Dear fellow Rotarians
Maayong hapon sa tanan!
We have two reasons to celebrate this week. First, our global grant application (GG1874420) for funding to provide cleft lip and palate surgeries to low-income children in Philippines and help the medical professionals receive capacity building training in Philippines and Japan, submitted by the Rotary Club of Cebu and the Rotary Club of Yokosuka, has been approved by The Rotary Foundation. The award is in the amount of US$ 163,000. We received this new last July 27, 2019. Special thanks to IPP Stephen and Dir. Charles Ong for their effort and contribution to make this happen.
Second, we received another approval for our Global Grant application for funding to provide four Vocational Training Team (VTT) visits specializing in Heart Disease that will be conducted at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City, Philippines., submitted by the Rotary Club of Cebu and District 7505, has been approved by The Rotary Foundation. The award is in the amount of US$ 290,300.000. A special shout-out to Sec. Walter Cang for his patience and unwavering determination to have this GG application approved.
We thank God for all these blessings wherein we become instruments of His love for these underprivileged and marginalized children around us. We become His hands and feet to make these medical missions successful. Moving forward, I seek your commitment and voluntary support for all these projects as our team is need of warm bodies to assist in big and or small efforts pushing this up to its completion. Once again let me say this to all members and friends of Rotary Club Cebu, this is the avenue where one gets to be engaged and eventually become Rotarized. This will be our opportunity to capture those moments of serving the club and the communities.
Congratulations to RC Cebu, Cheers!

INVOCATION
Today we pray that we receive Your
special blessing because we are
committed to be a real service
organization to help humankind. May
each of us in our daily routine come to
know the joy of caring and sharing with
others not as fortunate as we are. May
our motto that includes serving, caring
and sharing be for us life in service.
Amen.
NASUDNONG AWIT

Ang mga buntod mo ug lapyahan, sa

Silaw sa adlaw ug bituon sa

dughan mo. Pakatam-ison namo nga

August 2019
We have some very good problems that I want to discuss with you. The number of Rotary global grant requests is exploding. Rotarians are seeing the amazing impact of our grants, and they want to harness the power of global grants to take on ambitious projects.
One crucial aspect of our global grants is the emphasis on sustainability when planning a project. When we come together to tackle a problem, we do not just drop off a check and leave. We change lives. We bring sustainable solutions. The growth in the number of applications for global grants is a good problem to have; it shows Rotarians' dedication to service. But to fund more global grants, we need to keep The Rotary Foundation growing.
Another good problem we have is how best to support Rotarians' desire to provide relief in the face of disasters. Through our disaster response program, clubs can get grants from a new fund when a disaster strikes — but only if you fund it. We can help our fellow Rotarians rebuild quickly, but we need you to step up.
And we are so close to ending polio forever. All of us have done great things in our lives. But just imagine that you make the donation that funds those final drops that rid the world of polio forever. You will never do anything so great and so important in your life. ……continue on page 8

WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK…
BUSINESS MEETING By: Walter Cang
Well the first month of Pres. Mike’s term has come and gone and our
attendance and guest numbers are stellar! Well done everyone. Our
meetings are indeed a perfect mix of light moments, naughty banter,
serious discussions and learning moments.
Before we had our guest speaker, Dir. Edward Tan Ting who chairs our
Service Project Committee conducted a quick briefing on the state of
affairs with our club’s service projects. He started by outlining the
importance of conduct service projects as a club, the need to balance the
workload against the ability of our members to take part in. And to look
into ways we can raise the funds and manage the risks. He then shared
the different projects that were ongoing as the Rotary year started, what
has since been completed and which ones are still ongoing and expected
to close. He then moved to what he had identified as possible projects we
can start this year. It was a hefty list and presented a lot of opportunities
for the club and our leaders to choose from.
Our guest speaker, Ivy Llena, was no stranger to us as she was also our
guest last year. Back then she took us on a journey of self-discovery
P a g e | 5 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020
through an activity that elicited much laughter and fun. This year she
came with her partner who got the ball rolling with an ice breaker, known
as the different types of handshakes. As in the past, it took us off our seats
and through a series of handshakes, starting with the business handshake,
then the Hug-handshake, the Dutch-handshake and lastly, the French
handshake. No doubt most of us were thoroughly disappointed with the
last exercise, offset by the guffaws around the room!
Her talk centered around Employee Retention, something many
organizations now face with the influx of a younger and internet exposed
workforce. Her message was fairly clear, as it was based on human
psychology and behavioral science as we know it. One her statement at
the start was “We can’t stop employees from leaving unless we have a plan
to make them stay.” Simple and direct. She briefly touched on why it is
important for talent to remain, and the warning that by next year, 70% of
workforce will be millennials, with a mind many of us are not able to fully
grasp.
What followed next was a pyramid chart called Maslow’s Hierarchy of
Needs that defined what matters to your workforce, and how it maps to
P a g e | 6 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF RC CEBU www.rotarycebu.org RY 2019-2020
the typical work conditions and environment. She also pointed out what
companies are doing to combat this concern and the gaps found in some
approaches. She provided suggestions and ideas how companies can use
the information to tweak their programs and cut down their turnovers.
In the end, we know there is no magic pill and only through a series of
steps and understanding what makes your workforce tick will be the
answer. It was a compelling message and many of our members reached
out to her after adjournment to book her time to continue the discussion
into what will apply to their organization.

The event was so
insightful and
informative due to the quality of Rotarian speakers that were lined-up by the

Protocol taught us the proper

helped us to be more conscious
on the way we behave and the

on Fund Management taught us

topic gave us the story and impact behind this campaign that made it as one of the
flagship campaigns of Rotary.
During the induction night of District Officers and Presidents, DG Philip Tan encourages
Rotaractors to embrace the challenges and hardships in service. As he quoted "No Pain,
No Gain", Rotaractors should not only seek the fun and fellowship aspect on why they
join the organization. Instead, the focus should be on service above self to others and
showcase of leadership amidst sacrifices and trials that may come along the way.

(A joke a day keeps the doctor away)
Stomach ache
A little girl went up to her mother
one day while holding her
stomach saying, "Mommy, my
stomach hurts."
Her mother replied, "That's
because it's empty. You have to
put something into it!"
She then prepared a bowl of soup.
Later that day the pastor and his
wife came over for dinner.
The pastor began to feel bad.
Holding his head he said, "I have
such a terrible headache!"
The little girl looked up at him,
giving him the sweetest smile that
any little child could give. Then
she said:
"That's because it's empty. You
have to put something into it!"
