Well, I really didn’t think that it would snow soon…and I was proven right. It has been said that there are many seasons in North Carolina. One I heard about recently is our current season…not Summer, but the Front Porch of Hell!!

I certainly hope all of you are finding a way to re-main both safe and cool in this blast of heat. This is the time of year when storms are around on any given day, and hurricanes may be right around the corner.

Please review your Hurricane Plans and make sure you are prepared. Connect with your hurricane buddy. The forecast is for a very active season.

In addition, the Dockmaster is concerned that there are a number of boats with inadequate or improper lines. He has a notice below about this issue. Please read it and act if appropriate.

I am pleased to report that the Club’s financial condition continues to be solid. We have gained some new members (and lost others). Current membership is 172. We can always use more new members.

On another note…recently, there has been an incident that caused some concern. Some person entered the circuit box on the back wall of the Clubhouse and turned off the House A/C and the Sewage Lift Sta-tion power. This caused a near overflow of the sewage tank.

Please do not adjust any of the circuit breakers in the panel box without contacting a Board member, or the Vice Commodore, Ed Doughty, or the Commodore.

Social restrictions remain in place until conditions allow us to resume gatherings. Hopefully, we will be able to conduct a Workday in mid-October.

In the meantime, when it cools a bit, we are going to try to organize some smaller work parties to take care of some outstanding projects.

Elected offices include two Board of Director positions, (probably three) as well as Secretary, Treasurer, Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore and Commodore. Think of the services and facilities

Blackbeard has provided for you and then ask, “Is it time for me to run? How can I best serve Blackbeard?”

We are a self-help club and require a dedicated slate of officers to continue in this manner. The Nominating Committee has been/will be actively recruiting individuals for these open positions over the next

few weeks, and would like to have a full slate of candidates by the beginning of September.

Will you serve? If not now, when? Organizations operate best when everyone takes a turn leading.

by Ron LeoAll Hands - Dock LinesWith spotty inclement weather this time of year and hurricane season approaching, we have concerns (as you should) about boats being properly secured per our dock policy (2 lines each at 4 corners and one spring line minimum). Not only is your boat at risk, your neighbor’s boat and club property are as well.

On a recent dock walk we found that approximately 25% of boats in our harbor are deficient! We urge all wet slip holders to check their lines, and comply/upgrade appropriately.

Lacking that, the Board has asked a Dock Committee to perform the task for you. The downside as a boat owner is the cost of lines as well as a labor cost will appear on your next BSC statement.

Please help us out by tending to this issue as soon as possible. The Dock Committee will begin upgrad-ing deficient boats in the next 3-4 weeks.

Cleaning up the ClubhouseOn a recent visit to the BSC Clubhouse, I needed to spray the big table with disinfectant. There were visible signs at 5 different seats where members had been sitting and eating, but didn't bother to clean up. In other times this would be annoying; right now it is unacceptable! We have several spray cans of disinfectant in the clubhouse and both bathrooms, kitchen and BIG table, along with paper towels. Members, please be responsible and clean up after yourselves. The cleaning materials are available. Anytime you sit at a table, in a chair, place anything on a surface, especially drinks and plates, use the spray disinfectant and towels, please! I imagine the cost to have the clubhouse professionally COVID cleaned would be expensive.

BLACKBEARD’S EPITAPH

I wrote last month how Jennifer and I were looking for a cruising catamaran, drove to Wrightsville Beach, and traded in our Prius for a ride on a 47 foot Catana. We loved the boat, and a 42 foot Catana came up for sale in the US so, we jumped on it. The bad news is no one would rent me a one-way car to Florida because of their Covid-19 outbreak. It worked once so, why not try again. The owners agreed, so I drove to St. Augustine and traded my Rav4 for a 42 foot Catamaran.

Jennifer is still working so I had to arrange crew. Lucky for me my daughter is a heck of a sailor, and I was able to recruit club mem-ber Ty Sayman and his daughter, Jordan, who sailed with Sarah on her high school sailing team. We drove down to St. Augustine on Thursday morning, paid for the boat and

cleared the Bridge of Lyons at 4:30 Thursday afternoon. It was blowing SE at 15 when we left, and we were a bit unsure of the inlet, as it looked pretty sketchy, but we motored into the large swell and made it out to the ocean in comfort. The first 11 hours were the best sailing of the delivery, hitting 9.9 knots SOG in 17 knots wind apparent, but by 3 am the winds started to die, which was the trend for the next two days.

