EXCITING NEW PARTNERSHIP

The ParkSide Centre Board of Directors is happy to announce that we have formed a partnership with United Way Centraide North East Ontario through the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund that will allow us to ex-pand ParkSide Centre Without Walls program offerings and to accommodate more people in in our online programs.

Recently, the Province of Ontario moved to Stage 3 of its Phase 2: Restart plan. Although most businesses have been allowed to open around the Province, there have been no set guidelines provided for Seniors Centres. The situation can change daily and with the increase in positive Covid-19 cases in the region recently, the Board of Directors continues

to monitor the situation and will make a decision to re-open when it is prudent to do so. The health and safety of our members, volun-teers and staff is of paramount concern and the decision to reopen will not be made until we are reasonably certain that all risks of doing so have been mitigated."

CHICKENS AND RATS

When I was living at my Cousin Richard’s farm, in 1979, I decided to be a “real” farm girl and keep chickens. A friend and I took our-selves off to a livestock auction in order to procure said chickens. Livestock auctions are loud, smelly and fascinating. All those cute little lambs bouncing around in a pas-ture come from large, matted, rank smelling adults. Maybe they turn into them too if they don’t become dinner for someone.

My friend, focused on my task, went straight to the fowl area and was looking at large, white, oddly elegant Leghorns. The rooster cast a beady eye upon all comers, turned and stalked to a different corner of his cage. There were a couple of astonishing beautifully colored and huge roosters of un-known, to me, types hustling their females into corners and glaring at us humans. My friend extolled their size, sleekness and obvious health. Nope, not interested. I kept moving and in a small pen I found MY chickens. Bantams, they were. Just little guys and absolutely gorgeous! My rooster, I knew he would be my rooster, became George. He was not George because he looked a bit like any King George I have ever seen but he was kingly in his own way and I felt the name George

suited him. He was so black and shiny that when he moved some of his feathers glinted dark green. He cocked his head at me and I was lost.

Home we went. George, his court of 9 ladies (who bitched in a quiet bantam-like squawking the whole way in their cartons), my friend and I. We stopped at the library as I believed I needed information on keeping chickens alive and healthy. George stuck his head out of his carton and looked upon me pity-ingly.

I fixed up a lovely coop for my chickens in an old horse stall under the drive shed, with lots of sweet smelling hay, roosts and nests. I made certain there was nowhere for a fox to get in and put notices on the doors that they needed to be securely closed. There was lots of light in the coop and after a few days I started to bring treats every morning. They seemed to love cucumber and tomato slices. They also seemed to love the flies that they caught on the windows and chicken bones which gave me a bit of a turn.

After a few weeks I felt confident enough to let them out into the pasture behind the coop.

CHICKENS & RATS CONT...

The grass was so tall all I could see was the grass moving as they rushed about. Some of them re-turned to chew on the grasshoppers they had caught. I will say that the egg yolks were always brighter when the chickens had caught in-sects. It seemed a tremendously good deal for all of us that the chickens could turn food scraps, bugs and chicken feed into really delicious eggs.

Then one day while I was gathering eggs I noticed that there was a trail of grain leading to a hole under one of the stalls and one of the eggs was cracked. I put the egg on the floor, expecting the chickens to eat it but they wouldn’t go near it. The next day the grain trail was more pro-nounced and the chickens seemed mildly distressed. I know it is hard to imagine but I had gone to those chickens twice a day for 3 months and they treated me like staff. Now they were crowding around my feet and huddling away from the hole under the stall partition. Their egg production had fallen off but none

of them seemed to be ill. This went on for a few more days until I actu-ally saw a rat. My chickens all got behind me and I threw my bucket at the rat. I won’t say they cheered because they didn’t but I began to worry.

My cousin said that I should put broken glass down the rat hole and they would stop coming. So I did. Of course, we drank the wine first before we smashed the bottles and he help me shove broken glass down the hole.

