August is Recess Month

The Club is taking the

month of August off. As

such, there are no

member meetings,

Seminar sessions, or

Club shoots in August

EXCEPT the Beginners Shoot on August 3rd.

Accordingly there will be no August newsletter.

We will catch up on the July shooting events in

the September issue. Any July shooting events

will be updated on the website during the month

of July.

We will “see you in September”.

Shooters World Status

The flooring

slab is

complete and

the walls

should be

starting soon.

Seen here are

wooded floors

being

installed.

When oh when

will it open?

It is likely to

be early

December.

Perhaps it will

be a Happy

New Year’s celebration.

On 3 July the Daily Sun published that Shooters

World will open on 9 July a Welcome Center in

Brownwood (2666 W. Torch Lake Drive).

According to the Daily Sun, the welcome center

will buy and sell

used guns as well as

memberships to the

shooting range.

However, as noted in

Terry Marksberry

email on 5 July,

Shooters World has

not executed on any proposals that VSS has

extended, thus there will likely be no membership

discounts.

It might be better to wait until later this year when

Shooters World is more responsive to VSS

requests and we can fill you in on the new Basics

indoor shooting range near SR’s 466 and 441

projected for late 1st quarter 2019. By next year

we will go from famine to feast.

MEMBER MEETING Recap

This was a 3 hour presentation condensed into a

fast paced one hour. It is also a complicated

subject, but you needed to hear it to get started

understanding the impact Political Islam has on

the world. Below is a summary of the presentation

by someone who was a Navy Captain and worked

for the CIA for 24 years; a person who knows the

situation.

• There are three sacred texts with Islam. The

Qur’an, the Hadiths, and the Sira.

• There is also a fourth text, the “Law Book”

which has been around since the 1300s.

Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law.

• Muslims believe the Qur’an is the literal word

of Allah as revealed to Muhammad.

• They also believe the Qur’an is superior to all

other scriptures for religions such as

Christianity (like the Bible), Buddhism,

Hinduism, etc. because they think it really is

the Word of God.

• Followers believe, as a matter of faith, that the

entire Qur’an – every word, every syllable – is

EXACTLY the same as purportedly given to

Muhammad in the 7th century. (Note: Steven

Massood, a former Muslim, has written a book

proving otherwise The Bible and the Qur’an.)

• The Sunna is the Way of Muhammad – his

words, deeds and actions.

• The Sira is his official biography and about

800 pages long.

• Muslims believe that Muhammad is the

embodiment of the perfect human being.

Thus, according to their way of thinking, it

makes perfect sense to emulate everything

Muhammad did. He is “the” role model for

all time.

• Fundamentalist Muslims also believe the

Sharia represents Gods plan for ALL

mankind.

• The word Islam, itself, means “submission.”

It does not mean “peace.”

• The world of Islam is divided between Sunni

and Shia, with 85% being Sunni.

• Islam’s 1.8B population can also be roughly

divided into four “pie slices” as follows:

o Liberals – people that accept The West

and its norms ---- 15%

o Moderates – accept the West, but

appreciate Islam’s culture & traditions

--- 41%

o Radicals – believe in the goals of

Sharia ---- 43% (this is 100’s of

millions of people)

o Jihadists – these are the violent

proponents of Sharia --- less than 1%

Note: numbers based on one survey in UK

2006. Numbers will actually be in a range.

Modern day Radical Islam and radical beliefs are,

to a great extent, rooted in

Wahhabism. A major lead,

until his death in 1999, was

the Grand Mufti of Saudi

Arabia. This position is

filled only by direct

descendants of the founder,

al-Wahhab, who died in 1792 AD.

Fundamentalist Muslims take the scripture in the

Qur’an literally, i.e. chop off their hands for theft,

lashings for many offenses, the death penalty for

sodomy, etc. were some of the examples cited.

Political Islam, or Islamism, looks at the world

through the lens of the Rule of God versus the

Rule of Man. Their goal is Shariah law for

everyone. They are using two methods to reach

this goal. One is Jihad – the brutal terrorism and

fighting we see around the world. The other

method is Da’wah – a much softer means but to

the same end. Some have compared Da’wah to,

in military terms, “preparation of the battlefield.”

If Islamism were an iceberg, the part above water

would be Jihad and the huge amount underwater

would be Da’wah. The old saying is “the pen is

mightier than the sword” – Da’wah is the pen for

the Islamists and Jihad is the sword. The purpose

of Da’wah is for everyone, eventually, to submit

and surrender to Allah and to destroy the Western

way of life. (There are examples of this. Muslim

communities wanting to install Sharia courts and

Sharia law, the explosion of calls of Islamophobia

anytime Muslims were challenged, etc. Look at

Dearborn, Michigan right here in the USA.)

