Inside this issue:
Welcome - We are so excited to be back on campus with your
children this August. A lot has changed in the past five
months. Temperature scans, masks, electrostatic foggers,
sanitizers, and social distancing are the new normal for this
season. God has not changed, though. He is still in control,
seated on His throne. How wonderful to share that truth
with our children here this year!
We are doing all we can to keep our students and teachers safe
and healthy. I covet your prayers and effort in doing so too.
Please do not send a child with any symptoms to school. Please
utilize the online option if an extended illness impacts your child.
Please help keep your child away from situations with
potential infection during nights and weekends. Thank you.
Psalm 133 states “How good and pleasing it is when people
live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down the beard.” We treasure our partnership with
your family, your church and our school. It is the best possible
situation for our children to hear the same message from
church, home and school. Thanks again for partnering in
Preparing Hearts and Minds.
Mr. Vande Pol
Welcome to the 2020-2021

Dropping off items: Tables are located right inside the front lobbies of the middle & high school buildings. Any items that need to be dropped off to students (lunches, gym bags, instruments, homework, etc.) should be left on the appropri-ate table. It is your student’s responsibility to pick up the item. Please make sure your student’s name is clearly visible on the item. This will eliminate contact with office personnel and limit the number of people in and out of our buildings. No outside food deliveries of any kind are allowed.
Athletics: We have our first home game coming up next week. Please watch for an email at the beginning of the week from the Athletic Department with instructions and Covid protocols for our home sporting events.
Parent Access in High School Building: Due to Covid, we are not allowing parents into the high school building unless you have an appointment. If your high school student has an appointment or needs to sign out:
Please call or email Mrs. Heintz ([email protected] or 941-792-5454 ext. 110) ahead of time and she will call them out of class. They will sign themselves out in the office and can meet you outside.
If they are coming to school late, they can give their doctor's note to Mrs. Heintz and sign in themselves. If they do not have a doctor’s note, a parent will need to call or email Mrs. Heintz so their attend-ance can be marked accordingly.

The BCS School Counseling Office is offering a Freshman Parent/Student workshop. The purpose of this evening is to provide you with important information to help students prepare for a successful high school career and better assist in guiding through the college admission process. It is highly recommended for both students and parents to attend the meeting to hear the same message. Some of the most frequently asked questions to be discussed include:
What is the difference in unweighted and weighted GPAs?
What is the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program?
What is a student profile?
How can I earn community service hours?
What is the difference between Honors and AP courses?
These workshops are always informative and hopefully provide better direction for both students and parents before diving into the college admissions process. The Freshman Parent/Student Workshop will be held on Monday, September 21 at 6:00 p.m. in Wichers Auditorium. I always do my best to keep the meeting at one hour or less. I look forward to seeing you there!

BCS’s Soaring AP Scores
At the end of last year, 115 BCS students took Advanced Placement (AP) exams in 15 subject areas. Advanced Placement is a program in the United States and International program created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. Colleges and univer-sities may grant course credit to students who obtain high scores on the AP exams. We are pleased to announce our students had a passing rate of 86% far exceeding the state and global passing rates. In addition, a total of 43 current and recent BCS graduates have earned 2020 AP Scholars Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.
AP Scholar is granted to students who earned a 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. BCS is proud to announce the following students who received this high honor: Chloe Baxter Ashlyn Prewitt Emma Vande Pol Sam Childers Rachel Rowland Gislaine Velasquez Liam Emmons Nate Schewe Savannah Woodland Hannah Hamilton Zach Seagreaves Abby Leahy Samantha Storo Kaleb Orduno Hailey Stovall Laura Perkins Victoria Thompson
AP Scholar with Honor is granted to students who have earned an average of 3.25 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four of these exams. Congratulations to the following students who were the awarded this honor: Emma Bivona Ethan Marshall Andrew Fort Kyla Mays Nico Giraldo Olivia Sand Gabe Holton Emma Swaagman Knox Johnson Luke Williams Kelli Kern Tia Wingate Annaleise Linkenhoker
AP Scholar with Distinction is granted to students who have earned an average of at least a 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. We are thrilled to announce the follow-ing students who received this high honor: Cat Calhoun Zachary Vanzant Dylan Cunard Cleide Velasquez Kendy DeHaan Jessica Vorbeck Luke Evangelista Aidan Williams Izzy Gonzalez Sunnie Woske Sheldon Spencer
This year, we had four teachers who had a 100% pass rate, Karen Lord, Regina Hays, Jim Wubben and Eric Gelston. Our Advanced Placement teachers attend workshops and conferences in the summer away from their family to be more prepared for the classroom. They meet with our students on Saturdays to have group sessions and practice tests, and some even make breakfast for all of their students on exam days. Thank you for all of your hard work and amazing dedication to our students! Congratulations to all of these students and their teachers who did an excellent job preparing for these exams!
AP Capstone is College Board’s Advanced Placement diploma program. This diploma program is in addition to your basic high school diploma.
Students graduating with the AP Capstone Diploma requires students to take and pass four AP classes and exams. Specifically, AP Capstone includes
two foundation courses – AP Seminar and AP Research to enhance four subject-specific AP Courses (in any subject) for a total of six AP courses.
The AP Seminar and AP Research classes are the main distinguishing features of AP Capstone. These courses give students additional skills to use in
other AP classes and college, but they are not based in specific subjects.
AP Seminar Overview – In AP Seminar, you’ll develop analytic and inquiry skills, exploring two to four issues chosen by you and your teacher.
The class focuses on themes based on student interests, local and/or civic issues, global or international topics, and concepts from other AP courses.
For example, some topics might include: Should people own exotic pets? How should the fast food industry be regulated? Do video games cause
teens to be violent? Any of these topics would draw from multiple subjects (social studies, science, and ethics) and allow one to look at issues through
many different lenses.
During the course students complete a team project, an individual paper and presentation, and take a final AP exam. The AP Seminar Exam score is
based on all three components and is reported on the standard 1-5 AP scoring scale.
AP Research Overview –Students must take AP Seminar before they take AP Research. While Seminar introduces students to discussion, research,
and presentation skills, AP Research allows students to design, plan, and conduct a year-long research-based investigation on a topic that interests
them.
Students build on skills from AP Seminar by learning about
research methodology, using ethical research practices, and
analyzing the information found to write and defend their
argument.
For the research paper, students can really dig into a topic
already studied in a different AP course, or come up with
their own topic that combines different subjects.
At the end of the research investigation, students will write
a paper of about 5,000 works, then present and defend it.
The AP Research Exam score is based on the paper, presen-
tation, and defense and is reported on the standard 1-5 AP
scoring scale. The paper and presentation will be the exam.
The Class of 2020 had the first BCS graduates of the AP Capstone Diploma. Congratulations to the following students:
Also, Congratulations to the Class of 2020 graduates who earned the AP Capstone Certificate.
