When Joshua today speaks of his household serving the Lord, he meant not just those people who lived inside his walls or those related to him by blood or marriage; he meant slaves or servants and their families, and anyone indebted to him in any way. Even his livestock and other possessions would be conse- crated to service of God. In our world, we value allow- ing individuals their freedom to choose how they live, and wouldn’t think of offering our pets to the service of God. But, as we discern our vocation as disciples bap- tized into Christ, we can come to realize how far-ranging the “households” of our lives still are: how we act toward our spouses, children, roommates or anyone we live with; our behavior with neighbors; or in public as we en- counter many “strangers” every day in stores or traffic who suddenly are “next door” to us. How can we use our time, our resources, or gifts for selfless reasons rather than personal gain? No matter what life our witness to the Good News calls us to, we all have a “household” that must be consecrated to service of the Lord our God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. PENSAMIENTO DE LA SEMANA: CASAS AL SERVICIO DE DIOS

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Letter from the Archbishop Cordileone to the faithful re-garding the recent national revelations of child abuse. My Dear People of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, The recent reports of episcopal negligence and malfeasance in the face of clerical sexual abuse, coupled

with some reports of bishops themselves guilty of sexual predation, have reopened old wounds and inflicted new ones on victims, their families, the Catholic faithful at large, and indeed, the larger society. This has been fur-ther fueled by a spirit of raw ambition on the part of some, who will stop at nothing to advance their careers and climb the ecclesial corporate ladder over investing them-selves in serving the people of God. While attending to policies and procedures is necessary, what is called for at this time is penance in reparation for sins against faith and morals. Last year, I consecrated the Archdiocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I now ask our priests and people to engage in prayer, penance and adoration as an act of reparation for sins against chastity, in accordance with our Mother Mary’s wishes. I repeat here what I asked of you then, and implore you even more earnestly to join me in: Praying the rosary daily – for families; Practicing Friday penance by abstain-ing from eating meat and one other additional act of fast-ing; Spending one hour of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament at least once a week. While I pledge to attend to policies and their observance, we all must be engaged at this time on the spiritual level. Without prayer, penance and adoration in reparation for the horrendous sins ram-pant in our Church for very many years now, any efforts of the temporal order will be meaningless. In the mean-time, I ask you, our people to stay close to your parish priest. Our priests make great sacrifices to serve their people with generosity and compassion. They are there for you, attentive to providing you pastoral care. I am grateful to them for their labors in the Lord’s vineyard, and pray that the divine assistance may be with them as they minister to you during this time of crisis. Sincerely yours in our Lord, Most Reverend Salvatore Cordileone Arch-bishop of SF The complete letter is available in: (https://sfarchdiocese.org/).

A great big Thank You to Natalie Dean for the Garden Project that is located in the back of the old Con-vent building.

21stSunday in Ordinary Time “If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today

whom you will serve…As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (J 24:15)

When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a partner in the work of the Lord. A partner is a person who in-vests time in prayer every day, joyfully participates in charitable works and generously supports the parish and Church mission. If we say we serve God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it!