Muhammad was born in 570 AD. He was

uneducated, but very smart. Probably genius

level. He worked on the caravans from Arabia to

Syria and learned about Judaism and Christianity

except that he got a lot of it wrong. In 610 AD,

while living in Mecca, he said he received

revelations from the angel Gabriel. These were

primarily peaceful teachings on how people

should live their lives. At the end of 12 years he

Page 3: August is Recess Month - The Villages Straight Shooters ... · ©, Straight Shooters Newsletter July - August 2018 Page 1 of 8 August is Recess Month The Club is taking the month

only had about 150 followers. He moved to

Medina in 622 AD (Hijra”) and his teachings

became more radical and violent. He started

Jihad, which involved robbing the caravans that

passed by and sharing the wealth with his fellow

Muslims and evolved into open warfare on the

Meccans. These terror tactics worked, and he

soon had over 100,000 followers. In the Sira, his

biography, about 16% of the book is about the

teachings in Mecca when he was a preacher, but

about 68% covers the Medina period when he was

a warrior. The rest of the book talks about his

childhood etc.

Another observation is that Da’wah really took off

worldwide (mosques, clerics, curricula, books

etc.) in the 1980’s because it was funded by the

huge amounts of dollars flowing into Saudi

Arabia due to the rapid rises in petroleum prices

and the advent of OPEC.

Shariah was summarized briefly, in particular the

impact on women.

The Muslim Brotherhood was formed in 1928 to

spread Shariah Law worldwide and restore the

Islamic

Caliphate …

kind of like

their Empire.

The

Brotherhood

first came to

America in 1963 when it set up its first chapter of

the Muslim Students Association at the University

of Illinois. The Brotherhood’s organization and

infrastructure has since evolved into a highly

organized and complex structure. If the religious

goal is obligatory then deception, when needed, is

obligatory according to the Classic Manual of

Islamic Sacred Law. (This video is instructive:

Tagiyya – CAIR Florida President shows us how

it’s done from UTT). The FBI conducted a covert

raid in 2004 and discovered a cache of documents

buried beneath a double basement floor in

Annandale, VA. This link contains more details

What happens at the outdoor range

I thought we should chat about health and safety

concerns while shooting. Being a first responder

for 15 years in New Jersey as an EMT, this

subject is near and dear to my heart. We have a

capable staff at Club events and their training

includes some basic first

aid. There are even a few

health professionals that

take the guise of RSO or

Instructor from time to

time. But it’s important

that you know what to do

in case you find yourself without proper support,

shooting alone at a range, while hunting or – in an

extreme scenario – finding yourself in a

confrontation with an evil-doer. You should

always have a decent first-aid kit in your range

bag or on your person. You can purchase a variety

of portable trauma kits online, but make certain

you learn about the contents and how to use them.

This article is just a basic primer on the kind of

emergencies you’re bound to run into while

shooting.

I strongly encourage you to further your

preparedness by taking a free CPR/AED

certification class every two years at our local fire

departments

or by taking a

basic first aid

class. Just

remember

that when

dealing with

firearms, deal with the gun first and then get to the

patient. If possible, have someone else call 911.

BLEEDING: Since half of the Villagers are on

some sort of blood thinner, bleeding injuries can

be more serious than usual

around this neighborhood.

The injury can be a minor

slide-bite or something truly

serious like a gunshot

wound. In any case, stopping

the bleeding as fast as

possible is vital. Direct pressure is the usual

solution (combined, if possible, with elevation of

the injured part above the level of the heart – as in

a hand). If the bleeding is especially aggressive, a

tourniquet may become necessary, but that is

beyond the scope of this article and you should

receive training in their application and the

cautions you should observe in their use. They’ll

often be included in a commercial trauma kit, but

an improvised tourniquet, as in a belt, can be used

in a pinch. Direct pressure sometimes needs to be

applied longer than you might think, so be

prepared to clamp down with strength for about 5

minutes and/or until the bleeding has stopped.

Good old Band Aids are usually enough for most

small injuries you will encounter. In very serious

injuries, a patient can bleed out in a minute, so

speed is essential. If it’s a gun shot wound, you

may very well have to deal with an exit wound as

well, so don’t neglect examining the injured party

thoroughly.

HEAT: Here’s a bulletin for you: You live in

Florida and sometimes it gets really hot! If you

happen to be shooting outside on one of those

particularly

steamy days and

start to feel a

little woozy, it

behooves you to

put down your

firearm safely,

go sit down in

the shade and

force some water. Ask me how I know! You may

be feeling the beginnings of heat exhaustion,

which can lead to heat cramps and even to heat

stroke (a life-threatening condition) if left

untreated. Although drinking more water than you

feel like you need is a time-honored method of

combating heat exhaustion, you’ve got a dilemma.

Drinking (or eating) on the firing line is a no-no.

“So” – you say to me – “you’re telling me I have

to go to the trouble of going in back of the ready

table and wiping my hands and face with a lead-

wipe every time I think it’s prudent to take a sip

of water?!” Yup. Exactly that. You can’t chance

ingesting the nasty parts of the shooting sports, so

it’s a must. If you notice someone start to get

shaky at the line, deal with the gun first and then

help them to shade – a seat – a lead-wipe and

water. If they don’t feel better in a reasonable

Page 5: August is Recess Month - The Villages Straight Shooters ... · ©, Straight Shooters Newsletter July - August 2018 Page 1 of 8 August is Recess Month The Club is taking the month

The Reticle©

amount of time, we have at our disposal an entire

fleet of what the military likes to call, “Mobile

Refrigeration Units”, or – in civilian terms - our

cars. The woozy shooter can be laid down in the

back of an SUV with the air conditioning

pumping away until relief is achieved. If the

condition remains, 911 can be called or, if

necessary, they can be driven to a hospital.

