CHURCH PROPERTY I would like to thank the youth of the church for their fund raising for new pool table accessories. With the funds raised we purchased: pool cues, chalk, pool rack, table cover, pool balls, and other items that can be used for other pool games. Bob Bell has completed painting the front of the church. This is an item that few will see but it was truly needed. Also, Bob has committed to com-pleting the exterior of the new sanctuary. Thanks to Bob for his dedication and commitment to our church property. Mowing continues, work in our gardens is ongoing, carpeting was cleaned in Fellowship Hall, and we continue to address needs of the church property. Thank you to all who assist in keeping our church and gardens fresh and clean. A new window was installed in the basement at the bottom of the stairs in the East entry to the basement. This completes the remodeling of the basement. We encourage all groups to make use of this new and updated facility. A big thank you to Dave Puccio and his staff for the excellent job they did in the renovation of our basement. I am researching to see if updating our technolo-gy is needed. With the addition to the basement and the needs of our office staff, it may be time to address the technology demands of our church.
TO ALL BOARD CHAIRS: Please submit your 2020 Budget requests to me no later than August 26, 2019. This budget must be submitted to the Board at the September meeting for review and will be voted on at the December meeting. The July financials you should have received show your current budget and your current expenditures. If you have any questions or concerns about the process or your budget in general, please feel free to contact me. Thank you, Jo Ellen Lathwell Financial Trustee

SHEPHERD MINISTRY One of Blaine’s many blessings is their Shepherd Ministry Committee. Their purpose is to visit the “Home bound” and share communion with them. It has expanded to visiting and calling them, so they feel loved and cared for. The Shepherd Ministry will work with the Elders to help each other in congregational care. If you would like to help the Shepherd Ministries in any way, please call Mary Lou Noble at 352-7035.
Are you interested in making a difference in the life of an elemen-tary student this year at Betsie Valley School? Kids Hope USA is the program for you. You will have the opportunity to spend an hour a week with a student helping them with
schoolwork and being their special friend. If this sounds like a ministry for you-talk with Carolyn Waterson for more information and training time. There will be a training session for new mentors in early fall and a meeting for returning mentors. Make sure you pick up a Clearance Registry form and fill it out if you are a current mentor or plan to be a mentor. They are on the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall.

Prayer shawls are shawls knitted with love and prayers; either for a particular person or for someone the knitter will never meet. The prayer shawl is meant to wrap the person in need with the love and prayers to help heal and comfort them. The prayer shawls are not distributed by any one person. If you know of a need please ask Stonna Spading (chair) 231-378-4864, or Bonnie Putney (staff for Congregational Care) 231-499-6788. *Our inventory of shawls is quite low; if you have one to donate or to finish, we would appreciate it.
SPECIAL MUSIC During the summer months, our choir takes a break and there is special music in place of the anthem in the 10am service. Thank you to the following folks who shared their gift
of music with us in July to glorify God--Lynette Willams, Judy Ingleston and Julie Zych, Kari MacDonald, and Carolyn Bell.
The church is in need of volunteers for the following areas: worship leader, worship reader, children’s sermons, Kids
Kare, greeters, ushers, and fellowship hosts. Please sign up on the appropriate volunteer list on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall to serve in one of these areas for the summer months.
SUMMER KIDS KARE During the summer months there is not regular Sunday School-but a more structured Kid’s Kare program for our little one’s ages 3-7yrs follow-ing the children’s message in the 10am service. This time includes a story, an activity and vvsinging all under the leadership of an adult or senior high age youth. There is also infant care for our wee ones during this service and children are ALWAYS welcomed to stay in the worship services and use a worship packet from the table at the entrance to the sanctuary. There is also a glassed-in cry room with audio at the back of the sanctuary for families that like that option. Remember Jesus said: “Let the children come...”
CLEARANCE REGISTRY
It is that time of year when you are asked to renew your clearance registry information for the next year. The church asks any adult who works with children and youth to have this clearance done each year. This is a way we help assure parents of the safety of their children when they are a part of a ministry at Blaine. Beginning in mid- July there will be paperwork available at church to fill out for this clearance. So if you are a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, Kid’s Kare helper, nursery person or do occasional childcare for church events, or transport children, or are a Kids Hope mentor, please plan to participate in the clearance registry this year. Thanks for your help with this important part of being a caring church.
If you'd like to attend a two - day WinSome Women Retreat at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island this coming October, on-line registration begins Saturday, August 10th. Cathy Bodell is willing to help with individual or group registra-tion, 231/871-1553, [email protected]. The website, https://wswretreats.org/events/422/fall-wsw-retreat, gives program and cost infor-mation. Also, flyers with program details are on one of the tables in the Fellowship Hall.

Psalm 127:3 “Children are a heritage from the Lord”. One thing that goes on forever is our prayers for our future generations. That is one action I am sure of… the past prayers that my Grandmothers
prayed for me are in a bowl in heaven…as all my prayers are collected there as well. The prayers we pray today will continue for our children and grandchildren long after we are gone.

