We all experience loss. Whether it
is the passing of an immediate family
member, a distant relative, or a
friend, each of us encounters death.
Tradition teaches that death is as
much a part of life as birth. Just as a
naming or a bris marks a new life,
customs and rituals guide us through
mourning and rememberance.
Most of us are familiar with the
sacred obligation to recite the
Mourner’s Kaddish for an immediate
family member on their yahrzeit,
marking the anniversary of their
death. Some may also know we are
instructed to remember our loved
ones at appointed times throughout
the year on pilgrimage festivals, and
on Yom Kippur in a service known as
Yizkor. But there is one more time,
and it is coming up as we prepare for
the High Holidays. The month just
prior to Rosh Hashanah is the month
of Elul, which is thought to be an
auspicious time. We are taught that
God is closer to us at Elul than any
other month of the year. One of our
From the Rabbi/News
longstanding traditions of
remembrance is to visit the graves of
loved ones during Elul.
The High Holidays are a
contemplative period, prompting us
to think about who we are and what
our actions say about our values.
Our self-reflection during this time is
intended to lead us to make changes
in our behavior and ask forgiveness
for what we have done wrong.
Visiting the graves of loved ones is
part of this process, as it helps us to
remember the ideals they taught us
to live by. As we place stones on
the markers of those we love, we
remember their legacies and feel
inspired to live our lives more fully.
Each year we hold a short Kever
Avot memorial service at the
cemetery between Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur. For those who are
ambulatory, it is a wonderful
opportunity to pay a loving tribute.
For those who are not as agile, it is
quite difficult to make the trek. This
is one of many reasons I am trying
Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz Senior Rabbi
something new this year. We will
have a congregational Kever Avot
program on Sunday, September 8,
at 10:30 a.m. instead of our regular
service during the days of awe.
This special Kever Avot program is
intended to provide the opportunity
for the less mobile among us to visit
the gravesites of their loved ones. In
particular, this program serves the
residents of assisted living facilities
and apartments. On the morning of
September 8, Temple volunteers
will accompany older adults on a
one-to-one basis for the morning as
they visit their loved ones’ graves.
This intergenerational program will
help build connections within our
congregational community, and offer
our older generations the chance to
share the stories and lessons that
were passed down to them by their
loved ones.
In order for this to be successful, we
will need volunteers! We will be
looking for individuals to accompany
older adults on a one-to-one basis
for the morning and others to help
coordinate and organize seniors at
various facilities. If you are willing to
help with this mitzvah of a lifetime,
please contact the office to let me
know. More specific information and
volunteer opportunities will be given
in the September Tablet.
Grand Opening of Common Grounds Café at TI
Opening this August is our new Common Grounds Café at TI. Comfy chairs and hot beverages, free wi-fi, and a cozy
nook...there is no place better to stop when you’re in the neighborhood or in between meetings. We’ll celebrate our
grand opening on Sunday, August 25, at 10:00 a.m. with a delicious cookie swap! Each person participating should
bring five dozen homemade cookies (all the same kind) to share. We will sample the treats, trade cookies, and
exchange recipes. To ensure a wide variety of cookies, please RSVP to the office and let us know what type of
cookie you plan to make. Be sure to bring along copies of your recipes. We will provide the coffee!
Thank you, Teresa Wyman, for decorating this new space and encouraging us to build stronger connections with each
other.
Thanks!
I want to extend my thanks for the generosity that the Temple Israel community has shown to me after the
devastating damage incurred to my home during the Memorial Day tornados. Your support has been a real blessing.

We will read through Barry W.
Holtz's book, Back to the Sources,
which teaches about basic genres of
Jewish literature including: Hebrew
Bible, Talmud, Midrash,
commentaries, philosophy, Kabbalah,
Hasidic literature, and liturgy. Class
will be held at Temple Israel on
Thursdays at noon beginning
August 15. Feel free to bring a
lunch and a copy of the book.

