AUGUST 6, 2017
THE
TRANSFIGURATION
OF THE LORD
AUGUST 6, 2017
In the Scriptures so many manifestations of the
Lord’s glory and his majesty take place on a mountain.
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of
the Lord in the presence of his three closest disciples,
Peter, James and John on Mount Tabor. This manifes-
tation of his glory was experienced by these disciples
as: “his face shone like the sun and his clothes became
white as light. And behold Moses and Elijah appeared
to them conversing with him.” It is striking to hear
Peter’s response: “Lord, it is good that we are here.”
If we had been there on that mountain we too
might have had the same response as Peter. Shortly
before this experience Peter had made a profound pro-
fession of faith in response to Jesus’ question: “Who
do you say that I am?” As you remember, Peter said:
“You are the Christ, the son of the living God.” He
had begun to experience a clarification of his belief
through an insight given to him by God the Father and
now on this mountain he was able to see with his eyes
what this belief really meant. We can see why he
would feel that “it is good that we are here” and even
want to build three tents to settle down for a while and
bask in the glory of the transfigured Lord and the
Prophets.
Of course this feeling was short lived when
they actually heard the voice from the cloud say: “This
is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; lis-
ten to him.” It was one thing to experience Jesus as
transfigured in glory, it was quite another to hear God
the Father proclaim Jesus as his “beloved Son”. This
voice led them to fall to the ground in fear. It was
only Jesus touching them and saying: “Rise, and do
not be afraid” that brought them back to their senses.
We can imagine the radical contrast of this glo-
rious transfiguration experience with the hopeless pas-
sion and death experience on another mountain –
Mount Calvary. As Jesus counseled, it was only after
he had been raised from the dead that the disciples
would be able to make any sense of what took place
on these two mountains – the glory of transfiguration
to the unselfish sacrifice of love on the cross to the
return to the Glory that was Jesus’ from the beginning
of time.
God the Father told Peter, James and John and
he tells us to place our undivided faith in this his
“beloved Son” and to “listen to him”. It is “good that
we are here” to hear the words of the Father, we have
only to take them seriously and carry them out.
Over 100 parishioners came to our Parish Pic-
nic last Sunday and needless to say: “a good time was
had by all”. I want to thank Kevin Wisniewski and
Don Guerra for arriving at the park early to roast the
pig, Leslie & Adele Stokan and Sharon Staff for orga-
nizing the pavilion and food, Mickey McGrane for
providing the sports equipment, and Ryan Silvio for
doing a great job of clean-up and recycling. It was a
great celebration of our parish family.
This week I will be on Spiritual Retreat with a
number of Capuchin friars at the Villa Maria Retreat
Center. I will have all of you in my prayers and please
keep me in yours for a time of abundant graces.

OKTOBERFEST RAFFLE
In conjunction with the Oktoberfest Fundraiser on Sat-urday September 30thwe will be having a Money Raf-fle. The prizes for the Raffle will be $1500, $500 and $250. Your help is needed to make this Raffle a suc-cess. Tickets are: 1 for $2.00, 3 for $5.00 and 12 for $20.00. Each household of our parish is being asked to sell at least one book of 12 chances. If you have not already claimed the envelope in the back of church with your name on it and having a book of chances and a letter explaining the fundraiser, please do so after Mass this weekend. If anyone lives near you and you could take the envelope to them that would save on you having to mail the envelope this week. Be sure to re-mind folks that they do not need to be present at the Oktoberfest Fundraiser to win. The stubs and the money for the chances can be placed in an envelope and returned through the collection basket or they can be mailed to the parish office. There are plenty of extra books of chances available in the back of church or at the parish office. Thanks for your help with this im-portant fundraiser.
BACK TO SCHOOL PROJECT
As we have done in the past few years, we are offering support to some of the children at our two community schools: Arsenal & Woolslair Elementary. Many of the children who attend these schools are unable to buy uniforms or needed hygiene products…some are newly arrived to our country and have these basic needs. This year we would like to support these schools by pur-chasing uniforms and hygiene products that can be dis-tributed to any children who may come to school with these needs. By “Uniforms” we are not saying clothing purchased from a uniform company but rather a par-ticular color of pants, skirts and shirts that can be worn at these schools. There are two types of tags. One
lists a variety of hygiene products needed and an-
other group of tags list either Boy or Girl, a size and
a label that lists approved school uniform styles and
color. You can choose from the list on the tag which
ONE ITEM to purchase. Stores like Target and
Walmart often have a section of school uniform
clothing. The most important element is the approved color of the clothing item. If you are able to help, you can take a tag and purchase and return the item listed by Sunday August 20th for distribution to the children. These items should not be wrapped. Containers for receiving the items will be in the outer vestibule during the next few weekends.
The Transfiguration
In the mystery of the Transfiguration Jesus reveals to
his disciples that he is the Son of God and that he will
come again in glory at the end of the age. Yet, this
magnificent sight occurs only after Jesus tells his fol-
lowers that they must take up their crosses in order to
follow him. Jesus wants us to share in his glory, while
at the same time encourages us to be prepared for the
challenges that arise along the way. Join Bishop
David Zubik in prayer and worship at one of the On
Mission for The Church Alive! Summer Sessions and
continue to prepare your heart for the big changes that
will soon take place in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The
changes may challenge us, but we trust in the work of
the Holy Spirit to provide the gifts and resources for
the Church to grow and thrive. The Summer Sessions
will be held from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on the follow-
ing days: Thursday, August 24 at Saint Mary of the
Assumption, Glenshaw; Monday, August 28 at Saint
Thomas More, Bethel Park; Tuesday, August 29 at
Saint Margaret Mary, Moon Township; Wednesday,
August 30 at Saint Kilian, Adams/Cranberry Town-
ships. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more
it and to stay informed.
