Dear Parents/Carers, Our Year 5 students are busily preparing for their dress rehearsals tomorrow, where they will perform to the whole school. This is such a great opportunity for us all to celebrate their hard work and share in the excitement of their live performance. I am very much looking forward to their performance next Thursday 15 th August at the Frankston Arts Centre. The teachers and children have worked very hard to ensure they are well prepared or their performance. A huge thank you to the band of parents who have supported our performers with everything from making props and costumes, to hair and makeup on the day! A big chookasto all those involved in the Wakakirri performance! A gentle reminder to our parents randomly selected by DET, to complete our school Parent Opinion Survey. At this stage, we have less than 25% of parents contacted who have responded. This survey is an annual opportunity for parents to give the school feedback on how we are going. The survey period has been extended and will now close on Sunday 18th August. The Parent Opinion Survey results will be presented to School Council in Term 4. This week I met with the engaged consultant who will be overseeing the oval redevelopment project, to review cosngs and ensure we are on track to commence the project this semester. DET have a well-documented process and protocols for school-funded projects, which we are methodically working our way through. The School Council Management subcommiee met this week and I have updated them on our progress through the process. I will update the School Council at our meeng next week. I am sll confident the school oval redevelopment project will commence this year. Kind regards, Julie OBrien - Principal We are so proud of our Netball team who competed today at the Regional Netball Championships. Looking their finest in the brand new team uniform they hit the court with great confidence. The girls played their best!

A huge thank you to all the families who collected Earn and Learn stickers for us last term. We collected just under 50,000 stickers which is a fabulous effort! We have recently claimed some great resources using our points, and look forward to receiving them in Term 4. As a result of your hard work we will soon be the proud owners of: 7 x digital microscopes and 2 x Getting Started Film Making Kits which include:

We look forward to incorporating these new resources into our learning and teaching programs!

As mentioned in a previous Kalori, we have started a new initiative at school called ‘Play Leaders.’ 36 amazing Year 5 students completed applications to indicate their interest in training to be a Play Leader. In week 1, Mr Hunt and I spent the day training the students. The students participated in team building activities, discussed possible issues, learned how to resolve conflict, played numerous games and prepared for their first rostered session.

Students in the yard can find Play Leaders by looking for their very bright green vests and fabulous badges! They will work in pairs and have great games to play. They will support our younger students in problem solving and helping them make new friends. Thank you to our wonderful Play Leaders for your hard work!

This week we have distributed the new Mount Eliza North Playground Essential Agreement to all classes. This was developed in conjunction with the SRC representatives and will be displayed throughout the school. We have also included a copy in this Kalori so that you can talk to your children about what is expected at school during play times. As always, we

encourage our students to be resilient and problem solve and we also want them to learn how to effectively communicate so that they can work through problems seek the support they need.

A very big congratulations goes to Olivia Anderson who finished 30th out of 91 in the 12 Year Old Girls section of the State Cross Country Championships. A fantastic effort.

Also, well done to our Year 6 Boys Soccer team who finished Runner Up in the Division Soccer final to Mount Martha. Thank you to Alan Seward and Neil Simpson for guiding and coaching the boys over the journey.

Fantastic effort by the girls netball team playing at the Regional Final Championship today. We are all super proud of your teamwork and achievement.

On Tuesday 6th August 2019, 16 MENPS basketball players arrived at Frankston basketball stadium for the 2019 Bulla Hoop Time. Our first game was against Mt Eliza Primary School and we lost 11-13. Our second game we lost to Derinya Primary School, 30-7. The third game we lost to Peninsula Grammar, 20-8, and in the play off for third and fourth we lost to Derinya Primary School, 27-14. All in all, it was a great day (even though we lost) but we would like to thank Mr Hunt and Helen Felmingham for coaching our teams and everyone who was involved in organizing this event and the team players for cooperating and giving it their best on the day. By Blake and Rueben 6P Tuesday the 6th of August was Bulla Hoop Time, where most of the basketballers in Year 6 got together and represented our school in basketball. We met at Frankston basketball courts and started warming up with lay-ups. First, the boys played and the girls watched, then the girls played and the boys watched. Most of the girls games were very close but the boys didn’t win any games unfortunately. The girls won most games and came third. There were 6 schools competing and Derinya came first. It was such an awesome day and I would totally do it again. By Eden 6C On the 6 of August, 8 girls and 8 boys went to Frankston basketball stadium to compete in the basketball competition called Hoop Time. Hoop time is a friendly round robin basketball tournament where most local schools get together to play a handful of games. There are two categories, Future Star and All Stars. All stars are people who play in a domestic basketball team and Future Stars are people who don’t play in a basketball team. I was playing in the All Stars team. We played 5 games on the day. Our first game was against Mt Eliza it was a really close game but in the end we lost by 4 points, our second game was against Derinya Primary School we tried our best the whole game but we ended up losing by 5 points. Our third game was against Kunyung Primary School that game was our first win, it was a tight game but in the end we won 14-8. Our fourth game was against Mt Eliza again and we won 1-18, our last game was against St Thomas Moore, we also won that game 4-12. We came third in our competition and the boys came sixth. Unfortunately, we did not make it to the next round but I do want to say a huge thank you to Mr Hunt for organising such an awesome day and Helen Felmingham for coaching the girls team. Overall it was a really fun day and I wish I could do it again!!! By Jessica 6P

Due to issues relating to anaphylaxis and allergies and in accordance with our Student Anaphylaxis/Allergies Policy this is a reminder that students are encouraged not to swap or share food with others whilst at school. We would like to support those in our community who have food allergies by encouraging everyone to be aware of some of the types of foods that trigger reactions. Food allergy occurs in around 1 in 20 children and in about 2 in 100 adults. The most common triggers are hen's egg, cow's milk, peanuts and tree nuts. Other triggers include seafood, sesame, soy, fish and wheat. Peanuts, tree nuts, seeds and seafood are less likely to be outgrown and tend to be lifelong allergies. Some food allergies can be severe, causing life threatening reactions known as anaphylaxis. (For more information visit http://www.allergy.org.au) There are many lunch box alternatives to the above mentioned foods. It is advisable to save trigger foods for home time treats and avoid sending them to school. We appreciate all efforts in respecting and supporting others and hope this helps provide you with some “food for thought” when next preparing your child’s lunch box.

4A had a visit from international students Celine & Vivienne who are staying with host family Lilliah. They wanted to share their thoughts on our current unit of inquiry:

Stories express ideas, beliefs and values. We heard all about their dedicated long school days, living on campus in dorms during the week. The girls expressed the importance of family even though they only see theirs on the weekends. Celine & Vivienne expressed how important and highly valued their education is in their culture (including lots of testing!). They also shared photos of their dorms and classrooms. 4A realised how lucky we are to have small classes, bright, colourful classrooms, and lots of extra activities at Mount Eliza North Primary.