American summer foods including, all
beef hot dogs, barbecued chicken,
and a collection of traditional salads.
A vegetarian option will be available.
This year’s food themes are:

School Backpacks
On Thursday, August 8 we plan to
partner with Crayons to Classrooms
to prepare
backpacks for
students in

children lost
everything during
the Memorial Day
tornados. We’ll
pack the
backpacks with all
the supplies the
kids will need for
the school year.
At the time of publication we are still
awaiting final confirmation. Look for
details in upcoming TIDBits.

topics relevant to
modern Jewish
living. You've got the questions,

Religious School Registration
Regular registration is due by August 8 for the 2019-20 academic year. Our comprehensive curriculum includes a
progressive academic program as well as Jewish dance, music, art, and literature. All students participate in worship
service during Religious School sessions. Formal Hebrew instruction begins in grade 3. All congregants with school-
age children should have received their registration packets, if not contact us at 496-0050.

The halls are mopped, the boards are
washed, but it’s still quiet in our
religious school wing! I can’t wait to
welcome back all of our students on
Sunday, August 18 as we kick off
the 2019-2020 year. This year will
bring just as much excitement as past
years, with our High Holiday family
services, evening sessions for Sukkot
and Simchat Torah, the Chanukkah
Happening and Mock Seder, and
more. On February 9 we’ll join for
an experiential family program
focusing on Tu Bishvat-the birthday
of the trees.
An overarching theme of mindfulness
will permeate our study of middot
(Jewish values and ethics) throughout
the year. We’ll begin with Kehilah/
Community, T’sumat Lev/
Attentiveness, Simchah/Joy, Ometz Lev/
Courage, Bal Tashchit/
Environmentalism, Derekh Eretz/Good
Manners, and Kavod/Honor. Be sure
to ask our students about these values
throughout the year and model them
at home and in the community.
Our year of youth programming
would not be complete without
keeping our littlest ones in mind. Our
Prayer & Play group celebrated one
full year of Shabbat play dates this
summer and is going strong into the
school year. If you have children or
grandchildren age 6 and under, or
know someone who does, make sure
they are in the know and saving the
dates for our upcoming events. I
know three happy preschoolers that
are excited to see their friends on
their first day of religious school this
year, after praying and playing
together over the last year.
I look forward to keeping you all up
to date on this year’s adventures
with our youth!
Prayer & Play
All Prayer & Play events are facilitated by Rabbi Sobo
and are perfect for not-yet-school-aged children, age 6
and under and their families. The goal is to build
community in a come-as-you-are, friendly environment.
All events include a little prayer, a lot of fun and
laughter, and a wonderful community. RSVPs for all
events are strongly encouraged, but not required, to the
office or Rabbi Sobo.

Schmooze And Nosh
May and June have been busy months, but we have been very fortunate to
have had several families who have sponsored our Friday evening Schmooze
and Nosh pre-negs. Thank you to:
The Blumer Family, Adriane Miller (two months in a row!), The Israel
Trip Alumni Group, Carol Graff, Bunny Laderman, Linda Novak, and
Amy Margolin.
If you would like to remember a loved one or honor a person or special
event, a great way to do it is by sponsoring a Friday evening Schmooze and
Nosh pre-neg. To schedule a date call Linda Novak (836-2458) or call Ellen
in the Temple office (496-0050). You will have the option of supplying the
goodies or sending a check to cover the cost and we will do the shopping and
set up for you. Either way you will be acknowledged as the sponsor of the
event.
Do You Get TIDBits? Temple’s weekly e-mail has all the latest information about worship and
events and offers easy links to RSVP. To sign up for TIDBits, visit Temple’s

Thank You Festival Volunteers!
The ninth Annual Jewish Cultural Festival is history. The grounds are clear,
the cookies eaten, and the staff can finally breathe easily. However, the job is
not done until the many volunteers (members and non-members alike) are
thanked publicly.
Approximately 150 people volunteered to help
make this year's festival a success. These
wonderful people are the lifeblood of the festival.
Without their tireless efforts planning the event,
baking, putting up fencing, selling raffle tickets,
greeting our guests, and manning booths the
festival just plain would not happen. So thank
you, thank you, thank you for responding to the
call to help; and hopefully for next year's big
tenth year you will remember the fun you had and volunteer again.
Big Tent Appreciation Event
Join us on Friday, August 2 for a special service and dinner catered by
Bernstein’s Catering. We’ll be
celebrating all of the hard work and
effort put forth by our volunteers who
helped make the Jewish Cultural
Festival a success. We’ll enjoy dinner
outside under a tent. Dinner is free
but you must RSVP by July 28.
