PRAYERS
“Bad times, hard times, this is what people keep saying; but let us live well, and times
shall be good. We are the times; Such as we are, such are the times.”
St. Augustine of Hippo
CALENDAR
Eternal rest grant unto
her O Lord and let
perpetual light shine
upon her. May she
rest in peace. Amen.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Joan Guerin, longtime
parishioner and faithful daily Mass attendee, who passed away
July 11. We ask you to keep Joan and her family in your
prayers.
Dear Parishioners,
Now that we have been back to public Masses for
approximately two months, let me take this opportunity to
remind you that the diocese has provided a certain protocol
that is aligned with the statewide mandate requiring that
face masks be worn in public places.
There are exceptions to this mandate for those individuals
with certain health conditions and disabilities. Unless you
have a serious reason for not wearing a mask to Mass, I
encourage you to please wear one and continue to social
distance while in the church.
Because not all parishioners are able to wear masks, while
others are apprehensive about masks not being worn, I am
requiring masks to be worn at the 11:00 am Sunday Mass.
Masks will be encouraged, but not obligatory, at the other
two weekend Masses - Saturday at 4:30 pm and Sunday at
9:00 am.
The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday
Mass remains in effect. The church will continue to be
open weekdays until noon for anyone who wishes to come
spend quiet time before the Blessed Sacrament.
May Christ the Divine Physician protect the vulnerable,
heal the inflicted, and offer an end to this pandemic.
God bless,
Fr. Brian A. Mee
MESSAGE FROM FR . MEE
Eucharistic Testimonial The Eucharist in East Oakland ~ Ivana Ackermann “We don’t have a purificator, so we’ll use this napkin.” My friend and coworker Tom was holding a white paper napkin in his hand. We were getting ready for the first of our monthly Masses in the Oakland Catholic Worker where we lived and worked. I must have looked perturbed because a few days later, Tom would procure a neatly pressed cloth purificator. He would show it to me with a half-endearing, half-patronizing twinkle in his eye as if to say, “See, I care about paying proper respect to the Eucharist, too.” But in the moment, all we had was a napkin.
The Catholic Worker is a place where one often makes due with rundown living quarters, minimal funds and imperfect people. So on this Tuesday afternoon, Jesus made due with picnic ware. Many things had to be done; the dining room needed to be rearranged, the altar decorated, the music rehearsed. Thus the white paper tissue made its way to the credence table.
After the Mass, the room was reverted to its original purpose and we indulged in a lively meal. I had forgotten all about the makeshift purificator until it was time to clean up. As I carried an armful of cups into the kitchen my eyes fell on the napkin. It was laying on top of a stack of dinner plates next to the trash can, one end sprinkled with the Precious Blood, the other end dipped in the spaghetti sauce.

ST. AUGUSTINE PARISH, SPOKANE AUGUST 2020
Year of the Eucharist mtaugustinespokane.com
As a young Catholic convert, I knew about the procedures that ensure anything which contains the Eucharist is treated with proper reverence. I knew that cloth purificators had to be cleaned with special care prior to being thrown into the wash. I had not yet learned the proper procedure for tomato sauce-covered paper purificators. A moment of hesitation passed, then I wrapped the soiled napkin into a clean one and resolved to bury it in the backyard of the staff house, half a block away. I hid the bundle in my hands as I walked home alone in the dark. As always, I marched briskly down the broken-up sidewalk, carefully dodging the double-parked cars, keeping a watchful eye toward the unexpected. Suddenly, I thought of St. Veronica. Surrounded by hostility, we carried a cloth with the blood of Jesus in our hands.
“I knelt down and poured the oil over my organic tomb, much like the anonymous woman had done at the feet of our Savior.”
I buried the fragile shroud under a bush along our fence. In a moment of spontaneous devotion, I ran up to my room to grab a perfumed oil I had received in Israel two years earlier. I felt as though I had joined the women who had gone to the tomb after the Sabbath to anoint the body of their Lord. I knelt down and poured out the oil over my organic tomb, much like an anonymous woman had done at the feet of our Savior.
Not much later I read Cathoic Worker foundress Dorothy Day’s reflection on an equally earthy Mass involving a ceramic coffee cup-chalice. Though not delighted about the irreverence of the moment, she mused, perhaps it happened to remind us that the power of God did not rest on all these appurtenances with which we surround it. That all over the world, in [...] all the troubled, indeed anguished spots of the world.” There Christ is with the poor, the suffering, even in the cup we share together, in the bread we eat. I did not gain such deep theological insights from my napkin. Rather, I consider it a gift. Three times that night, a silent visitor accompanied me as I improvised the burial of Our Lord. In a small, sacramental way, I got to join the women who cared for our Lord’s body in His death. Perhaps it will open my eyes to do so again.
YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST
EUCHARISTIC SAINT OF THE MONTH - ST. ALPHONSUS LIGUORI ITALIAN THEOLOGIAN & DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Born in1696 Naples, St. Alphonsus was a Catholic bishop, musician, lawyer and theologian. He entered the novitiate of St. Philip Neri at 27 and became a priest at 30. He founded the Redemptorists in 1732, where today there are 5,300 Redemptorists serving in 82 countries. Alphonsus suffered with poor eyesight and asthma at an early age, so his father had him educated in the legal profession where he earned a doctorate in canon law. One of St. Alphonsus’ great contributions to the Catholic Church was his masterpiece “The Moral Theology.” He lived until the age of 90. St. Alphonsus is the patron saint of lawyers and confessors.

We pray for all those who work and live from the sea, among

St. Augustine Parish has created a website exclusively
dedicated to this important year. The website came about to
help foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the
Eucharist by bringing together in one place the many Catholic
devotions and catechesis of the Eucharist, and by bringing to
light Eucharistic images hidden in everyday lives. This
includes information about Eucharistic saints and miracles,
the Eucharist in art, and personal stories how the Eucharistic
has impacted one’s life.
To access the website, simply click on the link from the main
page of the parish website at www.staugustinespokane.com.
We have also created monthly supplements for the Year of
the Eucharist. These are available at the entrances to the
church.
Please take one!

Thank you to our dedicated parishioners who work so hard
on the parish gardens. They spend many hours each week
weeding, planting and keeping the flower beds tidy. They
work trimming the rose bushes and always makes sure we
have beautiful flower arrangements in the church.
Thank you!
You may have noticed the ‘new’ piece of marble hanging
on the wall as you walk up the stairs to the balcony. This
piece of rose marble came from the original St. Augustine
altar. We are please to have it on display - be sure and take
a peek!
