Pat on some exclusive boards, that we’ll have in the near future. It was really special to see Jeannie Chesser as well.

This was by far the biggest event we’ve had to date and we’ll be having more in the near future. I know we have a lot of requests for Movie night so make sure we have your emails current with us, if you’re not sure if we have a current email just drop us a line at [email protected] or call us and we’ll update your profile. !

Thank you very much for Your Reviews!! !

I’d like to thank all of you that submitted a review on Yelp, Google + , or via Royalty Rewards survey. It keeps us on our toes. Below are some reviews. If you haven't submitted a review please give us a shout out especially on yelp, we’d like to hear from you!! !Kyle went above and beyond to provide excellent service for me! Not only did Kyle kindly and patiently answer all my questions (asked over several phone calls), he went out of his way to add valuable input about products offered. Kyle is an amazing asset to Hawaiian South Shore! !Eric was very helpful and offered excellent insight and advice about Takayama fins. I live in Pearl City but I go to your shop because of your friendly staff, great products and because of your customer loyalty program. You care about your customers and it shows. !The staff were very helpful and friendly. I previously got to borrow future fins for FREE to try before buying and then returned to buy the fins. -Lindsey M

Yep The Little Bugga Makes a Difference

by Alison My Surf Buddy !Tuesday  morning,  May  20,  2014,  Dave  Kelly,  proprietor  of  Hawaiian  South  Shore  and  good  buddy,  suggested  I  try  riding  my  Quad  with  a  Cny  liDle  5th  skeg  which  I  have  learned  is  called  a  Knubster  or  Guitar  Pick.    Dave’s  observant  of  surfer’s  styles  and  talents  and  is  ALWAYS  looking  to  help  fellow  surfers  achieve  higher  levels  in  their  surfing  experiences.    I  chuckled  and  told  Dave  that,  given  my  skill  set,  I  probably  wouldn’t  know  the  difference.  NOT!!!

This  liDle  fin,  seemingly  so  insignificant,  brings  a  whole  new  ride  to  a  Quad.  It  is  small  enough  to  sCll  keep  the  tail  loose,  but  I  definitely  felt  “hooked  in.”    From  the  takeoff,  this  skeg  offered  enough  stability  that  I  felt  like  I  could

aggressively  push/drive  the  board  more  with  control.    Also,  with  the  hooked  in  sensaCon,  the  wave  seemed  like  a  bigger

“playing  field”  for  maneuvering.

Quads  are  fun  in  that  they  have  quickie  speed  to  them.  This  speed  someCmes  gets  a  liDle  squirelly.    The  Nubster  helped  me  manage  that

speed,  but  there  was  no  foregone  speed  exchanged  for  beDer  control.    SCll  a  zesty  ride!

As  IronMan  (Robert  Downey,  Jr.)  tells  Pepper  (Gwyneth  Paltrow)  when  he  first  meets  Natalia  Romanova  (ScarleD  Johansson)  coming  out  of  the  boxing  ring,  “I  want  one.”

!Member of the Month

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a Member of the month in our newsletter and I’m super excited to introduce a young girl by the name of Sasha; she’s 11 years old. She loves the ocean and has been surfing for 4 years. You can find her at Kewalo Basin surfing just about every day with the rest of her friends. She looks up to pros Carissa Moore, Malia Manuel, and Kelia Moniz. Sasha loves the ocean and is always seen smiling. One of her best memories was when her Uncle Kainoa McGee pushed her into a huge Haliewa wave which she rode it through. It was scary but there was no turning back. Besides surfing she loves hiking, spending time with family, and training Jiu Jitsu with Kaleo Auwae at Relson Gracie Team Papakolea. She enjoys her acai bowls after a surf session and her loco moco bowl at Rainbow Drive Inn.

The Picture above is Sasha taken by the family friend Darcy Fiero.

I like the product. Non-greasy and easy to apply, as well as better ingredients. I hope to see the price come down or an increase in size. - Blaise B!! #1 Best Thing - Not Greasy! #2 = Great Protection #3 = Small amount goes a long way - Cyrus R
