ISNT congratulates Mr.Sunil Suri & NDT team from L&T for completing the realisation of S200 Head End Segment (HES-06-LT) in the record time by setting a new benchmark & for completing the proof pressure testing (PPT) and delivering the segment as per VSSC requirement for Chandrayan-II mission. Their achievement was acknowledged by a letter of appreciation from ISRO.

On behalf of all ISNT members, veteran Shri P.G.Kulkarni bestowed Tolaniji with a commemorative plaque for his dedicated service to NDT & ISNT, educating & training generations of competent NDT professionals with utmost passion and zest. Everyone was delighted to be at the fun filled musical evening & relished the spread of scrumptious food. Tolani family thanked everyone for their presence with a pleasing gesture of gift.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Ultrasonic testing is widely used for detection and characterization of flaws in the components during manufacturing stage as well as while they are in service. Apart from flaw detection, ultrasonic testing is also useful for characterization of material properties. The fundamental basis behind this is the fact that the propagation of sound beam inside the material is significantly affected by changes in material’s microstructure and since the material’s microstructure affects properties of materials, these can be monitored or assessed by ultrasonic testing. There are two useful ultrasonic parameters, which are widely used for material characterization: sound velocity and sound attenuation. The speed of sound in a homogenous medium is directly related to the elastic modulus, poison’s ratio and density. Hence, any change in elastic properties due to microstructural changes, such as presence of micro-cracks, fissures, inclusions etc. affects the sound velocity in the material. Sound attenuation refers to the loss in the sound energy as it passes through the material. The two important mechanisms of sound attenuation are scattering and absorption. Since both these factors are affected by the material’s microstructure, ultrasonic techniques based on attenuation measurement are widely used for characterization of material properties such as grain size, inclusion rating, presence of micro-cracks etc. [1]. One of the major drawbacks in the application of the techniques based on sound velocity and attenuation measurement for characterization of material properties is that both these parameters require the knowledge of actual thickness of the component, where these measurements are being made. While this information is easily available at the manufacturing stage, during service life of the component, the actual thickness at the location where measurements are being made is difficult and sometimes impossible to determine. As a result, these parameters are seldom employed for material characterization during in-situ applications. A novel approach based on ultrasonic velocity ratio measurement overcomes this limitation. Ultrasonic velocity ratio refers to a parameter determined by taking the ratio of sound velocity in longitudinal and shear modes (or vice-versa). The velocity ratio is independent of the thickness and does not need the information on the thickness of the component, where measurements are made. As a result, this parameter is very useful for monitoring in-situ degradation in material properties, which the component may undergo while it is in service. This paper describes the methodology for determination of sound velocity ratio in materials and how this parameter can be effectively used for monitoring early degradation in components. A case study where velocity ratio has been used to assess the depth of intergranular corrosion (IGC) attack in stainless steel has been briefly described.

2.0 ULTRASONIC VELOCITY RATIO MEASUREMENT

The most convenient way to determine the ultrasonic velocity ratio at any given location in the component is by using normal beam transducer emitting longitudinal waves. When the normal beam transducer is kept on a sample, one would obtain a series of backwall echo signals at metal paths corresponding to the thickness and its multiples. The backwall echoes show a gradual decrease in the amplitude due to the sound attenuation. The time of flight difference between the two backwalls is a measure of sound velocity in the material. If the amplifier gain is increased, one can observe small amplitude signals between first and second backwall, second and third backwall and so on. A typical A-scan at higher amplifier gain when a normal beam probe is kept on a sample is shown in Figure 1. The first signal in the A-scan (on the left) is the initial pulse or the front surface signal. The second signal in the A-scan, denoted as FBE, is the first backwall echo. For this signal, the sound beam has travelled in the longitudinal mode during its forward path (front surface to back surface) and the return path (back surface to front surface). The last signal in the A-scan, denoted as SBE, is the second backwall echo. For this signal, the sound beam has travelled twice between the front surface and the backwall in the longitudinal mode. In between FBE and SBE signals, a small amplitude signal, denoted as SE, is seen. This signal is the mode converted backwall echo. For this signal, the sound beam has travelled in the longitudinal mode in the forward path. At the backwall, small fraction of sound beam undergoes mode conversion and returns to the front surface as shear wave. In effect, for the SE signal, the sound beam travels in longitudinal mode during the forward path and shear mode during the return path.

shear mode, x₁ is the metal path for FBE signal & x₂ is the metal path for SE signal.Any change in material microstructure (and so the property), changes the velocity of sound in longitudinal and shear modes. The magnitude (or sometimes the direction) of this change is different for these two modes. As a result, the velocity ratio changes when there is a change in the material property. This forms the basis for material characterization based on sound velocity ratio.

3.0 IN-SITU MONITORING OF INTERGRANULAR CORROSION (IGC) USING VELOCITY RATIO TECHNIQUE

Austenitic stainless steels are resistance to uniform corrosion due to presence of continuous chromium oxide layer but they are to prone localized corrosion attack. When the sensitized austenitic stainless steel is exposed to corrosive medium, they undergo localized corrosion attack called Intergranular Corrosion (IGC). The conventional ultrasonic testing based on sound beam reflection cannot identify the presence of IGC attack in the material. However, the technique based on measuring ultrasonic parameter such as ultrasonic velocity, velocity ratio and attenuation can be used for the detection and characterization of IGC in the austenitic stainless steels [2]. To establish the in-situ monitoring

technique based on ultrasonic velocity ratio measurement, samples with varying degrees of IGC attack were generated in the laboratory according to ASTM A262, Practice C. To simulate the actual plant condition, the corrosion attack on one side of the surface was removed by machining and the samples were subjected to ultrasonic velocity ratio measurement. The sound velocity in a medium is directly related to elastic modulus and density. The IGC attack produces numerous attacked regions at (sensitized) grain boundaries that are akin to micro-cracks in the sample, and this reduces the elastic modulus of the material in the attacked region. Figure 2 shows the variation in longitudinal to shear velocity ratio (V /V ) L T

with the depth of IGC attack. The ratio decreases with increasing depth of IGC attack. The decrease in ultrasonic velocity ratio indicates that longitudinal velocity is more affected by IGC attack than the shear velocity. Since the velocity ratio is independent of thickness, this approach can be used for the in-situ measurement of IGC attack in pipes and vessels. From

Figure 2, one can estimate the depth of IGC attack at an unknown location by determining the velocity ratio.

4.0 CONCLUSION

Ultrasonic velocity ratio is a very useful parameter for characterization of material properties. Since the time-of-flight of ultrasonic signals can be measured very accurately with the help of advanced instruments, ultrasonic velocity ratio can be determined with very high precision. As a result, one can monitor very small changes in material properties. Velocity ratio can thus serve as a very useful parameter during quality control at manufacturing stage (for example, qualifying the heat treatment) and for detection of damage in the material at an early stage during service.
