In last Sunday’s Gospel, we heard Peter’s profession of faith that Jesus is the Christ and the “Son of God.” He spoke for himself and for the other disciples. What Peter didn’t realize was that his profession of faith was also a commitment. What we hear in today’s Gospel has to do with Jesus’ fidelity to His being the Christ and the Son of God, as well as the first calling of the disciples to living out their fidelity to their name, their call. Jesus begins indicating slowly the radical dimensions of His being Messiah. They get the picture that He must go to Jerusalem (the name literally means House of Peace) and face the music of His dignity and destiny. He is to suffer because of His mission, be killed because of His message, and be raised because of His obedience. Peter, whom we saw affirm Jesus as Messiah, now tries to prevent the mission’s final act of love and fidelity. Peter, the Rock, now becomes Peter the “block.” Jesus says that He is going with or without His followers. A general dispensation from the Sunday Massobligation will remain in place for those whocannot attend Mass. Anyone attending Massdoes so at his or her own risk. Vulnerable, at-risk and otherwise concerned persons shouldremain home. Anyone who has even theslightest symptoms or feelings of sicknessmust remain home.

Jesus reproached Peter in the Gospel today:You are an obstacle to me. You are thinkingnot as God does, but as human beings do. Jesus first told him: Get behind me. We canonly successfully think according to the mindof God if we get behind Jesus. In the finalanalysis, the reproach of Jesus to Peter isat the same time an invitation to follow him.“To get behind a person” is to follow theperson. There might be things in our life rightnow where we follow “the way humanbeings do” like not being able to forgivesomeone who has hurt us, the need toacquire things, to get even, etc. We can onlychange those “human ways” by gettingbehind Jesus and following his lead. There isno other way. This means, too, that I have toeliminate my myopic view of Jesus. Thereis a tendency sometimes to subscribe to animage of Christ that will only work to ourliking like what Peter did. Yes, we like thatpicture of Jesus who feeds the hungry, whocures the leper, but not the picture of himwho is carrying the cross, who will suffer anddie. Why? Because the same calling andcommitment are demanded of us as well. If Iam behind Jesus following his lead, walkingon the same path that he treads is not easy, comfortable and convenient. The path ofChristian discipleship has the cross as itscenter (not that we are masochists) becauseit is only through dying from our ownselfishness and self-centeredness that wewill experience the promise of eternal life.

Discipleship is really ironic — the more wedie from ourselves, the more we becomealive. When it feels like the cross is too heavyto carry and one feels like joining the clamorof Jeremiah in the first reading, “you dupedme Lord, and I let myself be duped”, themore we have to persevere in walking thepath of Jesus. As an authentic follower ofChrist, what usually prevails— your will orGod’s will? Are you behind Jesus, or are webehind someone else? – Fr. Cary

Gregory was the prefect of Rome beforehe was 30. After five years in office, heresigned, founded six monasteries on hisSicilian estate, and became a Benedictinemonk in his own home at Rome.

He was ordained a priest and then wenton to serve six years in the East as apapal representative in Constantinople. At the age of 50, he was elected pope bythe clergy and people of Rome. Duringhis papacy, he greatly surpassed theemperors in improving the welfare ofthe people of Rome. Gregory was directand firm. He removed unworthy priestsfrom office, forbade taking money formany services, and emptied the papaltreasury to ransom prisoners of theLombards and care for persecuted Jewsand the victims of plague and famine. Hewas very concerned about theconversion of England, sending 40monks from his own monastery. He isknown for his reform of the liturgy andfor strengthening respect for doctrine. The mainstream form of Western chant, standardized in the late 9th century, wasattributed to Pope Gregory I and so tookthe name of Gregorian chant.

Legend has it that while St. Gregory wascelebrating St Mark’s feast day (April 25), hehad a craving for cherries. Unfortunately, noneof the cherry trees in his area were bearingfruit. The servants and gardeners were at aloss. As the legend goes, one gardener waswandering the gardens and was visited by StMark. The Saint heard of his plight and blessedthe tree, and immediately fruit appeared. Stilltoday, St. Gregory is associated with cherries!