Friday morning, we woke to flying fish on the deck after a night of star gazing. The Milky Way is incred-ible when you are away from the influence of light pollution. Friday was hot with about 8 knots of breeze as we headed for Morehead City. We had a bit of counter current so we headed further offshore to pick up the Gulf Stream, and it really was like a vast river in the ocean. There was a definite edge, and on the other side the waters were a deep cobalt blue and so clear it was like looking through the air. We were visited by vast numbers of dolphin as we dodged large patches of Sargasso. That night we were visited by several pods of dolphin who looked like torpedoes coming toward the boat trailing streams of phosphorescence as they chased flying fish attracted by the lights. ownership of their shifts. When something came up like a storm or unusual lights, they would come get me to figure out how to handle it, but for the most part operated as competent crew.

Saturday was a bit hot and oppressive with some big storms around. We used the radar to dodge the ones we could, but with a hard bimini and a world cruising boat, it wasn’t a problem when we were hit

by some big storms. We saw some marines doing exercises in the distance and tried to avoid them as they practiced landing Osprey aircraft on the deck of the boat. We called multiple times asking how they would like us to navigate around them to no avail. After getting within a mile of the ship they came on the radio to give us instructions on how to proceed, but not be-fore we got a couple of close Osprey fly-bys, and witnessed some neat landings on the ship.

Ocean sailing is pretty boring, except when it is not, so there isn’t much to say other than we had a great trip to Morehead City. We got into Beaufort Sunday morning at 1:00 am and an-chored for the night before waking up early to go under the MHC bridge at low tide. Catana Catamarans are performance boats. The 42 is the smallest boat they make, but with a mast height of 64 feet, bridges are a bit intimidating. As we ap-proached, you couldn’t really read any numbers after 64, but Sarah estimated it to be 67 feet, which was a

good estimate as our aerial touched each span of the bridge as we went by. The bridge at Core Creek is a bit higher, so we made it through there and were headed to BSC.

On the way out of Adams Creek, we saw BSC members Paul and Julie Labadie heading to Cape Lookout, then ran into Bill and Tinka Talbert sailing back from Oriental. Ed Doughty met us at Marker 2 with Jennifer and she jumped on board for the final stretch to the dock. I may be biased, but when you come to the dock with a beautiful boat, people want to see it; and it was no different on our arrival, with a lot of club members coming out for a short tour. With a cockpit 22 feet wide, it is pretty easy to stay socially distant.

Jennifer and I intend to do some short cruises to Cape Lookout and Ocracoke to figure out the systems on the boat, before heading north for the rest of the summer and fall. Then, we’ll have to wait and see where we can go from there.

As if I haven’t had enough sailing yet, Wednesday I’m going to Annapolis with Ty Sayman to pick up his new to him boat, but that will be for another article.

Another Parrot Head Regatta is in the books. This year’s Covid edition of the annual regatta seemed to promise the same as past years - light air, hot temperatures and a chance of storms. But this one was a little different as the breeze held for most of the course. On Bad Fish we were able to fly the chute from start to finish. We had good wind until Minnesott - then it was pretty light till we rounded 1AC and then we had a lovely reach back across the river to 1SC. For other competitors, we heard that there was wind all the way to 1AC, but it died on the final leg. There were 8 boats in 3 classes. The winners were Al Lang on Osprey in Cruising Class, George Story on Paramour in Non-Spinnaker and Ed Doughty on Bad Fish in Spinnaker class.

Festivities in Oriental featured Bill Talbert’s famous Parrot Head Rum punch and as always, a good time was had by all.

By Bill GreenBlast from the Past!This month we’ve reprinted the Epitaph for the second quarter of 1977. I encourage you to read the whole newsletter and form your own impressions, but here a few of the things that struck me as I read through.

Back then, as now, BSC was a busy place with active social, racing and cruising groups – that’s if you dis-count the effects of COVID-19 on current activities. Camaraderie and a sense of belonging to a great club were very strong and come through in every article. In 1977 we still didn’t have a clubhouse, but the picnic shelter and the original bathhouse (now the rope room/engine storage building) got lots of use – and required lots of members to keep them clean. We had wet slips, dry slips and even moorings available for members, and there was competition for the best ones.