The next morning, I ambled down to my chicken coop with their breakfast and discovered a pile of broken glass in the middle of my path. What went through my mind? Hard to say as it was so quick but I made a decision as I opened the coop door to be greeted by my anxious flock. I changed their water and put out their feed then stood in the middle of the co-op and said, in a loud voice, “OK you rats, here’s the deal. I will bring a little extra grain every morning and put it by your hole. If you leave my chickens and their eggs alone I will not call an exterminator or take any other actions against you.” Then I left and cleaned up the glass. I have to say that I felt like an idiot talking to a bunch of rats but the deal worked. My chickens calmed down. Egg production re-sumed and I don’t think the rats took any more eggs but if they did it was so seldom that it wasn’t no-ticeable.

I now have a much greater respect of the intelligence of animals, spe-

cifically rats but my chick-ens weren’t too stupid ei-ther. I was a bit slow pick-ing up on the clues but, af-ter all, I’m only human.

PHISING AND SMISHING SCAMS

Be on the lookout. Messages are easily fabricated!

As we spend more time online, fraudsters are getting more creative with scams in the digital space.

Phishing is when you get an unso-licited email that claims to be from a legitimate organization, such as financial institutions, businesses or government agencies. Scammers ask you to provide or verify, either via email or by clicking on a web link, personal or financial infor-mation, like your credit card num-ber, passwords and social insur-ance number.

Smishing is the same thing, except it occurs via text messages.

These messages often copy the tone and logo of organizations you trust, and usually include a call to action. They take many shapes and forms but the bottom line is that they seek your personal details.

Tips to protect yourself:

Know that reputable organizations will never ask for your per-sonal infor-mation through email or text.

Ignore communications from un-known contacts.

Delete suspicious messages as they can carry viruses.

Don't reply to spam messages, even to unsubscribe, and don't open any attachments or follow any links.

To verify a hyperlink without click-ing, hover your mouse over it. Carefully check if it is accurate.

Update your antivirus software on all devices.

Never use the phone number or email address provided in the sus-picious message—use contact infor-mation listed on verified websites.

LATE NIGHTS, LITTLE SLEEP FOR RAIL FANS

“Your attention, please. First call for passengers on Air Canada (AC) Flight 132 to Toronto, now board-ing at Gate 25, departing at 23:59 Hours (11:59 PM). First call for passengers on Air Canada (AC) Flight 132 to Toronto, now board-ing at Gate 25, departing at 23:59 Hours (11:59 PM).” Thus was I greeted as I entered the departure area of Vancouver International Airport at 23:25 Hours (11:25 PM) Tuesday. I’d have a lot less time to wait for my flight tonight than I’d had on Thursday night when I flew here from Toronto. The time be-tween my flights had been fantastic in more ways than one. Since climbing out of bed and going to work on Thursday morning, I’d managed to get a total of maybe twenty-four hours sleep.

My lonnnnnnng weekend had been planned two months earlier, in Au-gust 1988 when I booked a ticket on a double-headed steam train for a trip from Vancouver to Kamloops to Jasper to Prince George to 100-Mile House and on to North Van-couver (North Van). A Vancouver tour operator had arranged the trip in conjunction with VIA Rail Cana-da, who would supply some of the coaches and all of the on-board crew; Canadian National Rail

(CNR), over whose tracks much of the trip would run; BC Rail, over whose tracks the trip would con-clude and who provided most of the coaches and steam locomotives (both ex-CPR [Canadian Pacific Railway]) Royal Hudson #2850 and #3716; and Rocky Mountain Steam Train Society, owners of ex-CNR #6060, who wanted to get #6060 home to Jasper after she had been stored at BC Rail’s steam shop in North Van following her display at Steam Expo in 1986. This would be a unique trip, as the long-est (in distance and, as it turned out, possibly in time also) double-headed, main line steam-powered passenger train in North America in decades. After work on Thursday, I’d had supper and hopped the Airport Ex-press Bus to Toronto’s Pearson Air-port. Shortly after I arrived, an an-nouncement was made that our flight to Vancouver would be de-layed two hours while we waited for a plane to come in and be serviced since the one originally scheduled for us had been pulled out of ser-vice due to mechanical problems.

LATE NIGHTS CONT...

