Mental Health Awareness

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

1 p.m.

Mental Illness is more prevalent

than most think. It has been

reported that one in five

Americans experience some form

of mental illness in their lifetime.

Mental illnesses are as real as

other physical illnesses and they

can be treated. By acting early

and effectively many of the mental illnesses can be

prevented from progressing or even occurring in the

first place. Education and awareness are essential parts

of eliminating the mental health stigma. Mental Illness

does not discriminate. It effects all ages, races, cultures

and genders. Come learn more about breaking down

the stigma and be a part of open discussions on mental

health issues in your community.

BOOK IT!

Before We Were Yours by Lisa

Wingate (2017) -The story begins in

Memphis in 1939, when a mother

and father must rush to the hospital

one night, and leave their daughter,

Rill Foss, and her four siblings home

alone. Strangers come and take the

children away, but assure the

children they will be reunited with

their parents. However, the children

find themselves in an orphanage. The

story picks up, present day, in South

Carolina with the story of Avery

Steed, who was born into a wealthy

family. When Avery begins to

question her family history, she finds

out a secret which may change her life forever. Based off the

Georgia Tann’s Children’s Home Society scandal, in which

poor children were taken and sold to rich families in

Tennessee.

Forty Minutes to Glory: Inside the Kentucky Wildcats’

1978 Championship Season by Doug Brunk (2017) Taking the reader behind-the-scenes, this book goes through

interviews with each surviving member of the 1978

Kentucky Wildcat basketball team. The book goes through

the beginning of the season, all the way until the 1978

National Championship game where the Wildcats won 94-88

over the Duke Blue Devils.

Kids as Caregivers

More than 1.3 to 1.4 million youth ages 8-19 provide care for sick or disabled family members. Caregiving can be both

emotionally and physically draining for people of any age, but especially for developing children and teens who are often

serving as primary caregivers with little support and supervision. These kids are providing hands-on physical care such

as toileting, bathing, dressing and eating. They are managing household tasks and even talking to physician and adminis-

tering medications. But in addition, these youth are also balancing school, a social life and the stresses associated with

being a kid. It is therefore important for families to evaluate whether or not they are asking kids to do something that is

too emotional or physically stressful that is preventing them from being able to be a child. This is not to say that kids

should not be involved in caregiving, but perhaps we should not be asking them to do things that are age appropriate and

as a part of a caregiving team.
