The Herald August 2018

AT PEACE WITH GOD Without God in your life,

demons of self-doubt can

control you and undermine

your best efforts. Anxiety

can eat at you and leave

you an easy prey for

despair and defeat. Fear

and trembling accompany

you wherever you go.

Trying to live without God is unimaginably self-defeating.

Despite all the intelligence and cunning that God has gifted

you with, if you do not rest in God and place your hope in Him,

you won’t succeed at anything you do. Failure is impossible

with God.

Psalm 23 is the psalm of the Great Shepherd who cares for His

sheep and equips them for ministry (Heb. 13:20-21), the “great

High Priest” (Heb. 4:14) who “ever lives to make intercession

for us” (Heb. 7:25). In verses 1–3 of Psalm 23 is a picture of us

in the Lord’s pasture. “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not

want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me

beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths

of righteousness for his name’s sake.” Certainly this psalm has

a message for the sorrowing, but it’s unfortunate that it’s used

primarily at funerals because it also focuses on what Jesus does

for us “all the days of (our) life” and not just at death.

“The Lord” is Jehovah God, the covenant-making God

of Israel. The compound names of Jehovah in the

Old Testament reflect the contents of this psalm. “I shall not

want” Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord will provide” (Gen. 22:14);

“still waters” Jehovah-Shalom, “the Lord our peace

(Judg. 6:24); “restores my soul” Jehovah-Rophe, “the Lord

who heals” (Ex. 15:26).

Our Lord called believers “my sheep” because He died for

them (1 Peter 1:18-19) and because the Father gave them to

Him (John 17:12). The emphasis in verses 1–3 is that Jesus

is adequate for every need the sheep (you and I) may have

as they are in the pasture.

The things that perplex and disturb us today will be clear

when we get to heaven. We will look back and see “only

goodness and mercy.” Under the old covenant, the sheep died

for the shepherd; under the new covenant, the Shepherd died

for the sheep; we shall meet our Shepherd in heaven!

“For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their

shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And

God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Rev. 7:17).

Good News Club

The Lord called and FBC answered, “Speak, for your

has answered our prayers and is sending us outside the walls

of the church into the community. I want to thank everyone

for prayers concerning this opportunity and those who have

volunteered their time to serve the Lord in His will.

Thank you Jesus for this privilege! God bless all of you,

BOARD OF TRUSTEES UPDATE We are experiencing air conditioning problems at the church.

The north air handler has been repaired and the unit’s Freon

brought up to specification. However, the south air conditioner

has a leak in its coil. The trustees have asked for pricing on the

repair of the coil or a new coil from Reeds. We plan to use just

the north AC unit until we receive pricing so that we can make

an informed decision on repair of the south unit. Thanks to

Willy for painting the east downstairs men’s room. He is

planning to start on the east ladies' room next.

AUGUST BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES

August Offering

Cereal

Bill Carter has served as our Music Director since Fall 2016.

During that time, he organized a new Praise Team and spent

numerous hours planning the music portion of our Sunday

worship service. He also provided musical leadership at

events such as the Lenten Lunch and Church Picnic.

As he moves on to other ministry opportunities, we wish him

well and thank him for his service to First Baptist Church.

BROWN BAG MINISTRY TO RESUME The new school year starts this month

and that means it is time to resume our

Brown Bag ministry. As many of you

know, this ministry provides non-perishable

food items to local children who may not have

enough to eat at home over the weekend.

During the last school year, more than 100 bags

were distributed each week to Benton Elementary students.

Your continued financial support of this ministry is greatly

appreciated. And if you’d like to help pack the bags on

Friday mornings, talk with Gerald Owens.