Vancouver International Airport was held open for our flight to ar-rive before closing for the night. I took a taxi to my motel in North Van where I got to my room about 01:30 hours (1:30 AM). After just a few hours of sleep, it was time to rise and catch the bus to the SeaTrain terminal, transfer to the SeaTrain (ferry) across to the SkyTrain terminal in Vancouver, and the SkyTrain to the Vancouver VIA Rail station for a 06:00 hour check-in. While standing in line, I spotted my friends Richard and Marie from Washington whom I’d met in South Africa and again at Steam Expo. We managed to get seats together once we were aboard and enjoyed each others companionship throughout the trip. Because the organizers had underestimated the time needed to get everybody checked in, we were late departing. About two hours into our trip, we met with another major delay. One of the coaches near the front of the train derailed. Fortunately, no one was injured but it took several hours for the remaining cars to be pulled clear, the derailed one re-railed, pulled off the train and hauled back for repairs. The train was reassembled, the passengers from the derailed car were trans-ferred to the other cars, and we proceeded in the alternating rain and drizzle to Kamloops. Our ‘Welcome to Kamloops’ dinner went on as planned except for be-ing delayed until we arrived and we had a good night in this city. The next morning we arrived at the sta-

tion in time for a 08::00 (8:00 AM) departure to find only the coaches waiting for us. We were going no-where for now. Since we could learn nothing from the station master about where the locomotives were, some of the pas-sengers took a taxi to the rail yard. There they learned that the person responsible for assigning a storage track for the locomotives for the night had underestimated their weight and had assigned them to a seldom-used track at the side of the yard, where they were out of the way. Unfortunately, this track could not support the weight put on it and the rails simply flipped over onto their sides, dropping each locomo-tive off the tracks onto the ground. It took about four hours to get both locos back onto the rails and cou-pled onto our train. We left town about five hours late. When we got underway, I asked the tour manager what the plans were for those of us needing to make air or train connections at the end of the tour if we were still running late, since my flight to Toronto was nonrefundable, non-exchangeable and I was expected at the office on Wednesday morning. He was opti-mistic that we would be on time by then but if we were still late, I could go from Squamish into Vancouver with the caterer when he delivered the dinner for the final night. That sounded fine to me and I believed that he would communicate that plan to the caterer sometime dur-ing the weekend.

LATE NIGHTS, CONT...

We pulled out of town about 13:00 hours and had lunch. Later, I tried shooting video from an open door-way but got only about fifteen minutes before the batteries died from the cold of the wind chill. That was all the video I could shoot since my AC adapter/charger had a polarized plug which didn’t fit the old style outlets on board. Again, the day was completely overcast and we saw some flakes of snow flying by as we headed north to Jasper. In the evening, the sky cleared to reveal the full moon. For some of us, the highlight of the en-tire trip occurred about midnight. We were traveling along a valley between two mountain ranges. The engineers apparently appreciated the setting as much as did the pas-sengers. They performed a short concert of steam whistling back and forth between the locos. The wonderful echoes off the snow-covered mountains, under the glow of the full moon linger in our memories to this day. It was a fan-tastically romantic and beautiful experience which Richard, Marie, and I will likely always remember. Needless to say, our Welcome to Jasper dinner was cancelled when we didn’t arrive at our hotels until about 02:30 hours (2:30 AM). Our baggage arrived even later, mine reaching my room at 03:00 hours. When we left the train, the tour manager told us we would depart an hour later than scheduled, leav-ing at 09:00 instead of 08:00 since we were so late arriving. Gee! We could sleep in a whole hour!

Arriving at the station about 08:30 hours, we learned of another delay. #6060 had developed mechanical problems on the run from Kam-loops and would not go any fur-ther. She would be coupled onto the head end of the train for pho-tos but then would return to the shop for repairs as #2860 alone pulled the train to Prince George. The photo session was held and we hit the rails about 09:45 hours. As the day advanced, the sun came out and things were fine until just after lunch, at Red Pass Jct. There we sat for about an hour while the crew waited for a hot bearing on #2860 to cool sufficiently that they could repair it before we proceed-ed. Just at dusk, we did manage to get in one photo stop, the first and only one so far. We arrived in Prince George relatively early, only 3 hours late! After dinner, we re-tired to our rooms to try to catch up on some sleep at the end of Day Three. Day Four dawned bright and clear, now that we were to be running exclusively on BC Rail. Was this a good omen? Our train backed out the CNR track from the station and around the wye to get onto the BC Rail line south to 100-Mile House. We had a glorious morning rolling along through golden stands of as-pens & poplars, past ponds and creeks reflecting the beautiful blue sky and fluffy white clouds. Things were going well, too well.

