We tend to think of summer as being somehow “quieter,” but that is only with respect to the day school children. Things still go along full steam, otherwise. The Day School Rummage Sale takes up most of July, and it was by all indications another successful year. Now we have a few days to catch our collective breaths before we launch into another school year. W.E.E.D.S., our Wednesday evening offering, was on hiatus for June and July, but it gets started again soon. I want to encourage everyone to come and see what we do on Wednesday evenings. We have activities for all ages, and it is not limited to any particular demographic. We gather at 5:30 with the children attending choir practice and the others taking part in our group discussion. We break about 6:00 for supper, then resume the discussion while the children have their devotional/education time. This season will begin with a look at Church history with an eye toward how we got to where we are. I really enjoy all of our Christian education opportunities – Wednesday Bible study, W.E.E.D.S., Sunday School – there is no telling where the conversation will go, and that is awesome. We work very hard to make these a “safe space” where all questions and comments are welcomed and encouraged. I didn’t become an Episcopalian until I was thirty, and, like so many converts, I tend to be very enthusiastic about our church. The fact that I was a teacher before entering the ministry means that I love to talk about the church, her history, theology, teachings, and all the rest. So I want folks to come to our educational offerings and ask questions, dig deep into our shared experience. Christianity is more than just something we do on Sunday mornings. Our life in Christ is meant to be our defining characteristic. Episcopalians are fond of saying, “Everything in moderation,” but when it comes to our love of God, of God’s Church, and of God’s people, there is no moderation. IN OUR CHURCH

(continued from page 1) of our heart, all of our soul, all of our mind. And that is no easy task. But we have the Holy Spirit. And we have each other. We are the body of Christ. What we do, we do together. The call of God is not an easy one to answer alone, but then, God does not expect us to answer it alone.

Peace,

Fr. Brandt+

One Service Sundays There are several times during the year that we have one service only at 10:30 am. These are generally feast days and fifth Sundays as well as occasions when we all need to be together. The one service Sundays for the remainder of this year are: Sep 29 Fifth Sunday Nov 3 All Saints Sunday Nov 8 Annual Parish Meeting

Next Dates for Baptisms The Sacrament of Holy Baptism is appropriately administered within the Eucharist at the chief service on a Sunday. The next date for baptism at St. James is Nov 3, All Saints’ Sunday. To schedule a baptism, please call Betsy at the Church Office or speak to Father Brandt.

The Blessing of the Backpacks will be August 4 during the 10:30 am service. Any and all students are welcome to bring their backpacks for a blessing to start the school year off right.

Betsy will be on vacation from Sept. 11 through Sept. 26. Since she will not be in the office, the next Wayfarer will be a double issue for September and October. Please have any articles or information you would like in the double issue to her by August 26.

Our stained glass windows are back! These were the last windows that needed to be removed for restoration. There are a few left to clean and cover and all our windows will be restored. Take a moment to look around next time you are in the church. Pearl River has done a wonderful job and we have some really beautiful windows here at St. James.

IN OUR COMMUNI

On August 11 we will have a guest priest for 8:00 and 10:30 church. Please come to hear the Rev. Bruce Torrey speak about a ministry providing direct relief to the poor throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Father Torrey will share personal witness about Food for the Poor’s mission to care for the destitute as a means of living out the Gospel mandate to love one another.

Father Torrey was ordained in 1981 for the Diocese of Connecticut. Prior to preaching on behalf of Food for the Poor, Father Bruce served as Rector for many parishes, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.

IN OUR CHURCH

BACK TO SCHOOL!!!! The Day School will kick off a new school year on Monday, August 26 with 74 students. Many new families are joining our program as well as a few new staff members including Emily Pieralisi as a pre-k teacher and Ruby Edwards as kindergarten assistant. The Day School Board also welcomes Liz Weissinger as a new director.

The 9th Annual Giant Rummage Sale was another HUGE success – and all because of the collective effort of so many volunteers of parents, staff and parishioners! This year the sale netted $11,286.00. Thanks again to everyone who helped either sorting, pricing, collecting, cooking and, of course, shopping. It truly is a great cause and actually a lot of fun.

We have already begun accepting donations of your “no longer needed” items for next year’s sale. The storage container is empty and ready to be filled with more treasures! When you are ready, just bring them to the church.

Remember to take your clothing to the Corner Closet Resale Shop and put the items under the Day School account.