OTHER ICKY STUFF: There are a host of other

pre-existing conditions that one might encounter

on the line, especially considering the age-related

patina most of us living in The Villages have

acquired. Many of those conditions that could

affect us, including sugar-related emergencies, are

known to the individuals and they very well may

be able to direct you in helping them with their

particular dilemma. You don’t need to be a

physician to help and common sense and a cool

head will go a long way toward aiding a fellow

shooter in distress. At all of our Club events, the

Shoot Manager will take charge and organize the

participants in helping out in an efficient manner.

But when you’re on your own or with your

buddies, a little preparation will go a long way.

Think about how prepared you are for a medical

emergency and do the right thing!

Where Do Gun Owners Keep

Their Guns at Night?

Reticle preface: The 15.5 minute video reviews 9

different scenarios regarding how long it takes to

get out of bed and fire on an intruder. The

baseline is a loaded (chambered) gun on the

nightstand which still took 2.51 seconds. It only

goes downhill (or longer times) compared to a

gun in a night stand drawer or various types of

safes. Something to compare is the type of safe

opening, i.e. spring loaded vs. gravity vs. manual.

It makes a difference!

By Jacob Paulsen on June 9, 2017, Concealed

Carry website.

Recently our team decided to conduct some

research. We distributed a survey designed to help

us learn more about where and how gun owners

keep their firearms during the night. We isolated

the responses to just those from gun owners who

say they do keep the gun near or on the bed when

sleeping.

Below are the results, but before you stop reading

and scroll down to the infographic (on the

website) please consider the following:

1. A lot of gun owners understand that their

response to an emergency such as a home

invasion will be slower if they have to retrieve

the firearm from a safe vs. the firearm sitting

atop the nightstand; but do you know HOW

MUCH SLOWER? Click here to go to the

article and video where they test and time

different response times with different safe

and no-safe configurations.

2. One of the questions asked in the survey was

left out of the infographic (on the web site)

and it’s worth quickly mentioning why. They

wondered if gun owners were more or less

likely to keep the gun in a safe near the bed if

they had a loud dog, if their bedroom were on

a second level or basement further away from

home entry points, if they had roommates, or

if they had an alarm system. The results didn't

tell any story. Despite any of those variables

being true or false for the gun owner they

were still no more or less likely than the

control group.

Seminar Review

CARRY

INSURANCE UPDATE

This topic has been presented in the past at both

the Seminar session and general member meeting.

In June, an update was provided. Generally

speaking the same top two providers retained their

status, but the gap between them narrows.

Six companies with carry insurance were

reviewed. In the end, the two best were still

USCCA and CCWSafe (previously civil and

criminal defense respectively). The difference

this year is that CCWSafe’s middle and higher

tiers of coverage also include civil trial support.

Maybe you don’t need coverage by two

companies, but attending the seminar would have

pointed out what could be.

Topic categories included:

Are you protected?

Statistics: ~75% of confrontations are non-

lethal. Are you non-lethally prepared?

Required conditions to claim self-defense

o Non-Aggressor

o Immediacy

o Parity of Force

o Duty to Retreat

o Reasonableness – most difficult to

prove

Laws of Self Defense

Criminal vs. Civil Trials

Rules of Evidence

Penalties

Self Defense Costs: can you afford on average

$440,000 to defend yourself

Types of coverage

Companies providing coverage

Company benefit comparisons

In short, to claim self-defense:

✓ you cannot be the one who starts a fight

✓ the threat must be immediate and not I’m

going home to get my gun

Page 7: August is Recess Month - The Villages Straight Shooters ... · ©, Straight Shooters Newsletter July - August 2018 Page 1 of 8 August is Recess Month The Club is taking the month

The Reticle©

, Straight Shooters Newsletter July - August 2018 Page 7 of 8

✓ you respond with parity of force or like kind

of threat you face,

✓ Duty to retreat or finding a way to escape

(except in FL)

✓ Reasonableness – would a reasonable person

do what you did?

Telling you to read the slides without going is

only part of learning. The attendee questions add

to the value of going to the seminar. For example,

This was a member question that very clearly

shows that you really need to understand the laws

and meet all 5 of the required conditions. Miss

one and your entire self-defense claim is down the

drain.

If you were being car jacked and the

aggressor is hitting and pulling you out of

the car, can you draw your gun and use it?

Or

If the car bad guy has already pulled you

out of the car and you are lying on the

ground while he/she turns away from you

and is getting in the car to drive away; can

you draw your gun and use it?

The answer to the questions is at the end of this

newsletter.

Use the Club library to check out material on this

topic. Some resources are only on DVD and if

you don’t have a DVD player, one can be checked

out via the Club library as well.