LATE NIGHTS CONT...

Just after lunch, we came to a stop. A few minutes later, word came down the train that a lubricating injector on #3716 had malfunc-tioned. With a little discussion among the engine crews, it was de-cided to have one member ride the running board and operate the in-jector manually so that we would get to our night’s destination. This was done and running at reduced speed, we managed to get to 100-Mile House only about an hour late. Our final day started with a hazy sun and gradually clouded over completely. We stopped for photos at the last standing enclosed, wooden water tower on BC Rail, one of the very last of its kind any-where in North America, just after breakfast. Early that afternoon, we stopped for more photos at a high steel trestle bridge. Once we were mov-ing again, an announcement was made that passengers needing to make connections in Vancouver that night should transfer to BC Rail’s regular passenger train at Lillooet that afternoon. Because we were behind schedule, our train would be held at Lillooet until after the regular train had departed so it would be ahead of us all the way in to North Van. If we took it, we would have no trouble making our onward connections. Did I heed this suggestion? NO! I’d paid my money to ride behind STEAM! Why should I transfer to a diesel rail car? Besides, I had the manager’s assurance that I could get to Vancouver with the caterer, didn’t I?

Richard and Marie and I watched the other train pull out on time. We then had to wait for a north-bound freight train to clear before we got going again. The tension started to build. Had I made the right decision? Finally, the engineer blew #3716’s whistle and we began to creep for-ward. As we rolled south through mountain canyons, along deep lakes and through dense, primeval forests, I wondered more and more if I’d be able to get to work in the morning. If not, what could I do? Phone in and explain I’d be in the next day? Maybe. About 20:00 hours (8:00 PM) we rolled to a gentle stop at Squamish. As the locomotives took on fuel oil

and water, the ca-tering crew arrived on board with our dinners. I spoke to the head caterer and asked if I could go in to Van-

couver with him as I’d been as-sured I could. He had heard noth-ing about this plan but fortunately, he had no objections to it. He ad-vised me to grab a box lunch and meet him in the cab of his truck. As soon as he finished transferring the meals to the train, we’d be on our way. Once we hit the road, I explained to him what I’d been told days ear-lier and apologized that he’d not been informed as I thought he had been. He willingly agreed to drop me off at an Airport Express Bus stop in downtown Vancouver so I could catch the Airport Express Bus to the airport.

LATE NIGHTS CONCLUSION...

We found a bus stop in front of a major hotel, I thanked him sincere-ly and bade him farewell. A few minutes later, I boarded a bus and arrived at the airport in time to hear the first call for my flight to Toronto.

I’d done it! While I hadn’t been able to ride behind double-headed steam all the way to North Van, I’d ridden as far as I could on the tour. Previously, I’d ridden from Squamish to North Van behind #3716, so in a way, I had ridden all the way behind steam.

My flight was scheduled into Toronto at 06:00 hours Wednesday

morning so I’d have time to get to work for 08:30. I’d be exhausted and glad to get home that night to get some sleep but I’d be at the of-fice on time, after all. It had been an adventuresome and sleepless weekend but worth every penny and every late night. If I could do it all again, would I? You bet! Wild horses wouldn’t keep me from it.

BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries, of course, besides being delicious, are very healthy.

Blueberries are one of the highest antioxidant foods in the world.

According to a Web site called Dr. Axe, blueberries do all of the following:

1. Combat aging

2. Boost the Brain

3. Fight Cancer

4. Support Digestion

5. Promote Heart Health

6. Benefit the Skin

7. Aid Weight Loss

What do you call blueberries playing the guitar? A jam session.

What do you call a sad strawberry? A blueberry.

What did one blueberry say to the other blueberry? If you weren't so sweet, we wouldn't be in this jam!

BERRY FUNNY...