Blaine Christian Church is again planning a mission trip to Key West Florida to work with Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Keys. The trip will take place February 1-8, 2020. The group will be staying at the Key West Methodist Church. We are not sure the specific projects at this time. We will be working on hurricane relief or other projects that Habitat has for us. Cost will be approximately $700.00 per person plus meals for traveling and evening meals while on the trip. The team will be eating breakfast at the church, lunch on the job site and will be going out and enjoying some of the Key West cuisine for dinner. The sign up sheet is on the bulletin board in the back of church. A deposit of $350 will be required to the church office by September 1 for those signed up, with the remaining balance due by January 5. If you are not able to go, the mission team would ask that you remember them in your prayers as plans come together and as the team travels and volunteers with Habitat this winter. If you have any questions, please contact Wayne Faber. Housing is limited so don't wait to sign up.

An 11th year project of Franklin Graham’s Samaritan Purse humanitarian relief organization: OCC is a fun mission project that is full of
gift shopping, love, craft sewing and packing a bright red and green Christmas box for a boy or girl. The box may go to a child that never received a gift of any kind. The Christmas boxes go all over the world to children who need the health care items, toys, and much needed school supplies that are packed inside – even to the USA.
One little boy received a shoe box full of socks and was so happy as his legs and feet were full of sores-the socks would help him heal!
There are several ways to pack an OCC box and after we complete a great week of Vacation Bible School we’ll start our OCC crafts and provide shopping lists for you.
One August suggestion: School supplies! PENCILS, ERASERS, PENCIL SHARPENERS, RULERS, CRAYONS AND MARKERS! Buy them on sale now to pack in your OCC box or donate some supplies to the boxes the church will pack.
We will begin to take clean, t-shirts; they may have frayed necklines, small holes or logos on them. We will make jump ropes to put in the OCC boxes.
OCC team: Dale Janusch, Becca Tanner, Cathy Bodell, Jan Heverly, Bonnie Putney-join us!
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL - Thank you to everyone who has volunteered and provided
needed supplies!
Volunteers - We can always use some extra hand. Please call Shannon Gillison or Carolyn Waterson if are able to help, especially if you are willing to help with rides for kids. Supplies - Due at the church. The items you are lending can go home with you after worship on August 11th. Mission Offering - We are collecting no-perishable food items for Benzie Area Christian Neighbors Food Pantry. Children are asked to bring a can or 2 of food each evening. The church family can participate by bringing items on Sunday, August 11th. Cash donations are also accepted.
EVER HEARD ABOUT . . . “The Law Of 3 Hearings
And 7 Touches”? Research shows the average
guest that comes to church usually needs 3 - 4 visits and 7 meaningful touches before accepting Christ or joining a church. The Membership/Evangelism Ministry is planning a very special “FRIEND DAY” at our church on Sunday, September 22, 2019. This day will be an opportunity for everyone in our church family to invite an unchurched friend to come with them to Sunday School and to worship with us. They will hear and see from us how Jesus can be their Best Friend. “FRIEND DAY” is Biblical. In John 1:29 - 51, John The Baptist pointed Andrew and John to Jesus, then they each invited someone close to them (Andrew brought Simon, his brother; John brought his brother, James) to come see Jesus for himself. In the same chapter, Philip became a follower of Jesus, and then invited his friend, Nathaniel, to come see if Jesus was the promised Messiah. Each time, the believer built on an existing relationship (kinship or friendship) to introduce another person to Christ. “FRIEND DAY” can help us live out John 15:12 - 14 which says: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.” Begin now to pray and ask God to lay on your heart the names of those He wants you to invite. Then look for opportunities to invite them. Mark this date on your calendar and plan to bring someone to church who needs Jesus.
CHOIR BEGINS Mid-August will bring the beginning of choir rehearsals in preparation for the fall season of music for the 11am worship service. If you enjoy singing and would
like to help lead worship through this music ministry, then plan to join the choir this year. Rehearsals will begin on Sunday, August 18th (time TBA) at the church. The first Sunday to sing in worship will be September 8th when we return to the fall schedule of worship at 8:30 and 11am with Sunday School at 9:45. This is a wonderful way to spend an hour on Sunday evening praising God and enjoying good fellowship. If you have questions, talk with Carolyn Waterson.
LOOKING AHEAD TO FALL
Planning is starting for fall studies and minis-tries. If you have an idea for a study or ministry that you think our church should offer, please make that idea known to a staff person or committee chair. It is great when we can offer new programs that help people grow in their understanding of God and what His word has to say about living like Jesus and serving others. Fall Bible studies: Details in the next newsletter- to begin the 2nd week of September. Sunday School for ages 2 years-adult will begin again on September 8th at 9:45am. We need volunteers to help teach classes. If this is an area you would be willing to serve in talk with Shannon Gillison, or Carolyn Waterson.
Women are encouraged to mark November 16th on their calendars for a retreat day with speaker Lee Neinhuis. Lee came last fall and those that attended went away refreshed and encouraged and saying “invite her back” so we did! Lee has been engaging people through the Word for close to two decades. People often describe her as passionate, engaging and sincere, but it is her firm belief that God’s word still transforms lives that is most contagious. More information to follow in future newsletters...but save the date now for a great growing time.
FALL WOMEN’S RETREAT - NOVEMBER 16th
Blaine Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 7018 Putney Road Arcadia, MI 49613
Our Mission
Our purpose at the Blaine Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is to live and share the love of God as revealed in Jesus Christ through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Together, we seek to learn, teach, hear, minister, support, grow and worship as a community of faith. As Christ’s disciples, we accept the call to reach out with God’s love to those outside the church. Thus, as part of the Church Universal, we intend to serve both the physical and spiritual needs of our immediate community and the world. To this end we commit ourselves to witness and serve in the fellowship and traditions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
